The school’s popular Volleyball Tournament drew in 21 sixthgrade teams and 20 seventh and eighth-grade teams, raising funds to benefit members of the Harborfields community.

What’s The Plan? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am a person who thrives on plans, on knowing precisely what the schedule entails, time frames, routes, weather forecasts, the whole bit. So when these plans, inevitably, fall apart at the seams, it’s more than a bit frustrating. I mention this point because, in the span of the last 24 hours, I have had about seven potential “happenings” fall through, some even before they had the opportunity to be properly formulated. I know, I know, get over it, be
spontaneous, blah blah… well, for some, this is easier said than done. Especially when the roadblocks are created through no fault of your own. From dinners with friends, to summer concert presales, to advance ticket reservations to outdoor adventures… all cancelled, on account of everything from Mother Nature, to high demand, to illness, to, well, just plain hesitancy to commit to anything so far in advance. Such a turn of events can go one of two ways – it can motivate you to forge ahead, solo, or (especially in the cold of winter)
to instead curl up and resolve to hibernate until Spring. Normally, this second option would be just fine with me; but after repeated, futile attempts to coordinate in such a short span of time… well, it’s just disappointing. A joke. A candid camera-type collection of mishaps. They say you should make the most of each day, but sometimes, it just seems that life is conspiring against this principle. I tried. I failed. I suppose I could give it another try tomorrow. Or not… how many days ‘til Spring?

With personal knowledge of the topic, students utilized the school’s library and computer lab to acquire addition information and photos. Students chose topics on a variety of interests, ranging from gymnastics and soccer to sharks and panda bears. During the publishing

experimentation, Krief’s science project, “Regeneration Of Planaria Exposed To Antioxidants And Fish Oil,” allowed her to analyze how planaria, a non-parasitic flatworm, regenerates after being cut in half and placed
in a variety of different solutions. “Maybe one day this type of research can lead to the regeneration of limbs to help people with birth deficiencies and who served in the military,” said Krief.

Boy Of Many Words Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District is proud to announce that fifth-grade student Jack Steel won first place in the school’s annual Spelling Bee. More than 35 elementary
students participated in the spelling bee, all competing for the first place title and chance to represent their school at the regional competition. Down to the final two competitors, Steel claimed the first place title, while fourth-
grade student Caleb Kapen received runner-up. Steel will move on to represent his school in the Scripps National Spelling Program Regional Contest at Hofstra University on Sunday, February 8th.

District Dedication On January 10th, the Northport-East Northport School District held a special dedication ceremony for its Robert W. Krueger Center for the Performing Arts at Northport High School. To celebrate the dedication of the renovated auditorium space, approximately 600 high school students and community musicians held a concert for the school community, highlighting the tremendous student talent within the district. The event kicked off with a performance by the Northport High School Tour Choir and the Northport Choral, followed by a lyrical dance composition by the Northport High School Dance Ensemble. The Northport High School Orchestra and the Northport Symphony Orchestra then took the stage to perform a variety of musical numbers. The Northport High School Symphonic Winds and the Northport Community Band united for two pieces, also featuring the Northport High School Choir and the Northport Chorale. To conclude the event, the Northport High School Tiger Marching Band played “Push On,” the fight song brought to Northport by Krueger from Northwestern University in 1957.
A variety of school and community officials attended the event, showcasing the tremendous impact that Krueger had on the Northport community. New York State Senator John Flanagan, whose children are active in the music program, shared fond memories of Krueger’s enthusiasm for the music program in the district. New
life-long learning, and pride in community continue to resonate in Northport-East Northport,” Current Director of Music Education Dr. Izzet Mergen said, “We are standing on the shoulders of educational giants in music education.” Robert W. Krueger, hired by the district as director of music education in 1957, spent 27 years with Northport-East Northport. He is credited with developing a comprehensive music education program of the highest caliber within the district and establishing the Northport Community Band, a group of 17 students and 3 adults within the community. Under his guidance, the Northport High School Marching band played at more NY Jets half-time shows than any other high school in the New York metropolitan area, played at the opening game of the World Series in 1981 and was the official band of New York State at the 1965 World’s Fair. Krueger is the only person to be elected to the Presidency York State Regent Roger Tilles, also present, remembered of both the Nassau and Suffolk County Music Educators Krueger’s dedication to the students of Northport-East Associations (NMEA and SCMEA). Paying Tribute Students at the James H. Boyd Intermediate School took part in an assembly on Friday, January 16th, to pay tribute to the life and dedication of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Led by Masters of Ceremony Alexandra Haddad and Joshua Haddad, the president and vice president of the student council, the event kicked off with a video tribute to Dr. King. Students from Mrs. McLeod’s class then presented biographical
information about Dr. King, followed by excerpts from the “Martin Luther King Jr.” poem from students in Mr. Pace and Mrs. Reilly’s classes. Mrs. McLeod’s students concluded the reading portion by sharing King’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech. The event continued with a school sing-a-long of “Martin Luther King,” followed by a performance of “We Shall Overcome” by the third, fourth and
fifth-grade chorus. Then, Mrs. Jessica Gates, a thirdgrade teacher, spoke to the students about Dr. King’s vision and character. “Dr. King had a dream and worked hard to make it a reality,” Gates said. “He is an inspiration to us all.” Principal Denise Toscano concluded the assembly by talking to the students and about accepting people for who they are, regardless of their differences.
Contest Winners After participating in the American Mathematics Competitions 8, six Oldfield Middle School students were awarded for their outstanding academic performance in the contest. Taking place back in November, 27 zealous middle school students chose to participate in the contest. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice
examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problemsolving skills. A special purpose of the AMC 8 is to foster the development of positive attitudes and perceptions of students as learners of mathematics. In addition, participation in the AMC 8 contest can lead to more selective competitions

Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 4 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have

SILVER AWARD HONOREES - Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recently attended the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Silver Award Ceremony at the John Glenn High School in Elwood. To earn the Silver Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve, a girl must complete a Cadette Journey and fifty hours of service dedicated to creating a sustainable project that will improve a community. Cadette Aislin Peet of East Northport received her Silver Award pin for building houses for pigs at Janice Skura’s Pig Sanctuary so they can live in a protective environment during the winter and she also constructed a fence around part of the sanctuary. Also an animal lover and a resident of East Northport, Cadette Kaitlyn Cunningham earned her Silver Award pin for designing and building cat hammocks for the outdoor enclosure at the Huntington Animal Shelter where they can play and rest in a safe setting.
