n April 19th, Melissa Martin’s kindergarten class invited parents and relatives to partake in a pre-Earth Day classroom celebration. The children worked together on activities which included tie-dying T-shirts, creating entries for a class “ecology” book, a nature walk of the beautiful on-campus trails, the decoration of earth window-clings and even a Smart Board exercise of virtual recycling. You’ve walked into a movie theatre or arena of some sort – one with “No Outside Food Or Drink Permitted” signs clearly plastered on every entrance – smuggling some type of snack in a well-concealed pocket, a purse, under your hat…whatever. Why should you pay an exorbitant price for refreshments when you can surely find something for far less at a local convenience store, right? It’s a great idea, in theory. What’s the harm in bringing a bottle of water, a candy bar, maybe even a small bag of popcorn or chips? Well, none, except when said container self-destructs in your bag before making it through the door unscathed. Allow me to explain. I recently attended the Iron Man movie marathon screening at my local theatre along with my cousin and his friend. Four movies over nearly 12 hours, necessitating a stockpile
of snacks, clearly. After all, we were in this for the long haul. For the most part, we timed our mini-meals for the short breaks we were allotted between films. But when those 15-20 minutes weren’t quite enough, well, why let leftover food and beverages go to waste? Not when I had a rather spacious pocketbook with me. Picture the scene: my pocketbook plus a rather large, rather full fountain soda… oh, and my cousin’s wrapped hamburger thrown in for good measure. You do the math. No sooner were we halfway down the hallway when I felt the faint sensation of liquid trickling out of my bag, down my leg… OH NO, I thought. Of course, trying to remain covert, the first thing I did was crouch down and take a peak inside the pocketbook. It was a river of root beer. No, more like a gulf. I gingerly picked my belongings out of the mess and laid them out, sopping, on the rug in front of our theatre. I then took my bag and carefully walked it over to the nearest garbage and poured the
avalanche of liquid out. Great. Now I had a saturated pocketbook, soaked belongings – and no soda. I gathered everything in my arms and walked down the hall, past two perplexed security guards, into the bathroom, hoping that a mile or so of super-absorbent paper towel would do the trick. No such luck. Thanks to the era of modern conveniences, I was instead met with a wall of automatic hand dryers. Not a paper towel in sight. About 20 minutes later, I made my way into our theatre, having used approximately 12 rolls of toilet paper to absorb as much of the remaining soda as I could. I turned my pocketbook inside out and tossed whatever wrung-out belongings I could salvage back in. All that to save a few bucks on overpriced concessions. And I didn’t even have a beverage to show for it. My cousin’s hamburger, on the other hand, managed to survive the deluge untouched, dry as a bone. Go figure.

Ready, Set, Wear It As a kick-off for this year’s National Safe Boating Week (May 18th24th), the National Safe Boating Council and Canadian Safe Boating Council will host the fourth annual “Ready, Set, Wear It!” Life Jacket World Record Day. This one-day event is part of a year-long effort, the “Wear It!” North American Safe Boating Campaign, which brings together boating safety
partners across the U.S. and Canada to promote safe and responsible boating, including voluntary wearing of life jackets. The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadron – a national organization of boating enthusiast, who provide safe boating courses to the public as a way to make the waterways safer for all – will be sponsoring a local
“Ready, Set, Wear It” event on the same day – Saturday, May 18, 2013, beginning at 11am in the parking lot of Captain Bill’s Seafood Restaurant, 122 Ocean Ave Bay Shore, NY 11706. The public, elected officials, community leaders, local fire departments, and the United States Power Squadron Members are asked to bring their life jacket down to this event to be part of a photo shoot
to bring awareness to safe boating for this upcoming boating season. Boaters from across the U.S.A. will gather on this same day to inflate their own inflatable life jacket or to wear an inherently buoyant life jacket, helping to heighten awareness of different life jacket types and boating safety issues an go for a world’s record along the way. “The importance of
the proper use of life jackets or PFD’s (Personal Flotation Devices) cannot be emphasized enough. Events such as “Ready, Set, Wear It!” call attention to this while having fun doing it. One life saved is more than enough,” said Past Commander and Safety Officer Joe Barrato, Oakdale, NY recently said. The Great South Bay Power Squadron is a unit of the United States Power
Squadrons, a non-profit organization of over 60,000 boating enthusiasts who promote boating education and safety. With the assistance of the sheriffs, the students attempted to peddle gocart-type vehicles through cone mazes beset with challenges. After first completing the maze with clear vision, the students repeated the task while wearing goggles that
simulated driving while impaired at nighttime. With these goggles they also attempted field sobriety tests, such as walking a straight line while counting to nine. “Each one of these cones represents a human being – hitting one means that you have either injured, or worse, killed that individual,” Deputy Sheriff Thomas P. Indence told the
students. “Young people often think that they are invincible, and because of that make irresponsible choices. After today, we hope that getting behind the wheel while intoxicated is not one of those choices.” The program was run at the high school with coordination from the school’s SADD club.

