Eve Gyser from the American Heart Association presented students at Cherokee Street Elementary School with a plaque recognizing the community’s contribution of over $22,000 to the fight against heart disease. Art Exhibit Jeanne Fields Rogers of East Islip, who grew up in Islip, will be having a One Woman Art Exhibit of her Watercolor Florals and Scenes of Long Island at the Cold Spring Harbor Library during the entire month of May. Jeanne, a former Art Teacher in Sayville and Consultant for Dowling College, is President of the Suffolk Branch of the National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW), and member of South Bay Art Association (SBAA), Wet Paints Studio Art Group of Sayville, and Brookhaven Arts and Humanities Council (BAHC). She is also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and has been included in their recent publication “Remarkable Women in NY State History”. The Paths We Choose By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions
among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the
public. Of course, they should regardless. But in reality, it is the almighty dollar which dictates our purpose in life more than any sense of real responsibility. It’s a shame, as many of my fellow college classmates have long since abandoned the Journalism field for so-called loftier, more lucrative pursuits. But what of the fire? The motivation to make a difference? Not to mention, the four years of schooling at a rather expensive private university…But to each his/her own. For me, all it takes is one evening of stimulating conversation to quell any doubts that this is the field for me. Proud to be a Journalist, always.

Felicio attended the presentation and told Erica and Debbie that he is “… proud of you both for responding quickly, working together, and saving the life of one of our students.” MartinoLattuga and Billotto performed CPR on the student and were able to revive him, before paramedics arrived on the scene. At the time Erica was 6 ½ months pregnant, and as a result of her intercession, experienced major complications, putting herself and the health of her unborn child in jeopardy. Martino-Lattuga was
recently notified by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Association that her name would be added to the association’s Life Honor Roll, for her life saving action while on duty at Connetquot HS. Congratulations to Erica Martino-Lattuga and Debbie Billotto for your well deserved recognition by the Connetquot Board of Education. GOING GREEN AT THE GAME FARM - On April 20th The Long Island Game Farm hosted Green At The Game Farm, a special free craft project in celebration of Earth Day. Children, with the help of their parents and Long Island Game Farm staff decorated and made their own rain sticks. They also learned the sounds a rain stick makes and what it is used for. After completing their project, children took part in a special Earth Day scavenger hunt as they traveled throughout the Game Farm looking for clues. As any prospective college student knows, SAT scores and your Grade Point Average are not the only factors that play a role in the admissions process. It is said that colleges like a well-rounded student. The term “well-rounded” is often thrown about without thought, which raises the question: what exactly is an extracurricular? Most colleges would define the term “extracurricular” as something done or happening outside the normal curriculum of a school or college. This means anything from Archery to volunteering at a Zoo. Extracurricular activities don’t have to be
a chore; finding those that suit your interest are a good way to make friends, explore careers and ultimately help attain your goals. So what do you love to do? Really, anything counts as an extracurricular! Fishing, hiking, boating, constructing and drawing all help you as a person, and as an applicant. Even playing the guitar has hidden benefits that any future college would love to see. Most universities or colleges prefer an abundance of extracurricular activities, and some even base 25% of their decision on these items. It is a good idea to get an early start. One would advise freshmen to begin compiling their list of
sports, clubs, volunteer hours and passions now. It is one of those things essential to your success and maximizing the caliber of school you or your child plan on attending. Some of the most favorable activities include Student Council, being the captain of a sports team, club or any other leadership position. Having a plethora of after-school programs can only boost one’s chances, giving a reason to spend one’s time wisely! On top of being good résumé padding, extracurricular activities help portray your passions to a potential school. Is your kid going to college anytime soon? If so, remember, extracurricular activities actually matter!

