Evening of Exploration Approximately 200 kindergarten through eighth-grade students and their families from the Elwood Union Free School District took part in a special Behind the Scenes with STEAM Expo on January 11th at Elwood Middle School. Sponsored by the Elwood Booster Club and PTA, the after school event allowed students to participate in engaging activities and workshops based on popular movies. Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen Kelly-Gorman and instructional technology specialist Krista Albrecht coordinated the event for students to explore and learn. Many teachers and administrators volunteered their time to make the night a success. “We believe getting students involved in STEAM at a young age is vital in preparing them to be able to think critically and problem solve,” said Ms. KellyGorman. “To have 200 students choose to return to school for three hours on a Wednesday afternoon to engage in STEAM learning was an incredible accomplishment for us.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert greeted those in attendance while ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School students also lended a hand with the activities. Students and their family members traveled to various rooms in the building to explore and create lightsabers, balloon rockets, a Baymax origami figure, a piano made with common objects and more. The Elwood Public Library was also present to lead a green screen photography activity. “We were so excited about the incredible turnout,” said Ms. Albrecht. “It was a wonderful way to encourage families to learn and explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics together. Our goal is to really encourage conversation and shared learning.”

The Suffolk County Community College Cheer team garnered a silver medal at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) 2017 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship held at Discover Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on January 14th. The team competed against nine other top college teams, earning a silver medal in UCA’s Open All Girl Division on only their second visit to the national competition according to the team’s head coach, Gina Caputo. “I am extremely proud of the accomplishments made by this team. It is a great moment for the Suffolk cheer program. The support from our families, friends and alumni fueled us every step of the way,” Caputo said. Pet Awareness Club donated over 90 pounds of food as well as cat/dog toys, dog collars and leashes. Dr. Russell Fredericks of North Shore Veterinary Hospital donated 50 certificates for free rabies vaccinations and first time office visits. Dr. Jason Heller of East Northport Animal Hospital donated a variety of pet care products and medicine. Berland and the Huntington Youth Council (HYC) donated $1,000 to two organizations at the Town Board meeting: $500 was donated to Smile Train, who provides free cleft lip and palate repair surgery and comprehensive care to children in need; and $500 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), whose mission is to advance life-saving research to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, while improving the quality of life for patients and their families. How Art Benefits Young Brains Art enriches lives and can be used to connect people from all walks of life. Among the many additional benefits of art is its effects on young people and the development of their brains. The American Association of School Administrators notes that neuroscience research has shown that the effects of the arts on a young brain’s cognitive, social and emotional development can be profound. Art helps to wire the brain. The AASA notes that especially young children spend much of their time playing, and that play often includes forms of art such as singing, drawing and dancing. These artistic activities engage various senses and help to wire the brain so it can learn. As children age, these seemingly basic activities remain essential for young brains. Art helps children develop their motor skills. Dancing and other movements that might be
prompted by exposure to art help children develop motor skills. Motor skills are necessary for kids to perform important and necessary daily tasks while also promoting independence. Art helps kids learn to think. The AASA notes that art can be a valuable tool in instilling essential thinking tools in children, including the ability to recognize and develop patterns, the ability to form mental representations of what is observed or imagined, and the ability to observe the world around them. Art can improve memory and focus. The AASA cites studies that listening to music can stimulate parts of the brain responsible for memory recall and visual imagery. In addition, background music played in a classroom has been shown to help students remain focused while completing certain learning tasks.
Art can positively affect how students approach other courses. Studies have shown that incorporating arts into core curriculums can have a number of positive effects on students’ overall academic performance and benefit students socially. Studies indicate that students involved in such integrative programs are more emotionally invested in their classes and work more diligently than those not studying in such conditions. In addition, students may learn more from one another when the arts are integrated into core curriculums than when they are not. Art is often mistakenly seen as a strictly fun component of children’s education. But the effects of art on young brains is considerable, helping young people develop in ways that may surprise many men and women.
Get the Most Out of Phys Ed Classes School gives students a chance to learn and grow. During the course of their academic careers, students explore many different subjects, hopefully finding at least one that inspires them to one day pursue rewarding careers. Physical education is one subject that is often overlooked. Gym class may seem like just a fun elective, but the importance of physical education cannot be understated, especially as so many youngsters struggle to maintain healthy weights. Physical education can help children live healthier, more fulfilling lives, benefitting
them in ways that go beyond their waistlines. Improved health and stamina: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that only 29 percent of high school students are getting the recommended 60 minutes a day of physical activity. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that young people between the ages six and 17 should get at least an hour of physical activity each day. Physical education classes can help students meet or exceed those physical activity
recommendations. Creates a love for sports: Gym class exposes students to various athletic activities, encouraging them to dabble in different sports. That opportunity may expose young children to a sport they will embrace and play for the rest of their lives. Improved academic performance: A large-scale study of 12,000 Nebraska schoolchildren published in The Journal of Pediatrics found that physical fitness could be linked to improved academic performance.

