Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced today that he is seeking new members for the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB). The SOCAB was established in January 2014 as a way to enhance communication and improve collaboration with residents. It is part of Sheriff DeMarco’s overall policy of “citizen engagement” to promote ethical and responsive government representation. In addition to the SOCAB, the Sheriff hosts two other Boards – the Youth Re-entry Task Force and a Veterans Reentry Task Force. “Each one of these initiatives engages the public on important policy matters, and gives us a network of individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise to help us innovate and think outside the box when seeking solutions to problems,” stated DeMarco. He added, “Preserving public trust in law enforcement and giving the people we serve a true stake in government are the overriding reasons we emphasize citizen engagement at the Sheriff’s Office.” Anyone interested in learning more about the SOCAB should visit the Sheriff’s Office’s website at www.suffolksheriff.com and click the “Citizen Engagement” link on the top menu bar. Those interested in volunteering to serve on the SOCAB should send a letter and resume to Sheriff DeMarco at Suffolk_ Sheriff@suffolkcountyny. gov or by mail to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, 100 Center Drive, Riverhead, NY 11901. months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few

Lost Pages It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Students Spread Warmth Northport High School’s Future Educators Association club participated in a blanket making party on December 20th where members created 10 no-sew blankets to donate to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. The club’s blanket making party has become an annual tradition. Members dressed in

comfortable clothing and ate pizza while watching a video on how to properly create a no-sew blanket. They then worked together to cut and tie the fleece to transform it into a usable blanket. In addition to creating blankets for those in need, the club also put together a special camouflage blanket for one of the member’s brothers, who is going

through cancer treatment. “Our goal is to service children and families in the community,” said club adviser Antonette DiGiacomo. “The students are in this club because they love children and we try to select projects that service our local community as much as possible.”

Writing in a Winter Wonderland Denise Sullivan’s second-graders at Washington Drive Primary School shared their original written works with family members during the school’s Winter Wonderland Literacy Celebration on December 22nd. Dressed in formal attire, students kicked

off the celebration with a performance of winter musical numbers, including “Let It Snow,” “Jingle Bells” and “Winter Wonderland,” accompanied by bell chimes. Afterward, they shared the compositions that they had diligently worked on over the past six weeks

during an in-class writer’s workshop. Each student presented a persuasive, a narrative and a poetry piece to his or her family member. The celebration concluded with snacks and refreshments for all in attendance.

The LIU Post Art Department will honor three students from local high schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties at the awards ceremony for “Advanced Visions 13: High School Artists of Excellence,” to be held at the University’s Hutchins Gallery on January 25th, 2017. All of the participating students were selected by their teachers to represent their high schools in the exhibition. The exhibition recognizes the superior work being done by high school students in Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Portfolio Preparation art programs across Long Island and is on view through January 25th, 2017. activity to expand their literacy skills. Similar to musical chairs, each child received a “train ticket,” which featured a word. The activity allowed them to move to different seats on the “train” and read a new word on each seat. When they got the word correct, they rang a bell. FEA members split the kindergartners up into two groups and seniors facilitated two interactive SmartBoard activities related to “The Polar Express.” They talked about the book and engaged with different words. To end the celebration, each club member sat with a kindergartener and played Holiday Bingo, using simple words such as gift, ring, tree and snow. Embracing Cultures include gatherings to view the new moon, decorating homes inside and out, family visits, eating special sweet foods, neighborhood fairs, visits to amusement parks, wearing new clothes and giving and receiving gifts. Four students in the class celebrate the holiday and were able to share their own family traditions as well. In addition to Eid alFitr, the class also learned about Christmas, Diwali, Kwanzaa and Las Posadas. Two family members, Mr. Noah and Mrs. Cassidy, visited the classroom to share their traditions and a brief background about

the Hanukkah holiday. The students ate latkes and looked at different menorahs. They also learned how to play dreidel. “It was a fun-filled learning experience for all,” said Coppola. Much like Coppola’s class, all of Washington Drive Primary School’s first-grade classes celebrated cultures and holidays from around the world. Students worked on a special project where they created a window with pictures of their own holidays and traditions. The projects were displayed in the first-grade hallway.

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the

holiday celebrations as imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time.
