It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.
One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.
My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us. I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose. I do believe we should be mindful of our habits, our lifestyles and ourselves, always bettering ourselves to make the world a better place. However, I believe we should get in a habit of thinking more of others and less of ourselves.

This New Year, instead of thinking of how much weight you want to lose, how many countries you want to travel to, what job promotion you want to achieve or what you want others to think of you, try changing your mindset to think of how you can help others. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution can be to volunteer once a week at a local non-profit, donate all your unwanted clothes instead of throwing them in the garbage,
After plenty of research, the organization I started my fundraiser through is The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water. I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. At its December 19th meeting, the Harborfields Central School District’s Board of Education and administration honored students who placed in a recent business competition. Three hundred students from across Long Island participated in the Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce’s 16th

Northport students enrolled in the high school’s LEAD class traveled to elementary schools throughout the district to teach children about the Bill of Rights on December 13th. LEAD students participate in government and understanding of basic economic concepts through leadership, and for this topic in particular worked together to create fun, relatable skits to teach
elementary students about why the Bill of Rights is so important. Each group wrote their own material, using fun movie references like Despicable Me, the Lion King, Frozen, and more. Elementary students were fascinated with the twists put on familiar movie scenes — including a scene from Monster’s Inc., where a character named Boo explained to monsters Mike and Sully
why entering her house through her closet broke the fourth amendment. “This class sounded interesting when I selected it, but it really surprised me with how much I love breaking down important concepts for kids,” said Nick, a senior enrolled in LEAD. “It’s really important to show them that everyone should have knowledge about our rights as Americans.”

Chewy Macaroons
By Ika Campbell of Miller Place, New York Ika Campbell of Miller Place, New York is a recipe buff with a special affinty for what our nation’s presidents ate throughout the decades. In fact, one of the prized possessions in her kitchen is a cookbook filled with past presidents’ favorite family recipes. Ika particularly loves whipping up Chewy Macaroons for her family during holidays and special occasions. She shares that this macaroon recipe was a family favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Johnson family, during their time in the White House.
What You Will Need:
2 liquid egg whites 1 pinch of salt 1 half cup of sugar 1 cup sweetened, shredded coconut 1 half teaspoon of vanilla extract
Preparation:
Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Beat egg whites with salt until stiff Gradually beat in sugar until stiff (shiny peaks will form) Slowly fold in coconut and vanilla
Baking:
Drop by the teaspoonful onto a lightly greased baking sheet Leave about 2 inches in between each cookie on the sheet Bake on the middle shelf for 20 minutes or until golden brown
Serving:

A Little Bit Goes A Long Way There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.” I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. It simply isn’t true. Another old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” is one of the most brilliant lines ever spoken (it originated from an old Chinese proverb, which was translated into English). I was just speaking with a coworker about the holidays. As we were discussing the copious amounts of food many of us tend to consume during the holiday season and how gym memberships are often initiated in January and not followed through with, I jokingly told her about my “Lazy Girl Workout.”
I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right? Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game. Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then
why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps. Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something. To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the file cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

Annual Family STEM Night Children and adults came together at the Northport-East Northport School District’s second annual STEM Family Night on Dec. 11. This event, which took place at East Northport Middle School, provided kindergarten through fifth-grade scientists, engineers and mathematicians with the opportunity to engage, experiment and explore with a multitude of resources. Parents joined their children in the STEM Challenge Café, which featured activities designed and facilitated by district
STEM teachers and assisted by Technology and Engineering Honor Society, physics, Academy of Information Technology and calculus high school students. Activities available to students included Kodable and Scratch coding, VEX robotics, Snap Circuits and Laser Mazes, Ozobots & Hexbots, math games and more. “Our K-5 learners and parents exercised their creativity and problemsolving skills as their natural curiosity was inspired,” said David Storch, the district
chairperson of science and technology education. Parents and children also attended a Math Fluency Game Café, where they worked together in grade-level activities to strengthen mathematical skills. Additionally, during two parent workshops that focused on Math Technology Resources and an Update on the State of Elementary STEM Teaching and Learning, children enjoyed the STEM Challenge Café, experimenting with one activity to the next.
The Gift of Kindness First grade students from Mrs. Maryellen Olsen and Mrs. Jordana Schmit’s class at Dickinson Avenue Elementary in the Northport-East Northport School District learned about a different kind of gift this holiday season: kindness. For each day leading up to winter break, students were encouraged to give a “gift” to someone in the form of a gesture — like writing a kind
note, giving a compliment or helping a parent with chores. The different “gifts” were written on paper cutouts of presents and strung around the classroom. “We wanted to teach our students an important lesson — that all gifts are not tangible,” said Mrs. Olsen. In class on Dec. 18, students exchanged letters they wrote to each other. Children complimented
one other on things like their clothing style, smile and sweet detailed things, like admiring how they’re able to run at recess. “I love how you treat me, and that you’re always kind to me when I’m sad,” one letter read. Students all had smiles on their faces as they read their classmates letters, learning the lesson that some of the best gifts aren’t “things.”

gingerbread lessons included gingerbread I-Spy, counting different types of gingerbread men on a platter, creating a gingerbread man in disguise and more. On December 13th, family and loved ones visited their kindergartners to help them build gingerbread houses. Using frosting
as glue, marshmallows for snow and many other sweet treats as building materials, students built their houses around milk cartons with a holiday Yule Log crackling on the Smart Board in the background. When finished, students were proud of their creations, and were excited to bring them home for the holidays.

Edwards has served on the Board of United Way of Long Island since 2016. (NAPSI)—The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages patients and families to Be Antibiotics Aware by learning about safe antibiotic use. Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people get infected with antibioticresistant bacteria. At least 23,000 die as a result. Antibiotic resistance, one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health, occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them.
