nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support to victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease and famine. Each year, more than 80,000 volunteers across the country help to prepare shoe boxes for distribution and international shipment. In 2019, more than 10.5 million shoe boxes were collected throughout Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the
United States. This year, John Glenn students packed a total of 35 shoe boxes, which were then delivered to Island Christian Church in East Northport to be distributed to children around the world in need. World Language Honor Society advisers Nicole Correia and Nicole Gendjoian agreed, “Our students went above and beyond this year and we appreciate the thought and time that went into filling each box.”

What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind. This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to five gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated. There are many ways you can help out with Angels of Long Island and there is much more to write about. Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a

External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based
program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

Better Breathers Club For the estimated 16 million Americans living with cardiopulmonary disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), participating in a support group can improve their emotional well-being and have a positive impact on their health. That is why Surge Rehabilitation and Nursing, located at 49 Oakcrest Ave in Middle Island, has joined with
the American Lung Association (ALA) to form a Better Breathers Club at the facility which offers an opportunity for cardiopulmonary disease patients to connect virtually, via ZOOM, with others who are facing similar experiences, obtain practical information and to receive support. The Middle Island facility has had a pulmonary support group for several years, but the partnership
with the ALA is a new venture, resulting in twice the number of group participants. “With this support group we hope to promote respiratory health and a better sense of well-being for those living with chronic lung disease,” Robert Madigan, Director of the Cardio Pulmonary program at Surge. The support group can also address lingering issues experienced by patients who
have had COVID-19. The support group will cover an introduction to cardiopulmonary diseases; the benefits of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation; the role of family support in cardiopulmonary disease; heart healthy medical nutrition therapy and communicating with healthcare professionals. The monthly support group meets every 3rd Wednesday at 1pm of the month and is
