County Executive Steven Bellone and the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel today announced that applications for “Round 11” Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Grants are available. A pool of $250,000 is available for partial funding of capital projects located in or adjacent to downtown areas on municipallyowned property. Applicants must be organizations that represent a downtown area and who partner with their local municipality. Organizations that represent downtown areas including business improvement districts, chambers of commerce, civic associations, historical societies, beautification societies, and local development corporations. Towns or villages who partner with a community organization are required to pass resolutions supporting the project on which the two entities partner. Projects must be capital in nature and have a significant and sustainable impact that enhances economic activity. “Providing grant funding through this program encourages local organizations to partner with their municipality

and find ways to enhance public lands, improve the vitality of business districts, and contribute to walkable communities and bustling downtowns,” said Bellone. Interact Club, Hempstead-Uniondale Rotary Club, Hempstead HS Haitian-American Group, Elwood Elementary School and various Lutheran and other church and community organizations helped us pack the meals to feed hungry individuals on Long Island and abroad. Members of the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station lent their muscle power and helped with the set-up of this event. The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. More than 800 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the

number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together. Servant activities and giving back to others are a big part of the curriculum at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School; and from April 11th through April 13th, LuHi hosted its 3rd Meal Packing Event. LuHi students, faculty and staff helped to package soy, rice, dried vegetables and seasoning mix to prepare nutritionally balanced meals. These meal packets were then distributed to Island Harvest, The Inn (Hempstead,) St. Hugh’s (Huntington Station,) St. Patrick’s (Huntington,) Our Lady of Grace Howard Beach,) the Freeport Emergency Food Pantry and other local food pantries in need. Additional meal packets are being shipped to the Andrew Grene School outside of Port au Prince, Haiti, an official feeding site that will prepare and serve the food to children in need. In total 310,044 meals were packed over the three-day period. In addition to LuHi’s student body and faculty

On April 4th, they celebrated their third home with their annual Spring Gala at The Watermill in Smithtown. The construction is completed

and they hope to have the home open very soon. The Importance Of Extracurriculars By: Tyler Cianciulli As any prospective college student knows, SAT scores and your Grade Point Average are not the only factors that play a role in the admissions process. It is said that colleges like a well-rounded student. The term “well-rounded” is often thrown about without thought, which raises the question: what exactly is an extracurricular? Most colleges would define the term “extracurricular” as something done or happening outside the normal curriculum of a school or college. This means anything from Archery to volunteering at a Zoo. Extracurricular activities don’t have to be

a chore; finding those that suit your interest are a good way to make friends, explore careers and ultimately help attain your goals. So what do you love to do? Really, anything counts as an extracurricular! Fishing, hiking, boating, constructing and drawing all help you as a person, and as an applicant. Even playing the guitar has hidden benefits that any future college would love to see. Most universities or colleges prefer an abundance of extracurricular activities, and some even base 25% of their decision on these items. It is a good idea to get an early start. One would advise freshmen to begin compiling their list of

sports, clubs, volunteer hours and passions now. It is one of those things essential to your success and maximizing the caliber of school you or your child plan on attending. Some of the most favorable activities include Student Council, being the captain of a sports team, club or any other leadership position. Having a plethora of after-school programs can only boost one’s chances, giving a reason to spend one’s time wisely! On top of being good résumé padding, extracurricular activities help portray your passions to a potential school. Is your kid going to college anytime soon? If so, remember, extracurricular activities actually matter!

The Paths We Choose By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions

among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the

public. Of course, they should regardless. But in reality, it is the almighty dollar which dictates our purpose in life more than any sense of real responsibility. It’s a shame, as many of my fellow college classmates have long since abandoned the Journalism field for so-called loftier, more lucrative pursuits. But what of the fire? The motivation to make a difference? Not to mention, the four years of schooling at a rather expensive private university…But to each his/her own. For me, all it takes is one evening of stimulating conversation to quell any doubts that this is the field for me. Proud to be a Journalist, always.