The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. Every Wednesday for the past two years, students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Facilities Maintenance program at the Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale, under the direction of teacher Art Pagano, have visited Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Patchogue to clean the church, religion classrooms, and the bagel breakfast area. The students only use green cleaning products when disinfecting, cleaning windows, and degreasing. The students visit the
church every Wednesday for about two hours. Over the course of the school year, the students will have completed almost 80 hours of community service. Mr. Pagano said, “Not only is this a great learning experience for the students but they can add this to their resume.” Eastern Suffolk BOCES students create a portfolio prior to graduating. Information about the community service they have performed while enrolled at BOCES, as well as letters of introduction,

thank you letters, and CDs containing pictures and videos of them working and learning their skill comprises a portfolio they take with them into the “world of work.” On behalf of Father Mike Torpey, Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Maintenance Manager Will Garcia said, “There are three buildings to care for here and having the students clean the church and other areas is very helpful. They are very good workers.”

The ceremony took place on April 4th at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. It was a night filled with laughter, singing, crying, hugging, and cheering. These successful completers can now apply to take the New York State Licensing Examination.

Mrs. Lisa Farrell, Principal of Connetquot’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, recently welcomed an enthusiastic group of Connetquot High School students who helped kick off the annual Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program. On March 18th Connetquot HS English teacher Alise Salvaggio brought along 50 students to read with, inspire, and share their love of reading, with their new friends. Mrs. Farrell was very pleased as she watched the high school students interact with every one
of her elementary school classes. She said that “It was easy to see that our visitors worked hard in preparing age-appropriate lessons for our students. friends. A pizza lunch was enjoyed by the Connetquot students before they headed back to class, to share their experience with friends. Duffield’s PARP program is part of a nation-wide effort that asks parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes per day. The reading material can be anything that strengthens a child’s reading and communication skills. Mrs. Farrell thanked the high school students and Mrs. Salvaggio, for their outstanding visit with Helen B. Duffield Elementary School students.

MASTER CLASS - Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale Bohemia Middle School recently welcomed members of the SUNY Fredonia Woodwind Quintet for a concert and learning workshop. The professional group played a selection of chamber music for the students. Chamber music is a form of classical music composed and performed by small groups. The students also had the chance to work with Dr. Marc Guy, horn professor at SUNY Fredonia, on honing their musical talents and skills.
HEART BASKETS - Connetquot Central School District’s Arthur Premm Learning Center pre-school students were recently visited by staff from their local Home Depot to build heart-shaped baskets. Under the leadership of store manager John Weiss, several other Home Depot staff members brought each student their very own orange apron, a hammer, and a ‘make your own heart-shaped basket’ kit. While assembling the baskets, Home Depot staffers guided and assisted each student with crafting and hammering their personalized heart-shaped baskets, which the youngsters happily brought home.

ELEPHANT WINS FIRST - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Robotics Team recently took first place at the Jacob Javits Regional Robotics Competition in New York. The Connetquot students impressed judges with a robot named ‘Elephant’ as the only robot in the competition equipped with trunk-like limb that has the ability to picks things up off the floor.
BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AWARD - Janet & Jim Pickett, owners of Patchogue Printing & Web Design, were awarded the Small Business Improvement Award for 2013 at the Annual Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce Coalition Award Dinner held on Thursday, April 18th, at Windows on the Lake in Ronkonkoma. The $1,200 grant will be used toward the purchase of a wide format printer. This purchase will allow them to produce more work in-house.
Suffolk County Community College’s Stand up SCCC Committee was formed to encourage college-wide conversations on the topic of bullying and cyberbullying. This semester, students were invited to submit creative works to be judged for the ability to express how bullying or cyberbullying touched their life, how it impacts human dignity, or how students can take a stand against it. At a ceremony on April 18th, the committee announced the winners of the competition: Angela Cernuto, a resident of Mount Sinai, (photograph) “Some bruises are on the inside” Cory Gardner, a resident of Centereach, (mixed media painting) “Bullying Distorts All”

