Condensing The Collections By: Jamie Lynn Ryan How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them? And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of. Personally, I will never discard my CD collection. In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate
my massive music collection. Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together. I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really. I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real
purpose – but they’re mine. They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb. Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes. As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

Enforcement Section. He holds the record for the highest number of DWI arrests in all of Suffolk County for the year 2012, and made a quarter of the total number of DWI arrests made by Suffolk’s deputies. The Section made an impressive 416 DWI arrests in 2012 while patrolling the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway, and was also honored by M.A.D.D. during today’s ceremony. Suffolk Sheriff Vincent DeMarco offered praise to all the deputies for their excellent work in

Six vital members of the Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center represent three of the mother/daughter teams who have collectively contributed 141 years of service in volunteer work. A volunteer awards luncheon that will honor these women and other dedicated volunteers will be held at Captain Bill’s Bayview House on April 8th. Dignitaries, board members, hospital leadership and guests will join Guild members
to recognize outstanding service achievements. The Guilds are groups of individuals who work diligently for the benefit of the medical center. These volunteers organize community activities, staff the hospital gift shop, hold annual fund- raising events and operate an offsite thrift shop to support Good Samaritan. In 2012, the Guilds raised more than $268,000, with more than 40,000 hours of service donated as well. Guild Central Council
President and Past President Vera Meinhold and her mother, Millie Mascari, joined the Lindenhurst/North Babylon Guilds in 1975. They have been instrumental in bringing valued volunteers to help raise funds to support hospital services. Rose Cappiello and her daughter, Marie Nicharico, and Ellen Fornaro and her daughter, Eileen Fornaro help to sustain the Hospital Guild Thrift Shop in Babylon since 1986.

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is pleased to announce that the State Cup will kick off this spring on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. 711 teams from the East End of Long Island to north of Albany have entered the State Cup and are vying to become state champions. “We are looking forward to wonderful competition, hopefully to be played in abundant sunshine this spring,” commented State Cup Chairperson Barbara Rodriguez, an ENYYSA Hall of Famer. As the name implies, the State Open Cup (US Youth Soccer / ENY State Championship) is open to all teams. 283 squads will be playing in this competition primarily for Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 teams. Only State Open Cup champs go on to play in the Regionals with those winners going to the Nationals in the National Championship Series.

Bringing The Sunshine
Mohammed Naeem could easily be known as Mr. Sunshine. As Leader of the Stony Brook University chapter of Project Sunshine, that’s his mission: to bring sunshine into the lives of children who are hospitalized at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital. A senior majoring in health science with a concentration in public health at Stony Brook, Naeem and his fellow student members of the local Project Sunshine chapter visit the pediatric inpatient unit at Stony Brook Children’s each Wednesday afternoon, where they engage the children in activities to help them cope with the stress of being hospitalized. Their efforts help bring a sense of normalcy to the lives of children and their families. “The Stony Brook students bring fun activities each week for the kids,” said Paulette T. Walter, MA, CCLS, Certified Child Life Specialist at Stony Brook Children’s. “We work closely with them to integrate their activities and enthusiasm with our staff and patients. The Stony Brook chapter has also been very active in fundraising and bringing special events to us.” Naeem, 22, of Flushing, Queens, said he started the Stony Brook chapter of Project Sunshine in 2012 after he read a book in which the founder of Project Sunshine was interviewed. Intrigued, he searched the internet,
found out there was no chapter at Stony Brook, and decided to start one. Now there are 16 students in the chapter, with plans to expand to 20 next year. “For our volunteers, it provides an experience that allows them to understand the day-to-day experience of patients,” Naeem said. “It helps us understand that the lives we lead are only as valuable as the lives we touch. “Personally, the children I have worked with have truly inspired me to wake up every morning with a purpose,” he said. “Simply seeing the courage and determination they possess on a daily basis has instilled me with a passion to make use of my talents for the goodness of others. “I enjoy creating something and then seeing the impact,” Naeem added. “It just makes me happy. That’s all it really is.” A non-profit organization based in New York, Project Sunshine has more than 10,000 volunteers serving in 150 major cities across the United States, as well as Canada, China, Israel, Kenya and Puerto Rico. The organization offers recreational (arts), educational (tutoring and mentoring) and social services (HIV and nutritional counseling) to more than 60,000 children facing medical challenges. “Our volunteers are students, working professionals, artists, athletes and people of all ages and backgrounds who want to bring sunshine into the lives of children in
need,” said Kate Amanna, MPA, Program Manager for Project Sunshine. “Volunteers spend time with children, create gifts to send to hospitalized children, and participate in hospital improvement projects to brighten the hospital’s surroundings.” “This is a tremendous service to our patients and it demonstrates great care and commitment by the Stony Brook students who participate,” said Margaret M. McGovern, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s. On a recent visit during Child Life Month in March, the Stony Brook students were filmed as part of a video production by Project Sunshine to promote its spring benefit gala on May 2 and to help raise awareness about the organization. The students wore bright yellow Project Sunshine shirts and donned chef’s hats while helping children create yogurt parfaits at the “Chef’s Table.” The activity provided the opportunity to educate the children about nutritional facts, recipes and healthier eating habits. “We feel very fortunate to have Project Sunshine on our team to help make the children’s hospital stays less stressful,” Walter said. “They truly bring rays of sunshine to our children and their families.”