Five hundred supporters gathered together to celebrate the Long Island Housing Partnership’s (LIHP) 25th Anniversary. The event – held on April 11th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury – celebrated LIHP’s 25 years of helping Long Islanders achieve the American Dream of home ownership. Shaun Donovan, United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, delivered the Keynote Address. Donovan’s tenure as HUD Secretary has reflected his commitment to making quality housing possible for every American. In December 2012, President Obama created the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and appointed Secretary Donovan as Chair. In his remarks Secretary Donovan spoke about LIHP’s achievements over the years and also described Hurricane Sandy relief and recovery efforts on Long Island as well as the importance of preparing for similar storms in the future. LIHP President Peter Elkowitz and Chairman of the Board Kevin S. Law described the numerous

successes LIHP has achieved and expressed their sincere gratitude to the many individuals and companies who have been partners to that success. In the past 25 years, “LIHP has transitioned from constructing 11 homes over two years to assisting more than 25,000 individuals achieve their American Dream of home ownership,” stated Law. LIHP’s programs have expanded significantly through the years and now include construction; providing technical assistance to municipalities, developers and not-forprofit organizations in the construction of affordable workforce housing; education and counseling (from pre-purchase to default/ foreclosure counseling); down payment assistance programs; neighborhood stabilization; residential rehabilitation; and one of the largest Employer Assisted Housing Programs in the nation. “There is no finer reward than to see someone – who believed they never could own a house – take the keys to their front door and walk into their first home!” stated Elkowitz.

FASHION TAKES OVER - The East Islip High School PTSA and SADD Club held their annual Fashion Show on March 20th, featuring over 80 students and teachers on the runway. In recognition of National Volunteer Week, St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center in collaboration with St. Catherine of Siena Hospital Medical Center held an appreciation event to honor their volunteers. This event was attended by over 80 individuals who were thanked by the staff and administration for their time and dedication. The Director of Volunteers, Heather Reynolds, expressed her gratitude to the volunteers, “Thank you for all your hard work, time and talent, all of us here at St. Catherine of Siena truly appreciate your efforts and support.”

Students of the hospital’s Healthcare Career Exploration and Internship Program crafted beautiful banners which displayed the theme “Coming together in unity to help the community.” Additionally, Nicole Heller of Cake Chaos by Nicole donated 100 beautifully decorated cupcakes for the event. As an added token of appreciation, the residents made napkins in the shape of flowers to fill with candy kisses to be given to each volunteer. It was a day of giving back to these wonderful, selfless, generous individuals who give of their time to the residents and patients each day.

On April 23rd, Most Rev. William Murphy, Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, formally blessed St. Joseph Hospital’s new chapel. The event was televised live in patient rooms and in the staff room for the benefit of patients and their families, visitors and hospital staff. Bishop Murphy also spent time with patients, while touring the hospital. “It was an honor to welcome Bishop Murphy to St. Joseph,” commented

Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Drew Pallas. “We hope patients and visitors will find comfort and strength in our newly blessed chapel.” In 2010, St. Joseph formerly known as New Island - joined Catholic Health Services, which was founded in 1997 by the Diocese of Rockville Centre to oversee its health care facilities serving the people of Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Volunteers are needed to assist Stony Brook University staff on May 4th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when 6,000 pinwheels will be installed in a field at South P Lot on the Stony Brook University Campus. The pinwheels represent the lives lost annually to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The pinwheels will serve as a powerful backdrop at Stony Brook University’s annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, which will take place on May 11th, starting at 2 p.m. The annual Ride for Life, started in 1998 by Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS patient, advocate, and founder of the Ride for Life Organization, raises awareness and

funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients across Long Island begins May 6th and ends May 18th. A cornerstone of the Ride is the Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony at Stony Brook. The Ride also helps support Stony Brook Medicine’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association certified center on Long Island. Area students, members of the community, and others interested in supporting the Ride for Life are welcome to help install the pinwheels. The idea of the pinwheels, conceived by Christopher Pendergast, is to remind everyone of the importance of research to seek better treatments

