n Saturday, the Town held another successful Annual Earth Day Celebration at Gillette Park in Sayville, with thousands of residents participating in the day-long event. Islip elected officials celebrated the 70th birthday of Keep Islip Clean founder Pamela Raymond, awarded several Recycling Poster Contest winners from area schools, and helped promote the dozens of earth-friendly displays and vendor booths.

Strength for Life is a grassroots nonprofit providing FREE exercise classes and wellness retreats for cancer patients/survivors on Long Island. On April 17th at the Selden Campus and April 18th at the Brentwood Campus from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. spin instructors held classes every hour to benefit Strength for Life. The Founders of Strength for Life, graduates of the Fitness Specialist Program at SCCC Ammerman Campus, are blessed to be chosen as the beneficiary of this 2013 event. The Department of Physical Education on each campus organized the event and did an outstanding job of promotion to support the Strength for Life organization and the programs offered at NO COST to cancer survivors. Strength for Life just celebrated its 9th Wellness Retreat at the Hyatt Windwatch hosting

20 survivors to a full day of healing complementary therapies, incredible guest speakers an overnight stay, meals and a hike on the last day. The $4500 raised by SCCC will sponsor the 10th Wellness Retreat in September 2013. Classes are held in East Meadow; Seaford; Bay Shore; Stony Brook and Port Jefferson and continue to add locations with interested participants. Strength for Life will speak at cancer support groups extolling the benefits of exercise during treatment and in recovery. Since the 2010 American College of Sports Medicine revised guidelines there are numerous studies on the benefits of adding exercise to the treatment plan. CULTURE COMES TO SLOCUM - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students were recently visited by Native American historians Robert Vetter and Jamie Reason. The duo described what life was like for Native Americans living on the Great Plains and brought along toys which children of the Plains used to play. The students went inside a full-sized tipi and were also able to wear some of the clothing traditionally worn by Native Americans, including Buffalo skin outerwear and beads.

As a kick-off for this year’s National Safe Boating Week (May 18th24th), the National Safe Boating Council and Canadian Safe Boating Council will host the fourth annual “Ready, Set, Wear It!” Life Jacket World Record Day. This one-day event is part of a year-long effort, the “Wear It!” North American Safe Boating Campaign, which brings together boating safety partners across the U.S. and Canada to promote safe and responsible boating, including voluntary wearing of life jackets. Art At The Heart
“We had been studying the circulatory system,” explained Sayville High School Biology teacher Cindy Giannico; however, she was still quite surprised when one of her tenthgrade students produced an accurate drawing of the human heart. While working with Mr. Jason Ferremi, who coteaches the Biology class, Skye Fasulo spontaneously pulled out a sheet of paper and drew the human heart as a demonstration of her
own understanding of the organ. The drawing was so good it was used for the class as a study guide. “This tenth-grade Biology student is not only an A student,” Mrs. Giannico continued with amazement, “but she does A+ artwork as well. I loved it so much, I asked if she could paint it on my classroom wall!” As requested, Skye Fasulo painted a colorful rendering of the human heart on the wall in Mrs.
Ciannico’s classroom. “What was so awesome,” the Biology teacher exclaimed, “was that she now can name every part of the heart and all the arteries and veins that enter and exit it!” Skye, who loves art, is currently taking art classes, and will be enrolled in AP art next year. Although she is still unsure how she will use her artistic talent in the future, she does plan on continuing with drawing and painting.

Living with a disability takes a quiet strength every moment of every day. So, it is even more heartwarming to see this courage transferred to a spectator sport where such enormous efforts rally the cheers and applause of inspired onlookers - all this happened for Sayville athletes at the recent Special Olympics held in Commack. Focusing on the abilities of our student athletes, a group of Sayville High School students who are members of Athletes Helping Others (AHO) club attended the Special Olympics track