The winners received Samsung Galaxy tablets and Certificates of Merit from the College, as well as certificates from Suffolk County Legislator Thomas F. “Cool Things Happen When You Speak A Foreign Language” according to author, anesthesiologist and linguist Dr. Christopher J. Gallagher. On Wednesday, March 27th Dr. Gallagher visited the Connetquot Public Library to share his expertise and extensive repertoire of stories of how language transformed his life. His love of language began with his coauthor and late father Dr. William B. Gallagher and an opportunity to speak French with some Vietnamese refugees who’d settled in his home state of Wisconsin after the war. A family tradition, dating back to his grandfather who served as a physician during World War I, exemplified how a basic understanding of the German language helped him survive in a cellar occupied by wounded soldiers. Dr. Gallagher recalled some fascinating experiences; from purchasing coffee for travel weary German exchange students at
JFK, to conversing with Chinese students on the Stony Brook campus and reassuring foreign patients in their native tongue prior to surgery. He is fluent is five languages, conversational in six and has a working knowledge of four. This, coupled with his stint as a standup comedian made his presentation entertaining and informative. The audience contributed their own diverse stories of their desire to travel, learn the language of their ancestors and student posing questions about the most beneficial ways to study a foreign language. Dr. Gallagher advocates the use of free services and materials explaining “the price is always right at the library.” He considers foreign movies, CD’s and the Mango program excellent resources for language immersion. The single best trick to learning a language is choosing a book you love in English and get it in the language you intend to learn. The author of twelve books, Dr. Gallagher urges everyone who studies a foreign language to listen, practice and engage in conversation. The exchange between individuals who find even a brief common bond through language can be amazing and cool things can happen.

He allowed the children to touch the protective clothing, and stressed that children should not be frightened by the fireman’s protective clothing, mask or tools. Members of the West Sayville Fire Department visit Connetquot district schools to promote fire safety and education. Students had the opportunity to practice ‘stop, drop and roll’ in the event any of them should have their clothes catch
on fire. Another important lesson to be learned was not to search for toys or pets in the event of fire in the home … get out of the house and wait for mom and dad outside. Dr. Cholden, the teachers and all the students, thanked Assistant Chief Domingo for visiting the Arthur Premm School to talk about fire safety. The children were reminded about the safety lessons they learn at school, and were asked to share firefighter Domingo’s safety tips with their siblings and parents at home.
ROBOTICS TEAM ADVANCES - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Robotics Team recently visited the Arthur Premm School in Oakdale, to thank members of the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children for their financial support during the Robotics season. The Connetquot High School Robotics Team wrote a grant proposal for funding in order to compete at the Jacob Javits Region Competition in March.
Currently in their inaugural year, the FIRST Lego League Robotics team from Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District has made a national name for themselves. Having received two championship awards during the regional competition at Longwood High School earlier this year, the Academy Street Lion Bots have earned a bid to compete at the North American Championship Tournament in California this May. Out of the thousands of teams in
North America, only 72 teams were chosen for this honor. To prepare for this year’s contests, the students spent months applying real-world math and science concepts as they worked to design, build, test and program robots using integrated technology. During their preparation, the students were challenged to complete research similar to that facing today’s scientists and learn the critical thinking, teambuilding and presentation skills needed to succeed in
the tournament settings. Volunteers Cara and Jonathan Spier and Bob Kaler coach the team. The group, comprised of students in grades 3-5, has been meeting as part of the school’s PTA enrichment program. The district extends its congratulations to team members Sean Davis, Miles Fallon, Riley Kaler, Aiden Kleeman, Pierce McGuinness, Nicholas Mignano, Cole Spier, Matthew Stawicki and Tyler Teufel and wishes them well at the national competition this May.
The talent of BayportBlue Point School District’s student-musicians is evident during events throughout the schools and community. From annual concerts, performances as part of school musicals and during special events in the community the dedication and effort of these students shines through. This year, more than 40 students from across the district were selected to participate in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association band,
chorus and/or orchestra ensembles. Invitation into this coveted group is based on a student’s NYSSMA score from the prior year’s solo festival as well as letters of recommendation from their teachers. In addition to this countywide recognition, two high school music groups recently received recognition on the national stage. The Bayport-Blue Point High School chorus and orchestra participated in the “Festivals of Music” Competition in
the Washington D.C./ Baltimore area during the weekend of April 12th, during which the high school string orchestra, concert orchestra, and chorus all received ratings of “Excellent.” The high school string orchestra received an award of first place, the chorus received an award of second place, and the concert orchestra received a third place award in the groups’ three respective divisions. The groups were comprised of nearly 220 students.

