The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes

East-Northport Middle School invited sixth graders from Northport Middle School to view a Theater Three theatrical production, “Class Dismissed: The Bully Project,” on Jan. 9. Performers acted out scenarios to demonstrate that bullying, harassment and peer pressure can occur both inside and outside

of school, including hallways, locker rooms, busses and even at home. Additionally, the production spoke about the influence social media has on one’s reputation, social cliques and rumors. The production’s main message however was “See it, say it, stop it.” The intention was to encourage

Congratulations to Harborfields High School’s Music Department Coordinator Daniel Bilawsky who was recently selected by the School Band and Orchestra Magazine to represent New York in its 22nd annual “50 Directors Who Make a Difference.” Directors are nominated by students, parents, colleagues, retailers, administrators, friends or even former band directors who may have taught them in the past. Only one director per state is awarded the prestigious honor each year. “This is truly an impressive accomplishment, “Superintendent of School Dr. Francesco Ianni said. Throughout Mr. Bilawsky’s 21 years of teaching, he said that his proudest moment as an educator occurred back in 2017 when the high school’s jazz band performed on the banks of the Mississippi River as part of the Loyola University Jazz Festival in New Orleans. The Northport-East Northport School District is proud to announce Northport High School senior Isabella DeBrino as the Science Student of the Month and senior Ryan Heinzman as the Technology and Engineering Student of the Month. District Chairperson of Science, Technology and Engineering Education David Storch described Isabella as an exemplary student “who pushes herself to be the very best.” She has taken honors scientific investigation courses in living environment, chemistry and physics, as well as four years of advanced placement science research. She is also currently working to complete her International Baccalaureate courses to earn an IB diploma in June. Since middle school, Isabella has developed original science experiments and

has won numerous science fairs. Additionally, she has worked on science research projects at both Johns Hopkins University and Stony Brook University. In addition to her science accolades, Isabella has been an essential contributor to many school and community extracurricular clubs and committees and, for years, has helped host the annual STEM Challenge at Northport High School. “The STEM Challenge is a great way to provide children with an opportunity to use creativity and critical thinking to solve a problem while also learning to work as a team,” Isabella said. Ryan Heinzman’s high school career has been just as impressive. Mr. Storch described him as a “bright and self-motivated young man with an outstanding sense of integrity. Over the past four years,

Ryan has taken seven technology courses, two Project Lead the Way engineering courses and every high school course on automotive and wood technology. Supplementing his technology classes, he has taken honors courses in Regents science and Advanced Placement calculus. Additionally, Ryan is a member of the Civil Air Patrol, where he raises funds for the unit and marches in the color guard. He also regularly volunteers at a respite program where he works with special needs children and their families. After graduation, Ryan plans to study technology and engineering education at SUNY Oswego. He intends to return to Northport High School after earning his degree to teach and give back to the community that shaped him.

Creating A Buzz About The Importance Of Bees The Helping Kids Help Bees project will educate the community about the declining bee population and the importance of and what to plant to attract and support bees. Hines is creating videos and activity sheets that will teach children how to create bee boxes and what plants to grow to attract bees. “Bees are dying. Colony collapse, pesticides, and human interference are killing bee colonies off by the thousands,” said Hines. “Something as simple as planting a flower garden outside will help bees find a safe, local food source. The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer. To receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of their lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. The program must also have procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs. “Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.” states Long Island Community Hospital President and CEO Richard T. Margulis. “Screening with low-dose computed tomography scans, in tandem with appropriate follow-up care, can significantly reduce

lung cancer deaths in our community.” Screenings are recommended for adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. The ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its 36,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians. John H. Glenn High School graduates may soon have the opportunity to walk the halls of their high school as the first members to be inducted into the district’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Starting this week, alumni, who graduated at least five years ago, are eligible to be nominated by a fellow graduate, teacher, coach or current student.

Nominations will then be reviewed by a selection committee, which will base their selection on certain criteria, including the nominees’ high school athletic career and their impact on the community. The first induction ceremony is scheduled for May 9 at 8 a.m. at the high school’s gymnasium. Following the induction, the celebration will move

to the athletic fields where the inductees will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the John H. Glenn High School baseball game. The Marines live by the motto of never leaving anyone behind. For some that includes a dog they have rescued during deployment, and have bonded with. The loyalty from Captain Dave and his unit and the dog that they rescued goes both ways, and now his wish is to bring her back home to the United States with him when he returns

soon. Guardians of Rescue have helped other military members pull off this same mission, and they are seeking public donations to help pull it off again. “Captain Dave’s loyalty to Sox is like no other, and he believes in the idea of not leaving her behind,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We know

that we can help bring Sox back to America to live out her life with him, but we need the public’s support, because it’s costly to do. We are grateful to be working with Nowzad shelter in Kabul, because without their assistance this pup would not have a chance of coming to America.” Captain Dave is stationed in a remote area in Afghanistan. He

is scheduled to come back home to the United States in early 2020. He can’t imagine leaving Sox behind because he loves her. He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their camp. He freed her, gave her food and water, and sent her on her way. However, Sox had different plans. Sox started coming back to their camp each day, feeling safe around the unit and seeking food and water. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that time that Captain Dave knew he could never leave her behind to fend for herself. “The bond I have with Sox is something I didn’t expect, but I just can’t leave her behind,” says Captain Dave. “If I don’t bring her home with me I am afraid I’ll always regret it and wonder about what happened to her. The challenge is available to students in fourth through eighth grade and encourages students to research real-world environmental problems to form creative solutions. Ms. Rae’s students – Sydney Bayer, McKenzie Coleman, Kerri Gadamowitz, Brooke Cheskes, Tara Gosselin and Maeve Baron – created

a conveyor belt to take plastic out of the ocean and have already begun to dispose of the debris by feeding it to wax worms. They have also been working with technology to create augmented reality sandboxes, motors and a 3D map of the Nissequogue River. According to the National Geographic Society website, teams with the best projects can advance to the regional and national levels of the competition.

Paws Of War Helps American Soldiers Bring Home Dogs Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. “After these dogs are rescued, they develop a spe-

cial bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. We need all the support we can get from the public in order to be successful with these efforts.” Army Sgt. Dominick, who is stationed in a remote area

of Afghanistan, first spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and

often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing

a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations.