on this experience and using the trip as a mini service learning project.” Previous spring break trips for SJC students have included helping to build a day care center and playground in Nicaragua, building homes in Georgetown, South Carolina and rebuilding homes that were destroyed by tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri.

Sunrise Toyota announced today that it will be sponsoring A Night of Song and Dance at The Gateway Playhouse on Sunday, April 28th. The benefit event will consist of a buffet and silent auction at 5 p.m., followed by a dance performance at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go to a local Long Island family in need. Deb Cordaro’s on-going battle with cancer has been causing financial stress for her and her family of Ridge. When Jimmy Berg,
owner of Sunrise Toyota heard of the Cordaro’s situation, he immediately wanted to help the family. In addition to sponsoring the benefit, Berg agreed to donate a loaner vehicle from Sunrise Toyota, which was picked up Saturday the 23rd, so the family could take advantage of a timeshare they received for this week’s Spring Break in Florida. While the family is on their “Sunrise Voyage,” Berg is also donating a
portion of every vehicle sold at Sunrise Toyota to the family to help offset the cost of medical treatment. The Cordaro’s “Sunrise Voyage” will be featured on Sunrise Toyota’s Facebook page, so everyone can experience the voyage. Another Successful Season On Friday, March 22nd the St. Joseph’s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), Clinic Division (6-7 year olds), Basketball All-Star game was played at Ronkonkoma Middle School, in Ronkonkoma. The gym was filled with excited parents, siblings, coaches and grandparents who came to support their ‘little’ future stars. An AllStar game usually signals the end of a sports season, but at St. Joe’s it was the annual Awards ‘Banquet’, on March 26th, that brought everyone back together one more time, to bring an official ending to the 2013 season. The All-Star game was just plain fun for everyone who played, coached, or just watched and cheered their little guys and girls on. One of the most exciting moments of the night came when the youngsters were presented with their official ‘AllStar’ jerseys. While the score was basically less important than watching
the teams enjoy the experience, it was fun to see the blue and gold teams play on a regulation court, with 10 foot baskets, for the first time. Both teams and their coaches gathered at the conclusion of the game for a memorable AllStar group photo. The March 26th Awards ‘banquet’ provided the youngsters with the opportunity to meet with their teammates, coaches and opponents for the last time this season, along with their parents. Before the impressive trophies were presented, hot dogs, hero’s, salads, beverages and dessert were enjoyed by this year’s Clinic Division participants. As the season comes to an end parents took the time to recognize the people whose efforts and sacrifices made it all possible. Certainly the volunteer coaches are to be congratulated for their efforts to teach basketball skills, allow the youngsters to make new friends, and
emphasize the importance of ‘sportsmanship’. But, if it weren’t for the CYO Chairman and coordinators, none of this would be possible. Great thanks to Henry Melchiona, Chairman; Cathy Stack, ViceChairperson; Nick Vicale, Treasurer and Basketball Coordinator; Gene Stack, Sports Coordinator; and VIV (Very Important Volunteer) Tom Melchiona. Because of these wonderful, thoughtful and generous CYO Sports directors, hundreds of children had the opportunity to enjoy this latest basketball season. One grandparent, and former college basketball coach, was heard to say, “This organization is an example of what ‘little league’ sports are supposed to be. Thank You to all of the volunteers who made this CYO Basketball season so enjoyable. We can’t wait ‘til next season!”

