“Heart Attack” Noodles By Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York
Don’t let the name of this dish scare you, but we do recommend splurging on this one as a once in a while treat! For Larry Micalizzi of East Islip, New York, his mom’s famous “Heart Attack” Noodles are connected to his fondest memories of growing up in Levittown. As he tells it, this fun dish was a staple at just about every special occassion. “My mom made this dish for my family for as long as I can remember. She would prepare it for our neighborhood block parties, for Christenings, and on Christmas. This dish was always a big hit!” *Editor’s Note: Try serving with a side of sauteed greens for a balanced meal
What You Will Need:
1 Bag of Egg Noodles 1 Lb. of Fatty Bacon (you’ll need the fat for flavor) Fine Bread Crumbs - plain is best
Preparation:
Prepare Egg Noodles and set aside Cook bacon until crispy and set aside Pour warm bacon fat over egg noodles Crumble bacon and add to noodles Add in fine bread crumbs until all bacon fat is absorbed (you can eyeball it)

Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges. What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier. Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much. These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness. I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to
LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions. If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay. Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you. If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?” “Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition. Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,
my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop. Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day. You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”

January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation
Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.
Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, encourages long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and supports efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for about 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and are pursuing their personal goals while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. What is often missing is communitybased, grass roots support networks... the inter-connected social fabric that will secure life-long inclusion for individuals with disabilities as the basic human right that it is! This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff ), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Some of their initiatives are Big Time GLEE, which is a grass roots singing group that meets every other week; Crafting Connection, which allows individuals to gather every other week to scrapbook, paint, draw and do more crafty
projects and lastly, Mid-Week Meetups, which help people develop friendships based on shared interests and explore new social and recreational opportunities across Long Island! Some other initiatives this organization supports are Nassau Voice, Speed Friending, Yoga Without Boundaries, Emergency Preparedness Classes and the Nature Experience. Looking to donate? This foundation is collecting donations of crafting supplies to help manage their expenses for the Crafting Connection. Additionally, monetary donations are always welcomed and helpful because they allow this foundation to run more classes and events throughout Long Island. Lastly, they are looking for local venues that can donate some space to their foundation so they can offer more events! Looking to volunteer? The PBS Community Foundation is currently looking for volunteers to assist in leading their Nassau Voice singing group once a month. Additionally, volunteers are also needed for various fundraising events throughout the year. Don’t Make These Mistakes after A Collision (NewsUSA) - In the U.S. alone, there are 10 million car accidents every year, and the tense moments following a car accident, even a minor one, can be scary and stressful for everyone involved. Drivers and passengers can feel confused and unsure of what to do. Even the most experienced and seasoned drivers can make basic mistakes after they have been involved in a traumatic event. Simple, avoidable mistakes could cost you time and money, or lead to
personal, medical and legal issues. Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid after a collision: * Fleeing the scene: Leaving the scene of an accident could land you in serious legal trouble. You may be in shock, but the most important thing to do is stay where you are. Check on your passengers, and once you exit your vehicle, check with the other driver involved in the accident. Try to remain calm and wait for law enforcement
to arrive on the scene. If it is safe to do so, use your cell phone to take photos of your vehicle to document the damage that resulted from the accident while you wait for police. * Not reporting the accident: Even if it’s just a minor collision, always report the accident to the police. Never let someone convince you to avoid calling the police. If you decide to make a claim with your insurance company later on, or if you decide to pursue a legal
claim, not reporting the accident could hurt your case. * Exchanging too much information: Do not share your driver’s license or who was at fault with the other driver; however, share this information with the police along with your current insurance. Always exchange contact information with the other driver, get contact info from any witnesses, and obtain full insurance details from other drivers involved in the accident. Make sure accurate
information is included in the police report, and ask for a copy of the report to edit any incorrect information. * Failing to get medical advice: You may think that you were lucky enough to escape injury, but you should always get a medical checkup after a car accident, especially if you hit your head. Remember, only a medical professional can rule out possible head trauma and other serious injuries. * Having your vehicle

This holiday season at Dickinson Avenue in the Northport-East Northport School District, students in the fifth grade Leadership Club worked together to collect canned food items for the Grinch for Good Campaign. This nationwide effort aims to grow the community’s hearts three sizes — just like the Grinch’s — by giving to those in need during the Christmas season. Dickinson Avenue’s donations in particular are being given to Long Island Cares, an organization that
seeks to feed the hungry and help families become self-sufficient on Long Island. Students created a video to send out to their schoolmates to encourage them to donate to help meet the club’s goal of 500 cans. “It’s important to raise awareness about people less fortunate than us,” said Ryan D., a fifth-grader at Dickinson. “It’s easy to forget how many people don’t have things we take for granted like, food or warm clothes.” The school’s leadership
club includes the entire fifth-grade, and students participate in various service projects throughout the year, and students are encouraged to come up with their own fundraising ideas. In addition to collecting food items, the school has been conducting a toy drive, gift card drive, and more. “I’m so proud of our students for actively seeking ways to give back,” said Principal Laurie Storch. “They have such big hearts.”
Santa Visited Asharoken Village Asharoken got into the holiday spirit as Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived for a visit at Asharoken Village Hall, where he spread holiday greetings and hearty “Ho, Ho, Ho’s” to all. Santa was greeted by Asharoken Mayor Greg Letica and Village
Trustees as he arrived on his sleigh from the North Pole with the assistance of the Northport Fire Department. Santa was warmly welcomed by Village officials, police, residents, and lots of happy wide-eyed children. Santa and his helpers distributed

Decorating Delicious Houses houses. Students each invited a loved one to visit during the afternoon and had help building their creations. Many parents and loved ones helped by donating a lot of the delicious materials used to build the houses as well.
Using frosting as glue, marshmallows for snow and more, students built their little houses around milk cartons and enjoyed spending quality time with their loved ones.

Free Smoking Cessation Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible. “Quitting smoking is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since
the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit to sign up for these informative classes and get healthier.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn't when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have shown that tobacco users who try to break their
addiction with behavioral support are more likely to be successful than those who try to do so without support.” The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more than 19,000 residents. The program is a seven-week course that uses a comprehensive approach in the treatment of tobacco product dependence. Educational and behavioral strategies are provided to assist the
patient in developing a quit plan to eliminate the use of tobacco products or electronic nicotine delivery systems, also called ENDS. The program also provides over-the counter medications for a fee to participants who are medically eligible. To register for the Learn to Be Tobacco Free program, contact the Suffolk County Department of Health Services at 631853-2928.
