The recent assignment for students in 7th grade was to share those things that they were thankful for through the creation of a Buncee multi-media presentation. The focus of the assignment, and the sharing between students makes this a very uplifting exercise. The level of technical capabilities displayed and shared between students is equally impressive.

On The Horizon By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be. Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. Positive or negative, response equals readership, and

at least a limited degree of engagement. So let’s head into 2015 with the goal of making #500 just the beginning of the next wave of milestones. Students at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District enjoyed a special PTA arts in education interactive Strummin and Drummin, performance on December 19th. The multicultural music show included original sing-along songs and provided students with hands-on opportunities

to play instruments and sing in front of their peers. “Strummin and Drummin” performances combines early childhood music curriculum with humor, fun and silliness for children of all musical abilities. Brothers Matt and Chris, developed the idea and materials for “Strummin and Drummin” after years of teaching and working

with children. Sharing their love of music with children since 2010, the band has performed in over 200 shows all along the east coast. “‘Strummin and Drummin’ brings the magic of music to the next generation of listeners and potential musicians,” Matt said.

Sunshine Toy Drive The eighth annual Sunshine Toy Drive was a huge success this year, due to the many generous contributions and dedicated work by volunteers. The Holiday Toy Drive for the needy was the idea of 16 year-old Victoria Plumitallo of Dix Hills, who began the drive eight years ago with the assistance of her parents, Mike and Hope Plumitallo. Derived from her nickname “Sunshine,”

Victoria’s idea to help the less fortunate grew into the “Sunshine Toy Drive” hosted by the Dix Hills Fire Department. The firehouse was turned into a toy store, where children and their families were assigned a personal shopper to help them select gifts which were wrapped by volunteers. Assisted by friends, family, firefighters and local volunteers, the fundraising effort was a

huge success. Well over 1,000 children were assisted by the drive with holiday gifts this season. Special thanks to the Dix Hills, Melville, Greenlawn, Huntington Manor fire departments, Park Shore Day Camp, Duffy and Duffy Law firm, Bob Elliott, Crown Advertising, Half Hollow Hills School District and Spuntino’s Restaurant for their support and generosity.

Birthday Wishes Bringing birthday joy to children and families in need, members of the Oldfield Middle School National Junior Honor Society in the Harborfields Central School District decorated and filled boxes with party supplies to help homeless children celebrate their birthday. Birthday Wishes is a non-profit organization that helps bring the magic of a birthday party to

research, students created posters, banners, and brochures and brought in artifacts that corresponded to the holiday they were assigned. Students dressed in costume to depict their holidays and prepared food to serve during the multicultural festival.

Toys Of Kindness In honor of the giving holiday, the Acts of Kindness Committee at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District sponsored its annual Toy Drive during the month of December. For the past 10 years, physical education instructors Kathleen

Taylor and Carrie Miller have been instrumental in orchestrating the schoolwide Toy Drive. With the support of students, faculty members and the generosity of many parents in the Harborfields community, the school was able to assemble a wide variety of different toys. All the toys collected are

given to the Harborfields Alliance for Community Outreach (HACO), an organization committed to serving those families in need within the Harborfields area. “The kids get excited about giving and knowing it goes back to our community here is even more special,” Miller said.

Student Spotlight GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine. I enjoyed this volunteer effort. Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need. I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our food pantry is a designated pick-up

For the third consecutive year, students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in Pajama Program’s One Million Good Nights campaign, collecting sets of new pajamas for children in need. Coordinated by thirdgrade teachers Cris Brooks and Enza LaSpisa,

the school collectively gathered over 350 pairs of pajamas and dropped off the donated pajamas at Community Housing Innovations in Commack.