Visit With Vet
Mr. John Delio, Principal of Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, along with several of his fifth grade students visited The Long Island Veterans’ Home in Stony Brook on February 13th. Delio had arranged to visit Fredrick Kraics, a WWII veteran and a 1932 graduate of the Ronkonkoma School, now known as the Edith L. Slocum Elementary School! Students eagerly interviewed Mr. Kraics, who described his early life in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, as well as growing up in Ronkonkoma. “When my family moved to Ronkonkoma I was only 2 years old, and this area was
all farmland. As I grew up I would help on the farm, completing chores before going off to school. “ Those chores included milking cows, collecting chicken eggs and feeding the chickens before walking to school. Mr. Kraics revealed that his school included students in grades K-8, and that one of his teachers was Edith L. Slocum! According to Mr. Kraics “Miss Slocum never married, and had another home in upstate New York. We worked on our handwriting and mathematics very much. She was very dedicated, and structured, and would do anything to help her students.” Mr. Kraics said
that the original school had only two classrooms, and that there were very few students. He remembered graduating from the eighth grade with only 5 other students. Mr. Kraics served on the front lines during WWII for four years. As a young man he enjoyed baseball and race-walking. He and Mrs. Kraics, who recently passed away, were married for 70 years, and raised two boys. Mr. Delio said “It was a great pleasure, and learning experience, for us to speak to Mr. Kraics and learn about life in this ‘Slocum’ community 80 years ago.” Photo by: Joseph Maniaci
C-QUEST STUDENTS LEARN SPANISH - Fifth graders from Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School’s C-Quest program received a visit from members of Connetquot High School’s National Foreign Language Honor Society. The high school students used multi-media materials as they worked with the fifth graders to enrich their understanding of the culture, geography and worldwide use of the Spanish language. Night Of Friendship
On Wednesday evening, February 6th, Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School community came together to welcome families from the neighboring Idle Hour community for a night of friendship, and relaxation. Sycamore Principle Stuart Pollak said that this night of good food, friendship and entertainment “… is another example of the care and warmth of our PTA members and staff.” The invited guests were families that suffered great loss as a result of the recent Sandy Hurricane. Idle Hour Elementary School Principal Mrs. Denise
Toscano was also on hand to welcome the families. Sycamore PTA members prepared a variety of tasty dishes, and beverages, as well dessert. Parent & staff volunteers served the guests during the evening meal, and students provided upbeat entertainment after dinner, and prior to dessert being served. Mrs. Guiney’s combined Sycamore-Idle Hour student-band added to the festive atmosphere, as did Ms. White’s talented singers. Sycamore’s own talented Magician, Speech Therapist Mr. Wayne Haarhaus, brought the youngsters, and their
parents, to their feet in appreciation for his fabulous ‘feats of illusion’. Mr. Pollak and Mrs. Toscano thanked their Idle Hour friends for attending this ‘Night of Friendship’, and the wonderful parents and students of the Sycamore community for making the event so enjoyable. PARP KICKOFF - Students from Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently kicked off their annual Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program with an exciting physical activity event entitled Exercise Your Mind with Reading. The school welcomed a Zumba instructor to help launch and celebrate this year’s PARP program. The dance-based fitness craze had students dancing and singing as they exercised. PAT’S & SENIORS - Kindergarten students from Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with senior citizens at the nearby assisted living facility. In addition to distributing colorful Shamrocks the students had made in class, they spent the day singing songs, playing Bingo and creating arts and crafts projects with their happy hosts. Students performed POSTER CONTEST WINNER - Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma several St. Patrick’s Day themed songs including I’m A Little Leprechaun and March Middle School recently announced the winners of a poster contest supporting New as the residents cheered them on. York State’s newly enacted Dignity for All Students Act. The poster contest participants submitted creative entries that reflect the goals of the law also known as the Dignity Act, which seeks to provide public elementary and secondary students with a safe school environment free from discrimination.

