Go Red for Women Luncheon Let’s Unite! Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 17th annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women. For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. The Long Island American Heart Association’s 17th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 28th, 2018 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 2018 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and CVS Health. Brain Games

Students at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free District had a chance to show off their brainpower at a “Brain Challenge” assembly, put on by Hollyrock Entertainment, on January 9th. Much like a live game show, students were divided into two teams, and chosen contestants from each team went head-to-head on stage. Each group of students had to collectively answer trivia questions. Whichever team

buzzed in first answered first, and had the ability to rack up points. The questions focused on curriculum students learn in the classroom. Students were asked questions about math, biology, geography and more. Every few rounds, students were selected for physical challenges, like hula-hooping or spelling words with giant letters. Team members cheered and encouraged their classmates as they completed challenges.

The three juniors - Jillian Parker of High School West, and Arooba Ahmed and Jiachen Lee of High School East defeated more than 2,000 competitors from across the country to win the prize at the finals held at the George Washington University in Washington, DC, in early December. Their breakthrough research on how a specific protein is involved in the process of cell division could potentially help find treatments for three different types of diseases: cancer, neurodegenerative diseases like Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s, and also infectious diseases. “Winning this prize is a truly remarkable accomplishment,” said Supervisor Lupinacci, who presented the three students with proclamations noting their achievement. “Just as remarkable will be when their research leads to treatments for serious illnesses and we can say that the kernels of those treatments began in Half Hollow Hills science labs. I congratulate Jillian, Arooba and Jiachen, and look forward to their future success.”

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

During last week’s blizzard on January 4th, Dix Hills volunteer firefighters were standing by at their stations ready to respond for any emergencies. Firefighters at headquarters on Deer Park Avenue noticed that the strong winds

broke the bracket of an American Flag across the street from the firehouse, and the ﬂag was hanging upside down in distress and about to blow away in the storm. Firefighters Marc Ligator (carrying ﬂag) and Chanan Schupak braved the elements and

The Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs’ Council recently held their annual installation of officers and award ceremony. Huntington Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia administered the oath of office to the Executive Board members who are: President John McDonough of Northport, First Vice President Dan McConnell of Halesite, Second Vice President Chuck Brady

of Huntington Manor, Secretary Chris Ingwersen of Cold Spring Harbor, and Treasurer Gary Hontz of Eaton’s Neck. The Chief Todd Sammis Firefighter of the Year Award was presented to Firefighter/EMT Jake Milliken of the Northport Fire Department. Milliken was recognized for his heroic actions at the Gunther’s Tap Room fire last May. Milliken spotted the fire while driving on

Main Street, called in the alarm and assisted with the evacuation of residents living in apartments on the upper ﬂoors. The Fire Chiefs’ Council is comprised of the fire departments and ambulance squads that provide fire protection and emergency medical service throughout the Town of Huntington. Brain Games Students at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free District had a chance to show off their brainpower at a “Brain Challenge” assembly, put on by Hollyrock Entertainment, on January 9th. Much like a live game show, students were divided into two teams,

and chosen contestants from each team went headto-head on stage. Each group of students had to collectively answer trivia questions. Whichever team buzzed in first answered first, and had the ability to rack up points. The questions focused on curriculum students learn in the classroom. Students

were asked questions about math, biology, geography and more. Every few rounds, students were selected for physical challenges, like hula-hooping or spelling words with giant letters. Team members cheered and encouraged their classmates as they completed challenges.