Building Skills Women volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk during the sixth annual National Women Build Week or those who just want to support the cause can get a head start on learning key construction skills and tips. Lowe’s will host two “how-to” clinics for women in preparation of National Women Build Week, an initiative of Habitat’s Women Build program developed in partnership with Lowe’s. Habitat’s Women Build program empowers women to get actively involved with Habitat’s mission to help families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing. “We are looking forward to National Women Build Week and the opportunity to engage more women in our work,” said Diane Burke, interim president of Habitat Suffolk. “We invite women of all construction levels to join us on the build site and/or take the clinics hosted by Lowe’s.” The clinics are open to women who are interested in learning key construction skills and would like to support
National Women Build Week. Attendees will learn home construction basics and have the opportunity to practice new skills. As a complement to the school’s health education program, and in a continued effort to educate students about the dangers of driving while intoxicated, Rocky Point High School hosted a drunken driving simulation program during physical education classes. The S.T.O.P.P.E.D. program, which is offered by the Suffolk County Sherriff’s Department, is geared toward informing high school students about the consequences for drivers under the age of 21 who elect to get behind the wheel of a car while in an impaired state. During the program, members of law enforcement addressed the topics of New York State’s zero tolerance law, Leandra’s law and the

Dressing For Success In an effort to boost morale during recent New York State assessments, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School special education teacher Jacqueline Gandolfo implemented a positive, creative activity with students in AmyJean Castaldo’s third-grade class. Students chose favorite inspirational quotes and
inscribed them on plain T-shirts, which they decorated and wore during testing. “Wearing the shirts helped us to believe in ourselves and be more confident,” said one student. Concurring students added that reading the motivational quotes encouraged them to work even harder and made them feel “less afraid”
about the testing. “Plus, we all look fabulous!” exclaimed another. The children’s shirts emphasized the power of perseverance, selfconfidence and resilience, qualities that they surely displayed post-assessment. “I am so proud of them and all that they do,” said Gandolfo. “They work so hard and are very proud to wear their shirts.”

Holocaust Survivor Visits
For many, images or information regarding the Holocaust are limited to that which can be seen or read in books and magazines. However, for the eighth-grade students at Rocky Point Middle School in the Rocky Point School District, this significant time in the world’s history has taken a more personal face. Holocaust survivor Werner Reich recently visited with the students to share his firsthand experience of this horrific time. “Today’s program is quite powerful,” Principal Dr. Scott O’Brien told the students. “You have been Security, 2nd Place Game learning or are just starting Design and Programming to study the Holocaust in Sander (Yongqi) Zhu – 3rd Place Intro to Tech Concepts, 5th Place Computer Problem Solving
your social studies classes, and today’s assembly will cover the topic in a deep way that I’m sure will have a profound impact on how you view this time in history.” During the program, which was comprised of a PowerPoint of still photographs, quotes and sayings, Mr. Reich spoke to the students about the history of the Holocaust, what he encountered while living in a concentration camp, and how his experiences changed him forever. “What I want is for these students to have the chance to live in a better world than I did when I was younger,” stated Mr. Reich,
who has been sharing his story with audiences for more than 15 years. The heartbreaking personal stories he shared of how he traveled from concentration camp to concentration camp and the poor and unsanitary conditions in which they were forced to live brought this historical time to life for the students. Throughout his talk, Mr. Reich equated the Holocaust to current events as he drove home his overarching message – bad things happen because “the good people did nothing” – a message meant to inspire the students to always stand up for what they feel is right.

