Snowscape By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

Sea Tow is proud to announce that the “StuffA-Boat” donation drive for the 2013 holiday season was a huge success. Sponsored nationally by Sea Tow Services International, the nation’s leading marine assistance service provider, and hosted by Sea Tow operators across the country, the campaign’s goal is to provide those less fortunate in local communities with some badly needed assistance and cheer during the 2013 holiday season. The Southold “Stuff a Boat” donation drive hosted by Sea Tow Services International, Inc., took place December 7th through 14th. All collected donations benefited CAST

(Community Action of Southold Town) as well as NFAWL (the North Fork Animal Welfare League) and were delivered on Tuesday, December 17th despite the snow. Sea Tow International employees gathered in the morning and stuffed the Sea Tow Twin-Vee boat that had been servicing Montauk boaters this past summer with all the donations. Students from Mattituck High School as well as Southold Pack 6 Cub Scouts volunteered to be at Sea Tow International headquarters and collect donations. Sea Tow hosted a raffle for the Cub Scout volunteers, and another raffle for the Southold and Mattituck/Cutchogue

Elementary Schools students who made donations. The Webelos 1 den won the Scout raffle, and Aiden Russell, a 5th grader from Southold Elementary, won the school raffle. “The ‘Stuff a Boat’ campaign is our way of giving back to Southold and to other local communities nationwide,” said Capt. The Long Island Community Foundation has awarded a $30,000 grant to Suffolk County United Veterans to help launch 24-hour, peersupported Crisis Respite and support services program for Veterans who are experiencing risk symptoms such as those associated with mental health challenges of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury. The Crisis Respite program will operate at the newly-named John J. Lynch Veterans Place Shelter in Yaphank and will provide a safe milieu for Veterans experiencing distress. Such a respite can, where

indicated, be instead of psychiatric hospitalization and can help bolster a connection or a plan for more aggressive peer support and professional intervention. The new program is intended to partner with the Pfc. Joseph Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project as well as the outreach work of the Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) project, and SCUV’s ongoing homeless intervention work. “The challenges of returning Vets remain a significant concern on Long Island” stated Suffolk County United Veterans Executive Director Michael Stoltz. Long Island is

home to more Veterans than any metropolitan region in the US aside from San Diego “This aggressive intervention and rapid support program will be another element in our system to help transitioning Vets deal with acute stressors, be safe and sober, resume recovery, and restore family and professional support.” The program will launch in mid-to-late January. Grant Award

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today honored Fred Pollert for his 37 years of service to Suffolk County residents by presenting him with the distinguished Suffolk County Public Service Award. The Suffolk County Public Service Award, is the highest honor to be bestowed on an individual for extraordinary and exemplary service to the people of Suffolk County. “I can’t think of anyone who could be more deserving of being honored with the County’s highest award than Fred Pollert.” Bellone said. For almost four decades, Fred has worked to make government more efficient and save taxpayer dollars. He is one of the most

dedicated public servants I have ever encountered and I will be forever grateful to him for coming out of retirement in 2012 to help navigate the County through the worst fiscal crisis in its history.” Pollert worked for 27 years for the Suffolk County Legislature’s Budget Review Office, serving as Director, six years as Deputy County Executive for Finance under County Executive Steve Levy and two years as Vice President for Administration for the Long Island Power Authority. For the past two years he has served as Deputy County Executive for Finance and Management under County Executive Bellone, returning to County

service in order to work with County Executive Bellone on fiscally responsible items to put Suffolk County back onto strong fiscal footing without piercing the tax cap. The award was created during the administration of County Executive John Klein and designed by then Chief Deputy County Executive Arthur Bergmann. It was first presented in 1973 and over the past 40 years, it has only been presented to 17 individuals. The first was presented to H. Lee Dennison, who served as Suffolk’s first County Executive.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone held a press conference to announce the commencement of year-round Sunday bus service on ten bus routes in Suffolk County beginning January 5th, 2014. “Providing additional transportation opportunities for Suffolk County will give residents who are in need of transportation on Sundays the opportunity to shop, attend church services, and get to work without having to rely on family or friends or just not having the opportunity to travel on Sundays,” said County Executive Bellone. “I would like thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this legislation and supporting transportation initiatives in the County as well the Welfare to Work Commission. We started with the East End, providing Sunday bus service on two routes and now we are rolling out service to eight additional bus routes.” “We must do everything we can to improve our transit infrastructure and provide options for our residents to travel throughout Suffolk County, said County Executive Bellone. “Investments in our infrastructure serve as

HOSPITAL VISIT - The Sons of Italy, Sgt John Basilone Lodge #2442 visited the veterans at the Veterans Hospital in Northport to celebrate their annual Birthday Party and Christmas Celebration. Middle School students learned the value of giving back by working together to make the holidays a little brighter for those less fortunate. Students throughout the district took part in the

annual mitten tree drive, sponsored by the school’s student council, in which they decorated a tree with mittens, gloves, hats and scarves. This year, the initiative was expanded to include clothing items for infants. The collections were then donated to local

shelters. “It is important to give back,” said eighth-grade student council president Katie Kaplan. “These are the basics that we take for granted. There are people who don’t have these things at all.”

Second-grade students of Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District took part in the annual Harley Holiday Celebration. The program was conducted under the direction of Harley music teacher Christina Long, with accompaniment by local piano teacher Marge Margolf. The performance featured students reciting the poem “Holiday,”

On Thursday December 26th at 3:21 p.m., Suffolk County EMS First Responder, Christine Hogan, answered a 911 emergency call for active maternity help. Christine’s over the phone instructions would prove vital in successfully bringing a bouncing baby girl into this world. As delivery became eminent, Christine began to provide postdispatch and pre-arrival instructions which included clearing the infant’s airway and tying off the umbilical cord. Christine answered the call with one patient, and quickly found herself with two. She smoothly transitioned to a multiple patient scenario while maintaining a professional demeanor throughout the entire call. “Christine provided care for a Suffolk County resident, and her family, at a level consistent with both, the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services,” said Commissioner Joseph Williams, Fire, Rescue, Emergency Services (FRES). “Christine should truly be commended for a job well done.” Christine consistently remained calm and reassuring toward the caller as she assisted in the successful delivery of the newborn baby girl. The Suffolk County Police Department along with the Brentwood Legion Ambulance arrived on scene post-delivery, to take over pre-hospital care of both the mother and her newborn. “Our men and women of Emergency Medical Services in Suffolk County have consistently gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I am proud of Christine’s unwavering composure and thank her for her commitment to serve the people of Suffolk County.”