A Walk In Finance Park “Going on the Finance Park field trip made me realize that in order to stay out of debt you must plan your budget wisely,” stated Sayville High School Senior Kiki Bustamante. This was the general consensus from the Sayville students in both the Wall Street: Business and Investments class (taught by Mr. Chad Cross) and the Accounting class (taught by Mr. Michael Pace) who joined their teachers and parent chaperones one day on a memorable field trip to JA Finance Park Simulation, in Hauppauge. During this month-long economics education program offered by JA Associates which is open to Long Island high schools, students who have been studying business in class get a fresh perspective outside the classroom. According to the JA Associates website, this program introduces students to “personal financial planning and career exploration. It is designed to be taught to high school students by classroom teachers. At the culmination of this program, students visit JA Finance Park to put into practice what they’ve learned about economic options and the principles of budgeting. Assisted by their teachers and a staff of trained volunteers, they have the opportunity to actually develop and commit to a personal budget.” Financial concepts that were explored include Banking, Budgets, Buying, Careers, Choices, Consumers, Credit, Debt, Exchange, Expenses, Income, Interest rates, Investments, Money, Opportunity costs, Saving,

During the simulation, the students employed various skills that had them analyzing the “life situation,” as provided by the Finance Park simulation program, and applying this “information” while determining their budgets. The students learned how cause and effect impact their decision making. They used critical thinking, computation, and data collection in the process. They were required to fill out forms, follow directions, graph, use interpersonal communication skills like listening,
negotiating, and observing to complete certain tasks. By the end of the simulation, the students had planned, problem-solved, read, researched, role-played, spent “money”, took responsibility for the consequences of their decisions, and most importantly, learned the value of teamwork.

They came out in numbers to cheer on Ashley, Logan and Meghan.” Each of the Sayville competitors came home with two medals, but regardless of medals garnered, the Special Athletes truly won the admiration of all for their willingness to try. And that makes all the difference!
“Each member of my class,” Kiki explained more about their one-day excursion, “was provided with a ‘debit card’ which provided us with our gross annual income, our occupation, the amount of members in our family and our taxes. After that, we calculated our net monthly income, and with that, determined how much we were able to spend on monthly expenses. With knowledge of how much we could afford, we were sent out to buy groceries, a house and car, utilities and any other expenses to get us through the month. Through this simulation we discovered that in order to be successful you must consider your wants and needs and sometimes settle for less than you desire. Finance Park is the perfect way to teach kids that you must plan for your future in order to avoid debt.” (Kiki, as a Sayville Senior, plans to major in Finance at New Paltz and is already contemplating enrolling in their 5-year MBA program.) Sayville student Robbie Colarusso expressed a similar experience. “We received Life Situation Cards that stated our occupation, salary, taxes, and other important information. I then had to calculate our NMI (net monthly income, and pay all of my expenses. This absolutely prepared me for upcoming college and life itself. I learned to carefully invest money into things while also thinking out the consequences and how you will benefit from it.” It was a very positive experience for the Sayville students.

Food Or Drink Permitted” signs clearly plastered on every entrance – smuggling some type of snack in a well-concealed pocket, a purse, under your hat…whatever. Why should you pay an exorbitant price for refreshments when you can surely find something for far less at a local convenience store, right? It’s a great idea, in theory. What’s the harm in bringing a bottle of water, a candy bar, maybe even a small bag of popcorn or chips? Well, none, except when said container self-destructs in your bag before making it through the door unscathed. Allow me to explain. I recently attended the Iron Man movie marathon screening at my local theatre along with my cousin and his friend. Four movies over nearly 12 hours, necessitating a stockpile
those 15-20 minutes weren’t quite enough, well, why let leftover food and beverages go to waste? Not when I had a rather spacious pocketbook with me. Picture the scene: my pocketbook plus a rather large, rather full fountain soda… oh, and my cousin’s wrapped hamburger thrown in for good measure. You do the math. No sooner were we halfway down the hallway when I felt the faint sensation of liquid trickling out of my bag, down my leg… OH NO, I thought. Of course, trying to remain covert, the first thing I did was crouch down and take a peak inside the pocketbook. It was a river of root beer. No, more like a gulf. I gingerly picked my belongings out of the mess and laid them out, sopping, on the rug in front of our theatre. I then took my bag and carefully walked it over to the nearest garbage and poured the
hall, past two perplexed security guards, into the bathroom, hoping that a mile or so of super-absorbent paper towel would do the trick. No such luck. Thanks to the era of modern conveniences, I was instead met with a wall of automatic hand dryers. Not a paper towel in sight. About 20 minutes later, I made my way into our theatre, having used approximately 12 rolls of toilet paper to absorb as much of the remaining soda as I could. I turned my pocketbook inside out and tossed whatever wrung-out belongings I could salvage back in. All that to save a few bucks on overpriced concessions. And I didn’t even have a beverage to show for it. My cousin’s hamburger, on the other hand, managed to survive the deluge untouched, dry as a bone. Go figure.

