Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family
Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Thomas J. Lahey Elementary Shouts Holiday Spirit Keeping with tradition, students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School shouted, danced and swayed to holiday classics during the school’s annual Holiday Sing-along on Dec. 20. Harborfields High School students joined district teachers and retirees on the auditorium stage and sang songs,
including “Frosty the Snowman,” “Jingle Bells” and “Santa Clause is coming to town.” The event concluded with the singing of “The 12 Days of Christmas” to which students and teachers held up laminated posters depicting “five golden rings” and “a partridge in a pear tree.,” among others.
The day’s festivities followed a performance by the school’s orchestra on Dec. 19. Under the direction of Nick Rinaldi, students parked their stands and played their instruments near the school’s main entrance to welcome students and offer them a warm and joyous holiday break.
Friends Of The Greenhouse “Nick” Seeds To Help Monarchs Northport High School’s Friends of the Greenhouse are doing their part to help the declining populations of monarch butterflies. The club’s adviser, Janet Byler, set up shop in her classroom where students used a scalpel to “nick” the
seeds of native plants to increase their propagation of milkweed. Ms. Byler explained that milkweed is the monarchs favorite and only food source as caterpillars. The group’s goal is to grow more than
50 seedlings in the greenhouse during the winter and plant them around the community in May. In preparation, the students prepped the exterior gardens near the greenhouse for winter.

achieving the rank of Eagle and just how special this occasion is for John and his family,” said Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland. “He should be incredibly proud of all of the work he has done for his community and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Students Get Inside Look At Sports Marketing Roughly 80 Northport High School’s sports marketing students were welcomed to New York Jets Sports Business Day at MetLife stadium. Every year, the New York Jets invite more than 100 schools located within the Tri-State area for tours
of the stadium. Along the way, students heard from front office members of the Jets organization, including head of finance, marketing and sales. Christopher Goodwin, one of the school’s business teachers, said that the tours provided his students with

Congratulations to Elwood-John H. Glenn High School students – Colby Knorr, Andrew Morra, Sasha Jamal and Felipe Gonzalez – who were recently named November Students of the Month. Every month, students from the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior classes nominate their classmates to be selected for the honor, which is based not solely on academic achievements but rather on character, integrity and personal accomplishments. Freshman Colby Knorr was described by his nominator as “very friendly” and “supportive” to all of his classmates. “Colby always makes
sure to include everyone [and] is consistently the first person to help others,” Freshmen Class President Cateyann Bernhard said. “He is one of the most positive role models I know.” Sophomore Class President Ally Haddad shared similar remarks about her nominee: sophomore Andrew Morra. “Andrew is always eager to participate in school activities…and is an excellent athlete who never fails to help his friends,” she said. “He is always willing to give a helping hand or crack a smile.” Junior Sasha Jamal also serves as an active member of the school community as a dedicated member of the school’s track team
and music department. Her classmates wrote that “she is consistently a friendly face in the hallway and never shies away from including people she does not know.” Similarly, the senior class described their nominee, Felipe Gonzalez, as a student with a “contagious smile.” Amidst his school work, Felipe is involved in the school’s music department as well as a number of after school activities. “He is always willing to help those around him,” his classmate wrote. “His overall presence and exuberance make this building even brighter.”

Cacic Wins Student Essay Competition Congratulations to Northport High School senior Luke Cacic, who recently won the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation student essay competition. Luke was the sole winner of the foundation’s high school scholarship, winning the grand prize of $2,000. He was also invited to attend the Victims of Communism Triumph of Liberty Conference
and gala dinner on Nov. 8 at Union Station in Washington, D.C. To win the scholarship, Luke wrote a superior essay on the existence of the Berlin Wall and the ills of communism. His essay evaluated former President Ronald Reagan’s first impression of the Berlin Wall, in which he said, “It’s as ugly as the idea behind it.” The Victims of Commu-
nism Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization, authorized by a unanimous act of Congress in 1993, whose sole mission is to educate new generations about the ideology, history and legacy of communism. According to its website, “We tell the truth about communism because our vision is for a world free from the false hope of communism.”

7 Ways Newspapers Benefit Students Classrooms have come a long way since the days when pioneering settlers would send their children to singleroom schoolhouses. Modern classrooms might be technical marvels, but one less flashy learning tool remains as valuable as ever. Newspapers might not be as glamorous as tablets or other gadgets, but they are still an invaluable resource to educators and students. The following are seven ways in which newspapers in the classroom can benefit students. 1. Newspapers build vocabulary. Numerous studies have found that reading can improve youngsters’ vocabulary. Each day, newspapers are filled with fresh stories that can introduce kids to new words, helping them to strengthen their vocabularies and make them more effective communicators. 2. Newspapers improve reading skills. Like the old adage says, “Practice makes perfect.” Reading newspapers each day can help kids develop their reading and comprehension skills.
3. Newspapers promote critical thinking. Newspaper reporters are trained to objectively report the news, sharing facts without allowing their own opinions to influence their stories. Educators can choose stories from the newspaper to serve as catalysts for discussions that focus not just on the facts listed in the story, but what might be behind them. Such discussions can help youngsters develop their critical thinking skills. 4. Newspapers bring ideas and current events to life. Many children are aware of major world events, even if they don’t know or understand the details. Newspaper articles about world events can be used as avenues to discussions about what’s going on in the world. 5. Newspapers build global awareness. Customized newsfeeds funneled through social media outlets can make it hard for young people to recognize and understand the world beyond their own communities and interests. Each days, newspapers include local, national and international stories that can illustrate to kids that there’s a world beyond
their own. 6. Newspapers promote social consciousness. Without newspapers, young people may never be exposed to the social issues facing their own communities or those issues that are affecting people across the country and the world. Newspapers provide unbiased exposure to such issues, potentially leading youngsters to further explore topics that are shaping their world and even encouraging them to form their own opinions. 7. Newspapers make learning fun. According to a 2017 report from Common Sense Media, kids younger than eight spend an average of two hours and 19 minutes per day looking at screens. Newspapers provide a welcome break from tablets, smartphones and computers, and kids may have fun flipping pages and getting a little ink on their hands. Newspapers remain invaluable resources that can benefit students in myriad ways.
