Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilwoman Tracey A. Edwards joined members of the Huntington Kiwanis Club on January 12th at a reception thanking people for their participation in the Kiwanis’ Field of Honor program, in which an impressive array of American ﬂags graces the front lawn of Town Hall from Labor Day to early December. A project of Kiwanis International nationwide and the Huntington Kiwanis, ﬂags are purchased to recognize a

specific individual who has served or is serving our country in the military. A map on the Town Hall lawn helps persons locate the ﬂag they have purchased that bears their honoree’s name. Proceeds from the project are used to send children of deployed service members to Kiwanis Camp, a weeklong summer camp upstate. Purchasers were invited to pick up their ﬂag at the reception, which was held at the restaurant Honu Kitchen in Huntington village. Those unable to make it to the reception

will be able to pick up their ﬂag at Town Hall. In their remarks, both Supervisor Petrone and Councilwoman Edwards thanked the Kiwanis for organizing the program, now completing its fifth year, and those who purchased ﬂags. Supervisor Petrone noted the importance of helping families of deployed members of the military; Councilwoman Edwards spoke of the many other ways the Kiwanis helps the community.

Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

Paying Tribute As part of a curriculum based assignment, ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School seniors in Allen Epstein’s government class created a presentation paying homage to the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. In place of a traditional term paper, seniors Saira Bhutta, Jenna Comeau, Kaitlyn Corazzata, Danan Herlich, Julia Hyacinthe and Jenna Yeisley worked together to gather information, create posters

and a detailed timeline of the Vietnam War. As part of their research, students conducted interviews with Vietnam veterans Michael Kalinowski and Jake Roth and acquired a civilian perspective from ElwoodJohn H. Glenn Interim High School Principal Dr. James Ruck whose brother, Thomas Ruck, fought in the war. The seniors were able to enhance their research experience

by studying authentic photos and documents from the veterans’ years of service. In addition, veterans Kalinowski and Roth lent students their military jackets to display in a window showcase to accompany their research and other gathered materials. “This presentation raises a level of awareness and remembrance of the historical events that took place during the Vietnam War,” said Dr. Ruck.

Students in Deborah Phillips second-grade class at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District had the opportunity to work on Chromebooks for individual and group

instruction. The district provides a cart of Chromebooks that allows student access to the Internet for a variety of lessons. For this instructional lesson, students used the reading program, “Raz-Kids” to

read books online and answer comprehension questions. “The class felt so grown up and loved using this new technology,” Phillips said.