Should Schools Reinforce Cursive Writing Skills? Cursive writing lessons were once mandatory in schools. Many adults can remember cursive writing lessons on lined paper and time spent practicing this aesthetically appealing style of writing. But thanks to technology and a growing reliance on computers to complete school assignments, handwriting skills are no longer stressed as much as they once were. In fact, some children never receive cursive writing instruction. The absence of cursive writing lessons has led to a heated debate. Some people feel cursive writing is
archaic and a waste of time, while others believe it is a relevant skill. Here is a look at both sides of the debate. The Pros of Cursive Writing Various experts and educators have weighed in on the lasting benefits of cursive handwriting. Here are just a few of the benefits proponents of cursive writing point to. Cursive writing stimulates the brain. “Cursive writing helps train the brain to integrate visual and tactile information, and fine motor dexterity,” Dr. William Klemm said in an article in Psychology Today. The skills developed from learning cursive writing cannot be replaced by using a keyboard. In addition, MRIs have revealed an interesting relationship between handwriting and the brain. The brains of people with good handwriting are more active in areas associated with cognition, language and executive function than the brains of those with poor handwriting. Cursive writing may promote focus. Writing things down by hand forces a person to slow down and formulate his or her thought. Handwritten notes may hold the advantage over computer-typed notes in
terms of recollection of facts. Cursive writing may help students with dyslexia. Dyslexia is a language processing disorder that can hinder reading, writing, spelling and sometimes even speaking. According to the International Dyslexia Association, when writing cursive, the words jotted down become a unit, rather than a series of separate strokes, and that may contribute to better spelling. And since all lowercase cursive letters begin on the line, fewer of them are likely to be reversed. The Cons of Cursive Writing There are various reasons why people think lessons in cursive writing are unnecessary. Cursive writing is only used in signatures. Cursive writing is seldom used except for signatures. Even then, e-signing and online transactions have removed the need to write in cursive. Typing on a keyboard should take precedence. Many parents and educators believe that cursive writing lessons do little to prepare young students for an increasingly digital world. Such opponents of cursive writing suggest keyboarding lessons should take precedence over teaching handwriting skills. Teachers have admitted that cursive writing lessons take a lot of time, and many simply cannot devote classroom time to them. Digital texts make it obsolete. Some argue that those who do not know how to read in cursive can never understand historical texts or early manuscripts. However, so much has been transcribed into digital texts that this argument is seen by many as outdated. Cursive writing may be going the way of the dinosaur. Why Music Education Matters

A 2005 study from researchers at Stanford University found that mastering a musical instrument may also improve reading skills, which can benefit students both inside and outside the classroom. Music training can improve hand-eye coordination. Studies have linked long-term music training to improved hand-eye coordination. That is likely connected to the motor skills children develop when playing musical instruments. Without those instruments, those motor skills may not develop as strongly. Music improves concentration. Even students who cannot play a musical instrument can still benefit academically from simply listening to music. In 2007, a research team from the Stanford University School of