Easing The Burden
The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to Ease The Burden And Find The Cure. Founded more than 51 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease. The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease. “Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted
and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure.” More research is needed, she said. Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement,
difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors. While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old, it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease. April 11th marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease now named for him. Philip Maniaci, a resident of Bohemia, and his wife Jennifer, recently traveled to Mayport, Florida, for a combination reunion, and farewell. The couple had been invited to attend the elaborate March 22nd Decommissioning ceremony of the warship USS Klakring , upon which he served from 1994-1998. The ceremony brought back many of Maniaci’s crewmates, and the prior night’s reunion brought back memories of good friends, and visits to exotic ports of call. The USS Klakring (FFG42) was an Oliver Perry class frigate commissioned in 1983, and named after Rear Admiral Thomas B. Klakring. Over its 29 years of service, the Klakring completed 22 deployments and traveled more than 3.2 million miles worldwide. Those deployments were to the Middle East, South America, Europe and Africa. Captain Paul Flood,
Commander of Destroyer Squadron 14, proudly addressed the assembled veterans, along with family and friends of the current crew which stood at attention ‘at the rails’. “From maritime patrols in the Persian Gulf, antipiracy operations off the coast of Africa, to counternarcotics patrols in the Caribbean Sea, Klakring has always performed exceptionally.” Commander Bertram Hodge, Klakring’s last captain, spoke about the hard work of the crew, and how these men would carry on the Klakring’s traditions to the fleet. The ceremony concluded with the current crew of the Klakring departing the ship. Once the last sailor left the ship, USS Klakring was officially decommissioned. While this proud and powerful ship will no longer sail the seas, it’s former officers and crew will never forget the time they spent
together aboard the ship that provided ‘Freedom Through Vigilance’. Maniaci completed his service aboard the Klakring in 1998 with the rank of Operations Specialist-2nd Class. He is currently Vice President of Operations for World Customs Brokerage, Inc.

National Walking Day In celebration of National Walking Day, on Wednesday, April 3rd, the American Heart Association is encouraging Americans to get fit and have fun by launching Show Us Your Moves. The month-long Instagram promotion encourages consumers to submit photos of their
favorite fun physical activity – dancing, roller skating, walking with friends, gardening – you name it! Selected photos will be featured each week on www.heart.org and various American Heart Association social media pages. By sharing pictures of their physical activity on Instagram with the hashtag

Woman Of Distinction
Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore invited Helen Hethy Mulvihill to his district office to recognize her as Woman of Distinction 2013 in the Fourth Legislative District. Proud family members and friends also attended to show their support. For nearly thirty years, Ms. Mulvihill has been found each Saturday at the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society. Museum visitors benefit from the wealth of information she provides about the town’s rich history. “Ms. Mulvihill, the daughter of a respected
real estate agent, loves her community. She lives on a local farm owned by her family for over 150 years,” stated Legislator Muratore. “As a teacher in the Sachem School District, she was known by her students as a “tough cookie.” Despite this, Helen has developed solid relationships with many students throughout the years.” Additionally, Helen serves as President of the Lake Ronkonkoma Cemetery, Director of the Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead, and volunteers with the Town of Brookhaven’s Historian
Barbara Russell. She also attends Bible study at Lake Ronkonkoma Methodist Church. However, Helen’s most important role is that of a loving mother and grandmother. “Her knowledge of the area and ability to communicate is apparent to all who meet her, and will help preserve the history of Lake Ronkonkoma for generations to come. She has touched the lives of many, and for this reason, I take great pleasure in presenting this proclamation to Helen Hethy Mulvihill,” concluded Muratore.
COLLECTING HUGS - Pictured are some of the stuffed animals collected for the HUGS program at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson by children at the Charles E. Walters Elementary School in Yaphank. Student Zachary Iannotta, now at Longwood Junior High School, began collecting stuffed animals for HUGS in the second grade along with teacher Lenore Bence, and has continued his collections each year since then. HUGS distributes stuffed animals to help comfort children and elderly patients awaiting treatment at the Hospital’s Emergency Room, in its Ambulatory and Inpatient Surgical Pavilion, in the laboratory and other areas.