Dr. Scott Goldstein, pediatric dentist from Medford and invited guest to the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Dental Assisting Program at the Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport told the students, “Oral health is the window to a good body.” Dental Assisting Teacher Carol Donohue invites Dr. Goldstein to speak to her students each year because, “He is a valuable resource. He provides input on industry standards which keeps the curriculum current.” He practiced general dentistry in the first Gulf War but decided to specialize in pediatrics. He said, “I like pediatric dentistry because I feel I can make a difference during the early developmental years.” He teaches his specialty at St. Charles Hospital to those doctors in the Dental Residency Program. During the question and answer session, Jennifer
Leon, a Bay Shore USFD student shared that she would like to work in a pediatric dental office. She asked, “What do you look for when hiring someone?” Dr. Goldstein, who has an animated personality yet projects professionalism, responded, “First, you need to like kids.” He added, “And, you have to remember that when you work with children, you are really treating two people at the same time, the child, and the parent.” “We are a team,” said Goldstein. “The parents, my assistants, and me; we work together.” He expects that members of his staff be able to multi-task, be computer literate, have experience working with children, and be a social person. “Let’s face it,” he said, “my responsibility is to teach you so you can learn and you will be putting your hands in someone’s mouth. You have to like what you will be doing every day.” Dr. Goldstein is
very familiar with the ESBOCES program, having offered internships to many students over the years. He has also donated cutting-edge, industry standard equipment for the students use so they stay current. He said, “ESBOCES students are practicing real life work here in the classroom. Ms. Donohue and I talk frequently. We never stop learning in health care.” Students in the ESBOCES Dental Assisting Program learn how to work chair side with the dentist, prepare dental materials, perform basic business procedures, and prepare client’s data. They also obtain practical experience in radiology and four-handed dentistry. Professors Named Fellows Two Stony Brook University professors – Leonardo Rastelli, PhD and Sheila Silver, PhD – have been named 2013 Guggenheim Fellows based on distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for the future. The fellowships, often called “midcareer” awards, are intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. In the 89th annual John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation competition for the United States and Canada, Rastelli, Associate Professor in the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Silver, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor, Department of Music, were selected as part of a diverse group of 175 scholars, artists, and scientists on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise. They were chosen from among almost 3,000 applicants. Rastelli, who was selected for the fellowship in the category of Natural Sciences, received his PhD in 2000 from MIT. He was a postdoc and Assistant Professor at Princeton before joining Stony Brook in 2006. He works on string theory and quantum field theory. “I am very honored by this recognition,” Rastelli said. “I am both proud and intimidated to appear in the same list as the illustrious colleagues who received the fellowship before.” Rastelli’s Guggenheim project is called The Superconformal Bootstrap Program. “The general idea of the ‘bootstrap’ is that physical theories must obey
stringent consistency conditions,” Rastelli said. “In collaboration with a very talented group of students and postdocs, I plan to apply the modern bootstrap program to theories that have a high degree of symmetry; they are both conformal (which means that they have no intrinsic length scale) and supersymmetric. Supersymmetry is a symmetry that relates ‘bosons’ and ‘fermions.’ It is a very powerful symmetry – many important discoveries about it were made at Stony Brook. This approach gives insight into certain aspects of physical theories for which no other computational scheme is available.” Silver was selected in the field of Creative Arts/Music Composition. She has written in a wide range of mediums, from solo instrumental works to large orchestral works; from opera to feature film scores. For the past few years, Silver has been composing primarily for the voice and for opera. In 2007 she received the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in Music Composition for Opera to compose her opera, The Wooden Sword, which premiered in 2010. Also premiering in 2010 was The White Rooster, A Tale of Compassion, commissioned by the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries for the exhibit In the Realm of the Buddha, a dramatic cantata composed for the vocal ensemble Tapestry, plus six Tibetan singing bowls and frame drums. She is now completing Beauty Intolerable, a Songbook based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, composed in collaboration with American Opera Projects and the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society, which will premiere this June in New York City. Her Guggenheim Fellowship was awarded for work
on her next opera, A Thousand Splendid Suns, based on the international best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner. In May, Silver will begin, with her family, a six-month stay in Pune, India, studying Hindustani music in preparation for beginning her new opera. She will study Hindustani music with master singer, Narayan Bodas, and also will study the tabla, a percussion instrument used in Hindustani classical music. “I want my Western voice to have some of the color – feel – of Hindustani music because this is at the heart of Afghan music,” she said. While in India, Silver also will be working with her librettist, Stephen Kitsakos, Professor of Theater at SUNY New Paltz, to complete the first draft of the opera’s libretto. Since its establishment in 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has granted over $306 million in Fellowships to more than 17,500 individuals, among whom are scores of Nobel laureates, poets laureate, winners of Pulitzer Prizes, Fields Medals, and of other important, internationally recognized honors. “These artists and writers, scholars and scientists, represent the best of the best,” Edward Hirsch, president of the Foundation, said of the 175 new Guggenheim fellows. “Since 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has always bet everything on the individual, and we’re thrilled to continue the tradition with this wonderfully talented and diverse group. It’s an honor to be able to support these individuals to do the work they were meant to do.”