Teachers may rely on such devices to engage students, but one more traditional teaching tool can still be an asset in the classroom. Newspapers have changed considerably over the last decade-plus, but they still can serve teachers and students alike. The following are a handful of ways for teachers to incorporate newspapers into their lesson plans. Use newspapers to teach geography. Whether they’re local, national or international periodicals, newspapers contain stories from all over the globe. Teachers tasked with teaching students about world geography can assign each student an article about a newsworthy event taking place in a given country. Kids can then write a report about that country, including information about its location in the world, its citizens and its history. Use newspapers to teach vocabulary. Perhaps no
resource is more valuable than newspapers when teaching vocabulary. Assign each student a story or stories from the newspaper, instructing them to underline or jot down between five and 10 words they are unfamiliar with as they read. Once they have finished reading their assigned articles, students can then look up and write down the meaning of each word, ultimately handing in their list of words and/ or sharing those words and their meanings with their classmates. Use newspapers to teach mathematics. While newspapers are often touted as great tools to teach reading comprehension and vocabulary, they also can be used to teach math lessons. For example, newspaper classified sections typically list dozens, if not hundreds, of items for sale. Assign each student 10 vehicles listed in the classified section and ask them to calculate the average asking prices of these vehicles. Another potential lesson is to ask kids to
determine the percentage breakdown of each section of the newspaper. You can then explore the reasons why certain sections may be given more ink than others. Use newspapers to teach current events. The world is an interesting place, and newspapers are great resources for people looking to keep up with all that is going on in the world. While current events can sometimes be confusing for young students, newspaper reporters aim to convey complicated topics in ways that readers of all ages and backgrounds can understand. By assigning newspaper articles as part of their students’ current events assignments, teachers can help students gain a better understanding of what’s going on in their world. Come the 2016-2017 school year, the music and arts budget in the Los Angeles Unified School District will reach its highest point in a dozen years. While that’s great news for students, it also illustrates the sad fact that arts and music programs have taken a considerable hit in recent decades, when arts education fell victim to budget cuts. The benefits of music education extend far beyond getting kids to tap their toes. The National Association for Music Education lists the following benefits among the many reasons to support music education in schools. Music training helps develop language skills. Studies have shown that music training contributes to the physical development of the part of the left side of the brain associated with processing
Medicine found that music engages the areas of the brain involved with paying attention. Today’s students deal with numerous distractions, from smartphones to tablets to social media, but those who routinely listen to certain types of music might find it easier to block out those distractions and focus on their work. Music can help students’ e m o t i o n a l development. A 2003 study commissioned by Chorus America found musicians are more likely than the average person to be involved in charity work as volunteers and donors. The NAfME also notes that music students may be more likely to exhibit empathy toward other cultures. Music can improve self-esteem. In a study examining 117 fourth grade students attending public school in Montreal, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin found that children who received piano lessons weekly for three years had higher self-esteem than children who were not given piano lessons during the same period. Neither group had participated in formal music instruction before the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study. Music education can enrich the lives of young students in a myriad of ways, potentially contributing to happier, more fulfilling lives.

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after
“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to
the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

Honoring MLK James H. Boyd Intermediate School students honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with a special school-wide ceremony on January 13th. Family members and administrators attended the student-run event to celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy. The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance and a video presentation about the impact that Dr. King made on history. Students in Suzanne Reilly, Christina Tellekamp and Matthew Lauro’s class presented a biography about Dr. King and each stated a fact about his life and work.
Fifth-grade students in Amy Chiarello and Jacqueline Musto’s class read an anonymous poem titled “Martin Luther King” and Mr. Lauro’s class presented a game of Civil Rights Jeopardy. Three students participated in the game which educated the audience on topics such as segregation and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In addition, students read excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and the school’s chorus sang two songs titled, “Martin Luther King” and “We Shall Overcome” led by music teacher Linda Romano and math teacher Linda Scotto. To conclude the
ceremony, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert spoke to the students about Dr. King and asked them to reflect on the question, “has Dr. King’s dream come true?” He encouraged students to respect and accept everyone. “We are all equal despite our differences,” he said.

Who is Paying for the Increases? By: Jeff Lambert jlambert@southbaysneighbor.com
We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are
still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not
being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.
