The ninth annual Sunshine Toy Drive was a huge success this year, due to the many generous contributions and dedicated work by volunteers. The Holiday Toy Drive for the needy was the idea of 17 year-old Victoria Plumitallo of Dix Hills, who began the drive nine years ago with the assistance of her parents, Dix Hills Fire Commissioner Mike

Plumitallo and his wife Hope. Derived from her nickname “Sunshine,” Victoria’s idea to help the less fortunate grew into the “Sunshine Toy Drive” hosted by the Dix Hills Fire Department. Assisted by friends, family, firefighters and many volunteers, the fund raising effort was a huge success. Well over 1,000 children were assisted by the drive with

holiday gifts this season. During a field trip to the iconic MetLife Stadium, members of the Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) Club at Harborfields High School attended the New York Jets Sports Business Day. During the event,

students participated in a walking tour and visited different stations set up around the arena to take part in question and answer sessions. While on the tour, students viewed the locker room, company suites, the stadium and even saw the new uniforms

the team will wear for the upcoming game. At the culmination of the tour, students spent time outside exploring the field. Students that attended the trip were invited back to the stadium to attend a New York Jets game in the future.

The Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths & Adults (HKNC) jump-started its annual Helen’s Run/Walk this week with a kick-off breakfast at its Sands Point headquarters. Dozens and dozens of community residents and participants from previous years gathered to brainstorm and collect registration materials

for this year’s Helen’s Run/Walk, which will take place on Sunday, April 17th, at the Sands Point Preserve. Words of inspiration were provided by HKNC Assistant Program Coordinator Maricar Marquez, followed by insights on getting healthy and motivated from nutritional health counselor and Sands Point resident Sara Siskind.

This year, under the advisement of Alison Matthews, the Harborfields DECA Club excelled in various categories with 13 winners and sevent honorable mentions. Spell-endid Performance Max Stratton, a fifthgrade student at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District, was named the champion of the school’s second annual spelling bee. In the beginning of the school year, each fourthand fifth-grade class individually held a spelling bee contest. The winners and runner-ups from each

class were then qualified to be contestants in the fourth- and fifth-grade school-wide spelling bee held on January 8th. During the spelling competition, fellow peers in the audience raised their hands in the air and wiggled their fingers to silently applaud contestants after each word he or she spelled correctly. Down to the final two competitors, Stratton

claimed the first place title after correctly spelling the word ‘mawkish’, while fifth-grade student Kamden Johansen received runner-up. Stratton will move on to represent his school in the Scripps National Spelling Program Regional Contest at Hofstra University on March 13th.

As part to of the thirdgrade social studies curriculum, students at James H. Boyd Intermediate School in the Elwood Union Free School District are learning about the rights and responsibilities of being a citizen in the United States. To help further explain the concept of citizenship, Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern visited students and led a group discussion on

the topic. Prior to the presentation, third-graders discussed what it means to be a citizen, learned about the three branches of government and people of authority in the government that help create laws. During the session, Legislator Stern explained the types of responsibilities citizens have, the importance of voting and ways to be a good citizen at a young age

To conclude, students participated in a question and answer session with Legislator Stern. In the middle of the game, the score is 28 to 30. Our team is losing by three points. When the game starts, our team gets the ball first. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in. You could see the bright orange color of the ball. It went in and made a swooshing noise. The whole crowd cheered. Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

Muscle FLEX In an effort to help encourage students to make healthy choices, Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District hosted an interactive exercise program called “LET’S FLEX.” During the presentation,

students followed along as lead exercise instructor Freddie Flex and his workout team demonstrated ways to be fit and flexible while moving to the beat of the music. Prior to each work out, students were selected from the audience to read

the name of the exercise. By the end of the session, students exercised to a total of 11 different songs. As they exited the program, Freddie Flex congratulated each student with a high-five.

King for a Day

Celebrating the life and accomplishments of civil rights hero Martin Luther King, Jr., Elwood’s James H. Boyd Intermediate School held a special MLK assembly on January 15th in the school auditorium, full of stirring speeches and song. Boyd Student Council President Ava Mule and Vice President Sean O’Grady presided over a multifaceted ceremony, beginning with the playing of U2’s tribute “MLK,” a King video biography, and student recitations of a poem and excerpts from his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The entire student body joined in song for “Martin Luther King,” followed by a

moving performance of “We Shall Overcome” by the school’s select chorus. Serving as guest speaker was Huntington Town Councilwoman Tracey Edwards, who attended school in the district. She was introduced by her grandson, Boyd fourthgrader Troy. “Because of Martin Luther King, Jr. and all the things he did, it doesn’t matter what color you are,” Edwards told the children. “You can be whatever you want, here in America. All you have to do is three things: Work hard, be kind to everyone and have good character.” Edwards gifted each student with a notebook and urged them, “Write

down all your dreams and things you’d like to do to make your community a better place.” She also gave each child a blank business card, telling them to write in their own name and what they want to be when they grow up, then to work hard to become that person. Before a final performance of the inclusive poem “I Am Boyd” by students and staff, Boyd’s principal, Dr. Denise Toscano, offered final remarks, saying, “Internalize the lessons you learned today, and maybe someday you can be a Martin Luther King, Jr. and stand up for people, because love is the strongest power.”

enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home.