for ALS and that a cure is “blowin’ in the wind.” For students seeking community service recognition that may be required from organizations or schools, a form is available to recognize their efforts. All volunteers are requested to bring a screwdriver if they have one. Refreshments are available to volunteers, including bagels during the morning hours and pizza and beverages for lunch. decades. The scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the memories of Stanley John Novak, the Game Farm’s co-founder, and his daughter, Susan Mary Novak. In 1999, Stanley Novak was 66 and had been building the Long Island Game Farm for nearly 30 years. Sadly, he died from a heart attack, leaving his legacy behind. In 2001, his daughter, Susan, who started working at the Game Farm when she was five years old, died from Multiple Myeloma at age 37. Both were passionate about animals and were steadfast in maintaining Long Island’s environment. “I can think of no better way to help preserve the memories of Stanley and Susan. They helped our family pursue its dream of building a park where children can see and interact with animals found in nature. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone marked the forty third anniversary of Earth Day today, unveiling an exhibit honoring one of Suffolk County’s most environmentally sensitive and significant areas, the Long Island Pine Barrens. The Suffolk County Historical Society has installed an exhibit, Barren and Waste Land: Long Islanders and the Pine Barrens in the lobby of the H. Lee Dennison county office building in Hauppauge. “Although first created in 1997, this exhibition remains relevant today to the environment and culture of our region,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “The Long Island Pine Barrens is a rich ecosystem that Suffolk County is working hard to protect. This exhibit will help visitors to understand and appreciate the Pine Barren region more fully.” The exhibit focuses on one of the great natural resources of Long Island shown in its historic

Throughout history, the Long Island Pine Barrens has meant different thing to different cultures and segments of the community. To Native Americans, the Pine Barrens was an ecosystem rich in resources, to be used in meeting daily living needs. European settlers used these resources too, although often in a manner that had destructive impacts. “The purpose of this exhibition is to provide an interpretation of the relationship between various human cultures and the resources and landscapes that collectively comprise the Long Island Pine Barrens,” said Suffolk County Historian Peter Fox Cohalan. The exhibit runs through June 2013.

LILAC CONFERENCE - On April 5th, Bay Shore teachers Matt Pasca, Amy Nardone, Christine Chocko and Caterina Palmeri joined English Language Arts Director Jeannette Senneca and Middle School Assistant Principal Donna Mandella in attendance at the annual Long Island Language Arts Council conference at the Melville Marriott. This year’s theme was “Literacy at the Core” and all six members of the Bay Shore contingent enjoyed the day’s workshops and two dynamic keynote speakers, Kelly Gallagher and Lester Laminack.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING - Bay Shore High School’s Service Honor Society (SHS) recently participated in its annual Souper Bowl of Caring, a fundraiser that collects money and food for those in need. Donations were delivered to the United Methodist Church of Bay Shore on East Main Street, for which Reverend Sungmu Lee, PhD expressed his gratitude. This year, the collection was led by Bay Shore High School Junior Matthew Miller. Under his leadership, the group raised twice the amount of money collected last year.

SPORTS NIGHT - On March 21st, Bay Shore Mary G. Clarkson School hosted another in its series of highly anticipated “Sports Night” activities where administrators, staff, parents, and students participate in challenging feats of physical ability and endurance. Designed by MGC Physical Education teachers Mrs. Ochwat, Ms. Pasquerella and Ms. Arias, all of the evening’s activities proved to be invigorating, stimulating, heart healthy and just plain fun!

Congratulations to Bay Shore High School Senior Marisol Nazario, whose artwork has been accepted to the prestigious Long Island’s Best Young Artists Exhibition at The

Heckscher Museum in Huntington. A reception and Award ceremony took place on April 6th. This marks the first time Bay Shore High School will be among the schools featured in this exhibition. The show’s reception proved an exciting evening for all the featured students and the museum overflowed with attendees. 2013 marks the show’s 17th year and 49 public and private schools participated, submitting 288 works of which 80

were selected by Curator Lisa Chalif. Marisol Narzario, whose piece Cloud Lane was among the 80 works chosen for this phenomenal exhibition, is an outstanding wellrounded student who has distinguished herself in art, track and high level academic classes such as IB and AP. Marisol has also been selected as a recipient of a grant from St Joseph’s College for full tuition for 4 years of collegial studies there. Congratulations to Marisol!

LATIN COMPETITION - Recently, a group of Bay Shore Middle School 8th graders, under the guidance of their Latin teacher Ms. Aratoon, and 18 of Dr. Herbst’s High School Latin students attended Certamen at Stony Brook University. The Certamen is a Classics-themed quiz bowl competition in which students compete at different levels, from beginner to advanced. Each year, Ms. Aratoon and Dr. Herbst take a team of top students to compete in this fun event, attended by teams from all over Suffolk County and organized by the Suffolk Classical Society.

