File Under: Never Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan We’ve all done it. Admit it. You’ve walked into a movie theatre or arena of some sort – one with “No Outside Food Or Drink Permitted” signs clearly plastered on every entrance – smuggling some type of snack in a well-concealed pocket, a purse, under your hat…whatever. Why should you pay an exorbitant price for refreshments when you can surely find something for far less at a local convenience store, right? It’s a great idea, in theory. What’s the harm in bringing a bottle of water, a candy bar, maybe even a small bag of popcorn or chips? Well, none, except when said container self-destructs in your bag before making it through the door unscathed. Allow me to explain. I recently attended the Iron Man movie marathon screening at my local theatre along with my cousin and his friend. Four movies over nearly 12 hours, necessitating a stockpile
of snacks, clearly. After all, we were in this for the long haul. For the most part, we timed our mini-meals for the short breaks we were allotted between films. But when those 15-20 minutes weren’t quite enough, well, why let leftover food and beverages go to waste? Not when I had a rather spacious pocketbook with me. Picture the scene: my pocketbook plus a rather large, rather full fountain soda… oh, and my cousin’s wrapped hamburger thrown in for good measure. You do the math. No sooner were we halfway down the hallway when I felt the faint sensation of liquid trickling out of my bag, down my leg… OH NO, I thought. Of course, trying to remain covert, the first thing I did was crouch down and take a peak inside the pocketbook. It was a river of root beer. No, more like a gulf. I gingerly picked my belongings out of the mess and laid them out, sopping, on the rug in front of our theatre. I then took my bag and carefully walked it over to the nearest garbage and poured the
avalanche of liquid out. Great. Now I had a saturated pocketbook, soaked belongings – and no soda. I gathered everything in my arms and walked down the hall, past two perplexed security guards, into the bathroom, hoping that a mile or so of super-absorbent paper towel would do the trick. No such luck. Thanks to the era of modern conveniences, I was instead met with a wall of automatic hand dryers. Not a paper towel in sight. About 20 minutes later, I made my way into our theatre, having used approximately 12 rolls of toilet paper to absorb as much of the remaining soda as I could. I turned my pocketbook inside out and tossed whatever wrung-out belongings I could salvage back in. All that to save a few bucks on overpriced concessions. And I didn’t even have a beverage to show for it. My cousin’s hamburger, on the other hand, managed to survive the deluge untouched, dry as a bone. Go figure.

The group joined four other student ensembles selected from around the country to play in the event at the Chicago Symphony Hall. During their trip the students participated in a clinic with Colonel Arnold Gabriel, former Director of the United States Air Force Band, to learn more about their craft.

High school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties with dreams of becoming actors, dancers, playwrights, painters, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers, singers or lighting designers are encouraged to audition for the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), consistently voted Bethpage Best Arts School since 2011. Part of the public school system, LIHSA is conveniently located at a state-of-the-art facility in Syosset where students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to attend either a half- or full-day program. Students receive professional-level training in art, dance, drama, theatre technology, instrumental or vocal music, musical theatre, film or playwriting each day as a supplement to their regular course of study. Students can compose and create original works in the school’s cutting-edge Digital Media and Production Lab. Teens who exercise the half-day option spend part of the day at LIHSA and the remainder of their time in their home district completing academic requirements. Students who elect the full-day option complete all requirements for obtaining their Regents or Advanced Regents diploma at LIHSA. A broad spectrum of opportunities is available to students interested in studying the arts. A staff consisting of teachers and practicing professional artists prepares the students for auditions, helps with portfolio selections and steers students toward specialized awards and honors. More than 98 percent of the graduates go on to colleges or conservatories. Eighty-three graduates from the class of 2012 collectively earned more than $6.5 million in scholarships and grants, and are now attending some of the most prestigious schools in the country. She asked, “What do you look for when hiring someone?” Dr. Goldstein, who has an animated personality yet projects professionalism, responded, “First, you need to like kids.” He added, “And, you have to remember that when you work with children, you are really treating two people at the same time, the child, and the parent.” “We are a team,” said Goldstein. “The parents, my assistants, and me; we work together.” He expects that members of his staff be able to multi-task, be computer literate, have experience working with children, and be a social person. “Let’s face it,” he said, “my responsibility is to teach you so you can learn and you will be putting your hands in someone’s mouth. You have to like what you will be doing every day.” Dr. Goldstein is very familiar with the