Audition Now High school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties with dreams of becoming actors, dancers, playwrights, painters, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers, singers or lighting designers are encouraged to audition for the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), consistently voted Bethpage Best Arts School since 2011.
Part of the public school system, LIHSA is conveniently located at a state-of-the-art facility in Syosset where students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to attend either a half- or fullday program. Students receive professional-level training in art, dance, drama, theatre technology, instrumental or vocal music, musical theatre,
film or playwriting each day as a supplement to their regular course of study. Students can compose and create original works in the school’s cuttingedge Digital Media and Production Lab. hotline, is currently recruiting volunteers to participate in its upcoming Counselor Assistant Training Program. No experience is necessary and the hours are flexible (around-the-
requirements. Students who elect the full-day option complete all requirements for obtaining their Regents or Advanced Regents diploma at LIHSA. A broad spectrum of opportunities is available to students interested in studying the arts. A staff consisting of teachers and practicing professional artists prepares the students for auditions,
helps with portfolio selections and steers students toward specialized awards and honors. More than 98 percent of the graduates go on to colleges or conservatories. Eighty-three graduates from the class of 2012 collectively earned more than $6.5 million in scholarships and grants, and are now attending some of the most

Is Sandy Bringing Jellyfish? By: Tyler Cianciulli Some consider jellyfish to be stinging nightmares, but it is proving to be evident that, through their seemingly mindless movement, jellies actually help the ecosystem. With every pulsating contraction of a jellyfish’s umbrella, a stew of marine matter is propelled, therefore creating a turbulent environment that is rich in nutrients. In simpler terms, a jelly brings fertile water from the depths through its movement. This biogenic mixing leads to a plankton boom, which results in a surge of baitfish and ultimately works up the food chain to create a
healthy, thriving ecosystem. Compounded with this effect, a jellyfish also helps to maintain a healthy population of organisms by both eating some and protecting others. In addition, jellyfish are a key food source for many animals. One of these, the sea turtle, relies on jellies for its daily meal. They are quite abundant here on Long Island, but like with any other animal, jellyfish are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of predators and prey. In the Long Island Sound, one of the most diverse bar-built estuaries on the east coast of the United States of America, jellyfish serve an alternate purpose. This 650 million
year-old creature picks up the slack of eelgrass. During the years in which eelgrass is on a down-swing, many marine birds will peck at the fleshy, gooey umbrella of these gelatinous floating invertebrates. Tuna, sharks and even other jellyfish partake in grazing upon these small cnidarians. When a jellyfish dies unconsumed, it acts as a host for even more life. Funguses, bacteria and other decomposers break down and feast upon the deceased organism. It can be said that the jellyfish is a “jack-of-all-trades” kind of animal that isn’t just a monster, but a helpful organism that is crucial to the survival of many of Long Island’s creatures.