Fiddler On The Roof

Ken Rotunno’s tiebreaking triple in the bottom of the sixth inning helped the Redmen beat Half Hollow Hills West, 5-1, sending the team into first place in Suffolk League IV. The game was scoreless until the third inning, when Paul Dondero hit a single, sending Brandon Dowd home. Three innings

later, Hills West tied the score despite stellar pitching from East Islip hurler David Palmer, who gave up only five hits for the day. After Hills West pitcher T.J. Montalbano hit batter Steve Rosenvold with a pitch and walked Nick Osburn, Rotunno came to the plate and hit a fastball to right-centerfield, allowing Rosenvold and

Country Earth Day

The stage at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary was transformed into a Jewish village in 1905 Russia as the school’s Drama Club wowed the audience of parents, teachers and fellow students with their vibrant production of Fiddler on the Roof Jr. RCK’s theater students combined their talents during their April 20 and 21 performances of the classic musical, written by Jerry Bock (music), Sheldon Harris (lyrics) and Joseph Stein (book). Based on Sholem Aleichem’s tale Tevye and His Daughters, Fiddler on the Roof examines the struggle to balance family, religious and cultural traditions against a change in customs and living conditions. The acclaimed show originally opened on Broadway in 1964, winning nine Tony Awards

and eventually yielding a 1971 film version. The children of RCK worked especially hard to bring this timeless and thoughtprovoking story to life through colorful costumes and sets as well as inspired, emotional acting. “Once again the students at RCK worked hard to produce a terrific musical production,” said RCK teacher and “Fiddler” director Dennis Clancy. “The students of RCK are certainly a very talented and committed group of kids and I was blown away by the final production,” said art teacher and set designer Dana Belfiore. “I am incredibly proud of all the hard work the students of the stage crew and set design put into the play.” Musical direction from teacher Margaret Strzelecka proved topnotch, as both ensemble

and vocal soloists delivered rousing renditions of the musical’s much-loved songs, from Tradition, Matchmaker and the always amusing If I Were A Rich Man, to the elegiac Sunrise, Sunset. “I was so impressed with the RCK Drama Club’s performance,” said Principal Danielle Naccarato. “They were simply amazing! Once again, Mr. Clancy, Ms. Belfiore and Mrs. Strzelecka produced a fantastic show.” Naccarato also noted that a special grant from the For the Kids Foundation had funded this worthy production. “I am so thankful to FTK for giving RCK the opportunity to have a Drama Club and stage crew this year,” she added. South Country School students are celebrating Earth Day this year by doing their part to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. South Country teacher Ms. Keish Bolling told her students, “Our planet Earth takes care of us by supplying all of the things we need, including fresh air to breathe, water to drink and a wide variety of foods. Consequently we must take care of our world!” Students worked

to remind others about simple, everyday things they can do to make a difference. Here are some of their suggestions: recycle paper, cans, bottles and plastics; trash is not always garbage; reuse things and fix them if they are broken instead of throwing them away; conserve water; turn the water off when brushing your teeth; don’t waste energy; shut the lights when you leave a room;

recycle clothes, toys and books you can no longer use by giving them to someone who needs them. These South Country students believe Earth Day is Every Day! and eagerly share the responsibility of recycling paper, cans, bottles and plastic containers accumulated in the classroom. They urge everyone to make a resolution this year to give back to our planet Earth.

was donated directly to the cause. Ponytails were also accepted this time, to be donated to a charity that makes wigs. The spirit of volunteerism was not restricted to high schoolers this year. Several determined East Islip Middle School students also shaved their heads, including siblings Jenny Murphy (sixth grade) and Thomas Murphy (eighth grade), who joined their older brother, high school senior Billy Murphy, in raising $1,300 for the cancer-fighting effort. “Billy had done St. Baldrick’s last year,” explained their mother, Pattie Murphy. “Jenny was very inspired and had been talking about it since then.