Sayville Academic Center (SAC) students learned about proper nutrition thanks to a visit from Jillian the Giraffe, who loves to eat veggies and fruit. The 7-foot-tall Jillian joined the kids in the school cafeteria, shaking paws,
and distributing packages of reduced fat Cheez-it crackers and information on healthy eating. Provided by Whitsons School Nutrition, the company that services the Eastern Suffolk BOCES’ SAC facility, the animal
characters are a fun way to promote eating right to school students aged 5 to 11. The following week, Murray the Monkey visited the East Islip School District.

On April 20th, The Long Island Game Farm is hosting Green At The Game Farm, a special Earth Day event that will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children will learn to make their own rain sticks as they celebrate this very special planet that everyone
lives on. Older children (and younger children, with a parent’s help) will also participate in a special Earth Day scavenger hunt as they travel throughout the Game Farm looking for clues. The event is free to children under 12, with paid admission. “This is a fun and educational event that children can take part in to celebrate Earth Day,” said Melinda Novak, Vice President/Co-Owner, Long

Making Music
Ms. Lauren Alber is one of many innovative music teachers at Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School, in Ronkonkoma. Recently, Ms. Alber introduced a unit which would allow her students to create their own songs, using an innovative software program called Jam Studio. Ms. Albert’s 5th grade students had been working in the computer lab, creating their own songs, and generating personal CD’s. Ms. Alber said “They have the opportunity to create any style of song they
like, with instruments and chords of their choosing. Upon completing their work, students use the internet to email the songs to their proud parents.” During the month of March, which is Music in Our School’s Month, Ms. Alber will play one student’s composition each morning, with the daily announcements, “… so the whole school can hear their masterpieces!” Cherokee Elementary School Principal Mrs. Bridgette Wilson congratulated Ms. Alber and her students, for the
With the 2013 Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball season coming to an end, the annual AllStar game was held on Friday, March 22nd. Held at the Ronkonkoma Middle School in Ronkonkoma, 20 youngsters were selected for the two teams which would compete for the first time on a regulation basketball court, with 10 foot high baskets. This ‘clinic’ division is used to familiarize the youngsters with the basics of the game, learning basketball skills on a smaller court, with 8’ high baskets. The youngsters selected to play in this All-Star game are 6 and 7 years old and were chosen by the coaches from the 20 teams that competed on either Saturdays or Sundays at the St. Joseph’s School
in Ronkonkoma. The youngsters were excited to receive their official ‘All-Star’ shirts before the game, and to play in front of so man y ‘fans’! Mom’s, dads, siblings, friends and plenty of grandparents filled the stands for the contest and cheered the two teams as they played a close game which ended in a 12-10 win for the ‘gold’ All-Stars. Coaches Paul Rom (gold) and Mike Krall (blue) were pleased with their players’ efforts, and thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie between the youngsters on both teams. The game began with player introductions, a dedication by CYO league coordinator Henry Melchiona to military veterans in attendance, and ended with the players
and coaches shaking hands and congratulating one another. North Shore-LIJ Huntington Hospital recently recognized March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with its first ever Go Blue Day on Friday, March 15th. As part of the day-long spirited event, hospital staff wore blue in support of colorectal cancer awareness and provided patients with valuable information regarding early detection screenings and various treatment options that are available today. Everyone who participated was treated to free ice cream at the hospital’s café, which was packaged in blue to commemorate the day. Huntington Hospital’s “Go Blue Day” was introduced and spearheaded by Huntington Hospital’s newly appointed Director of Surgical Services and Director of colorectal Surgery David E. Rivadeneira, MD, FACS, FASCRS, an accomplished colorectal surgeon with
board-certification in general surgery as well as colon and rectal surgery. “Statistics show that colon and rectal cancers are now the second most common diagnosed cancer in men and women in the United States today,” said Dr. Rivadeneira. “While our ‘Go Blue Day’ focused on drawing more attention toward the prevalence and seriousness of colorectal cancers, it also celebrated the new hope for more remissions and cures with quicker recovery thanks to today’s colorectal cancer screenings and minimally invasive colorectal procedures including laparoscopic and robotic surgical procedures.” “Dr. Rivadeneira is a top-flight surgeon who is a strong compliment to Huntington Hospital and our region, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise within the areas of colorectal cancer treatment” said Kevin

(NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study— commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan
Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental disease,”
Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s wellbeing,” said Dr. Bellows.