From The Bridge To The Beach Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with Autism on Long Island, will be the recipient of a very special fundraising effort by two St. John’s University seniors, an effort that will also serve to bring about more awareness of Autism and other developmental disabilities. Nathan
Holmes and John Kenny will hit the pavement on May 28th at the Brooklyn Bridge and will finish up their walking journey across Long Island on June 4th at Montauk Point. “These students have decided to celebrate the milestone of their own graduation by taking on a journey to better the lives of others. It’s really wonderful to see the
dedication and generosity that Nathan and John have shown. We are truly honored that John and Nathan have chosen to support DDI, and to also bring about greater awareness of disability,” stated John Lessard, Executive Director of DDI. The 128-mile walk will take the students eight days to complete, averaging 17.5 miles per day. Stops
along the way will include multiple DDI sites as well as St. John’s University. Along with fellow classmates from St. John’s, students will be staying with DDI host families throughout their journey. Strength for Life is a grassroots nonprofit providing FREE exercise classes and wellness retreats for cancer patients/survivors on Long Island. On April 17th at the Selden Campus and April 18th at the Brentwood Campus from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. spin instructors held classes every hour to benefit Strength for Life. The Founders of Strength for Life, graduates of the Fitness Specialist Program at SCCC Ammerman Campus, are blessed to be chosen as the beneficiary of this 2013 event. The Department of Physical Education on each campus organized the event and did an outstanding job of promotion to support the Strength for Life organization and the programs offered at NO COST to cancer survivors. Strength for Life just celebrated its 9th Wellness Retreat at the Hyatt Windwatch hosting 20 survivors to a full day of healing complementary therapies, incredible guest speakers an overnight stay, meals and a hike on the last day. The $4500 raised by SCCC will sponsor the 10th Wellness Retreat in September 2013. Classes are held in East Meadow; Seaford; Bay Shore; Stony Brook and Port Jefferson and continue to add locations with interested participants. Strength for Life will speak at cancer support groups extolling the benefits of exercise during treatment and in recovery. Since the 2010 American College of Sports Medicine revised guidelines there are numerous studies on the benefits of adding exercise to the treatment plan. Is Sandy Bringing Jellyfish? By: Tyler Cianciulli Some consider jellyfish to be stinging nightmares, but it is proving to be evident that, through their seemingly mindless movement, jellies actually help the ecosystem. With every pulsating contraction of a jellyfish’s umbrella, a stew of marine matter is propelled, therefore creating a turbulent environment that is rich in nutrients. In simpler terms, a jelly brings fertile water from the depths through its movement. This biogenic mixing leads to a plankton boom, which results in a surge of baitfish and ultimately works up the food chain to create a
healthy, thriving ecosystem. Compounded with this effect, a jellyfish also helps to maintain a healthy population of organisms by both eating some and protecting others. In addition, jellyfish are a key food source for many animals. One of these, the sea turtle, relies on jellies for its daily meal. They are quite abundant here on Long Island, but like with any other animal, jellyfish are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of predators and prey. In the Long Island Sound, one of the most diverse bar-built estuaries on the east coast of the United States of America, jellyfish serve an alternate purpose. This 650 million
year-old creature picks up the slack of eelgrass. During the years in which eelgrass is on a down-swing, many marine birds will peck at the fleshy, gooey umbrella of these gelatinous floating invertebrates. Tuna, sharks and even other jellyfish partake in grazing upon these small cnidarians. When a jellyfish dies unconsumed, it acts as a host for even more life. Funguses, bacteria and other decomposers break down and feast upon the deceased organism. It can be said that the jellyfish is a “jack-of-all-trades” kind of animal that isn’t just a monster, but a helpful organism that is crucial to the survival of many of Long Island’s creatures.