Springing Into Action Students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School celebrated Earth Day in many special ways this year. On April 19th, Melissa Martin’s kindergarten class invited parents and relatives to partake in a pre-Earth Day classroom celebration. The children worked together on activities which included tie-dying T-shirts, creating entries for a class “ecology” book, a nature walk of the beautiful on-campus trails, the decoration of earth window-clings and even
a Smart Board exercise of virtual recycling. The students also participated in the design and creation of persuasive Earth Day posters, encouraging others to be more conscious of their impact on the environment. Incorporating recently learned persuasive writing techniques, the posters focused on topics such as pollution, litter, recycling and the importance of “doing your part” to help the earth. On Earth Day, April 22nd, Kristen Poulos and Karen
Stamatopoulos organized a unique earth-themed event in which students made “dirt pudding.” Complete with gummy worms, the students meticulously followed recipe instructions that turned Oreos, chocolate pudding and whipped cream into a decadent dessert resembling dirt. The activity served as a kick-off to the week’s discussions about ways to make the earth a cleaner and happier place.

High Performers Named Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students Danielle Grier, Leah Neiman, Alberto Rescia and Kent Ueno were recently notified that their preliminary scores on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test met the requirements needed to enter the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students’
scores rank them among the top 50,000 highest performers with a selection index of 203 or higher. More than 1.5 million students participated. Of the 50,000 high scorers nationwide, approximately 16,000 will be named National Merit Program Semifinalists and 34,000 will be Commended Students. The district will be notified

The museum will be open between Friday, May 24th through Monday, May 27th between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. A gate donation will be requested of $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and veterans and $5 for children. Flight experiences will be available on a legendary Flying Fortress B-17 World War II bomber throughout the weekend as well as a classic Waco biplane, T-6 Texan and C-47 Airborne paratrooper plane. Flight experience fees are posted at the museum.

A World War II maritime patrol bomber similar to those that once hunted Nazi U-boats outside New York Harbor is taking to the air this Memorial Day weekend at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport thanks to the efforts of Bristal Assisted Living. The aircraft will be on display for the purpose of offering a tribute to all US Navy personnel and the Merchant Mariners who sailed in dangerous waters during World War II. Dubbed, the “PBY Catalina,” the “Cat” operated along the Long Island coast line during World War II, searching for Nazi U-boats trying to torpedo Allied freighters and tankers. It served as the “eyes” of the American fleet when radar was in its infancy, and it was instrumental in securing victory over Japanese aircraft carriers in the Pacific and German battleships in the North Atlantic by spotting them lurking in waters below. It also rescued thousands of downed pilots as its seaplane hull enabled it to land and take off from the ocean. “We are honored to be able to sponsor the arrival of this aircraft as it reflects the courage and valor of not just our naval aviators but all those who went into harm’s way on behalf of freedom,” stated Jan Burman, President of Bristal Assisted

Is Sandy Bringing Jellyfish? By: Tyler Cianciulli Some consider jellyfish to be stinging nightmares, but it is proving to be evident that, through their seemingly mindless movement, jellies actually help the ecosystem. With every pulsating contraction of a jellyfish’s umbrella, a stew of marine matter is propelled, therefore creating a turbulent environment that is rich in nutrients. In simpler terms, a jelly brings fertile water from the depths through its movement. This biogenic mixing leads to a plankton boom, which results in a surge of baitfish and ultimately works up the food chain to create a
healthy, thriving ecosystem. Compounded with this effect, a jellyfish also helps to maintain a healthy population of organisms by both eating some and protecting others. In addition, jellyfish are a key food source for many animals. One of these, the sea turtle, relies on jellies for its daily meal. They are quite abundant here on Long Island, but like with any other animal, jellyfish are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of predators and prey. In the Long Island Sound, one of the most diverse bar-built estuaries on the east coast of the United States of America, jellyfish serve an alternate purpose. This 650 million
year-old creature picks up the slack of eelgrass. During the years in which eelgrass is on a down-swing, many marine birds will peck at the fleshy, gooey umbrella of these gelatinous floating invertebrates. Tuna, sharks and even other jellyfish partake in grazing upon these small cnidarians. When a jellyfish dies unconsumed, it acts as a host for even more life. Funguses, bacteria and other decomposers break down and feast upon the deceased organism. It can be said that the jellyfish is a “jack-of-all-trades” kind of animal that isn’t just a monster, but a helpful organism that is crucial to the survival of many of Long Island’s creatures.