Environmental Exhibit Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone marked the forty third anniversary of Earth Day today, unveiling an exhibit honoring one of Suffolk County’s most environmentally sensitive and significant areas, the Long Island Pine Barrens. The Suffolk County Historical Society has installed an exhibit,
Barren and Waste Land: Long Islanders and the Pine Barrens in the lobby of the H. Lee Dennison county office building in Hauppauge. “Although first created in 1997, this exhibition remains relevant today to the environment and culture of our region,” said County Executive Steve
Bellone. “The Long Island Pine Barrens is a rich ecosystem that Suffolk County is working hard to protect. This exhibit will help visitors to understand and appreciate the Pine Barren region more fully.” The exhibit focuses on one of the great natural resources of Long Island shown in its historic
context. On display are historic interpretations and images of the Pine Barrens region, including Camp Upton and the once booming cranberry industry of years gone by. Throughout history, the Long Island Pine Barrens has meant different thing to different cultures and segments of the
community. To Native Americans, the Pine Barrens was an ecosystem rich in resources, to be used in meeting daily living needs. European settlers used these resources too, although often in a manner that had destructive impacts. “The purpose of this exhibition is to provide
an interpretation of the relationship between various human cultures and the resources and landscapes that collectively comprise the Long Island Pine Barrens,” said Suffolk County Historian Peter Fox Cohalan. The exhibit runs through June 2013.

Outstanding Upstanders At Cherry Avenue elementary school in Sayville, “UPstander Week” was a new collaboration between the PTA board (comprised of six parents) and school Social Worker Naomi Barzcak in response to the new Dignity For All Students Act, effective since July 2012. At the beginning of the year, upon learning about DASA, the Cherry PTA board members “wanted to run a program to support our school,” explained PTA President Marisa Milo. “Mrs. Barczak had the same thought, so we joined forces! On behalf of the PTA board, I met several times with Mrs. Barczak, and we brainstormed and created ‘UPstander Week’—a weeklong program that tailored the anti-bullying message in an age appropriate manner.” UPstanders Week turned out to be more than the committee and Mrs. Barzcak had hoped - it was a huge success! UPstanders had four main elements to the program: 1. A PTA sponsored cultural arts program - the Prismatic Laser Light Show - that brought the UPstander messages to the students in an engaging and interactive program. 2. Daily Activities: Each day the children were encouraged to wear something specific to show their support of a different goal. 3. Each day during morning announcements, Dr. Stimmel gave an UPstander Challenge of the Day. The
challenges were as follow: · MONDAY: An UPstander makes a choice not to walk by, but to make things better. Pick up a piece of garbage in the hallway, lend an ear to an upset friend, stand up for someone who is being hurt with words - whatever you decide - make a choice to make something better during school today. · TUESDAY: The best thing you can do for a kid who is
· THURSDAY: Ask someone to play today - either someone new or someone who looks like they are alone. · FRIDAY: Sit by someone at lunch today that you’ve never sat next to—you will get to know someone new and may even make a new friend! 4. Bulletin boards around the school helped educate children on what an UPstander is exactly and how any child can be one. · In the cafeteria, the bulletin boards were decorated with an oceanic them that read: We may be different fish, but at Cherry, we all swim together. o On Monday, each child in school was given a paper fish to decorate. They wrote one way to be kind to others on their fish, and then decorated it to show their unique personality.