Then Thomas joined them. Jenny went door-to-door in our neighborhood with Billy and Tommy and also her little sister Kristy. She also went to her friends’ houses, raising money. They asked their teachers as well.” Like many St. Baldrick’s volunteers, for the Murphys the fight against cancer was personal. “Their grandmother Jenny passed away from cancer and their uncle Ange was a cancer survivor,” added Pattie Murphy, “so they did it for them and for Thomas’ friend Brian Fitzmaurice, who was recently diagnosed.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

East Islip High School’s Forum was packed with “shavees” and well-wishers on March 20th as the school’s National Honor Society hosted another St. Baldrick’s Day. Volunteers shave their heads during this annual event to raise money for childhood cancer research. The festivities were organized by students Skylar Clemens and Antonella Vazquez for their National Honor Society service project, assisted by the Science Honor Society and teacher Marguerite Gomez. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation began these annual days of charitable shaving over a dozen years ago, and the nonprofit organization has since grown worldwide into the largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research. St. Baldrick’s volunteers raised over $30 million in 2012 alone by shaving heads and fundraising. This year’s St. Baldrick’s event at East Islip featured 24 shavees, according to Gomez, including 10 girls. A total of $7,540

Fifth Avenue Fundraiser

This year, Bay Shore Fifth Avenue School PFA Board (Ms. Danowski, Ms. DiGilio, Ms. White, Ms. Snyder, Ms. Haspel and Ms. Sims) and additional volunteer members organized a tremendously successful fundraiser entitled Viva Las Vegas. Fifth Avenue’s very own Elvis (Mr. Cascio) performed some famous tunes complete with back-

up dancers (Mrs. Wilson and some coordinated and fun-loving staff members). The Timber Point Country Club provided a large enough venue for over 240 guests while Mr. Marazita, a parent of a Fifth Avenue student, played D.J., keeping the evening moving, the guests laughing, and the Auction Basket winners dancing to the front to claim their

prizes. Contributions from families, classes and local businesses were fantastic and included Coach and Michael Kors bags, iPads, jewelry, bikes, and numerous other goodies. Many thanks to everyone who came and helped make this event such a huge success.

Pond Day

For the seventh year in a row, students in Islip High School’s Keep Islip Clean club have participated in Pond Day, an annual event where the high schoolers participate in a cleanup within the Islip community in recognition of Earth Day. This year, the students celebrated a little early, beautifying the high school campus on Friday, April 19th. Throughout the day, the

students cleaned Pardees Pond and its shoreline, created a garden near the school’s marquee sign, enhanced the existing gardens near the 9/11 memorial, built a swale drainage area on the runoff gutter near the parking lot, and painted birdhouses and plant watering spikes. “It’s nice to educate people on the environment and what it means to keep it clean,” said KIC

President Amanda Findley. “I love this club, and it changed how I view the environment.” Added adviser Wayne Mennecke on why they brought this project to the high school, “KIC began as a Town of Islip initiative; we are Islip and we represent Islip, so it made sense to bring what the Town practices to our students.”

During the week of April 8th, the East Islip girls golf team finished 1-1 in League III. Team captain Kendall Allmendinger had two outstanding rounds in both matches, senior Elizabeth Sallie had a season low score in a match against West Islip and junior Cathy

Marku had a personal low score of 46 against Bellport. In her first varsity match, sophomore Justina Marku won her point and according to coach Judith Fischer, played an extremely strong round. In the following week, the team went 2-1, with

their league record now standing at 4-2. This week they beat BayportBlue Point, 8-1, at home on April 22nd, and are scheduled for contests on April 24th at home against Connetquot and April 25th at West Sayville.

Golf Team Plays Strong

Connetquot Elementary School’s second-grade classes traveled through Africa via song during their two days of performances of The Elephant’s Child musical. In three separate productions, taking place on March 14th and 15th, Connetquot’s youngsters performed dressed in colorful animal costumes representing elephants, crocodiles, snakes, gorillas, zebras, ostriches, giraffes, hippos, tigers, lions and kolo kolo birds. The whimsical story, based on the classic 1902 tale by Rudyard Kipling (one of “Just So Stories for Little Children”), was adapted for the stage by Connetquot music teacher

Eileen Egbert from the Virginia Kolk Pedulla play. It explains how the elephant came to have a long trunk, using the travelogue form. While entertaining the parents and fellow students in the audience, the amusing batch of Egbertdirected songs like “In Deepest, Deepest Africa,” I’m a Kolo Kolo Bird,” “The Limpopo River,” “The Crocodile Pulled” and “A Trunk Is a Handy Dandy Thing” also served to educate the participants on the geography and history of Africa. Four traditional African songs from various areas of the continent – “Funga Alafia” (Nigeria), “Dipidu” (Uganda), “Kye

Kye Kule (Che Che Kule)” (Ghana) and “Hamba Ni Kahle” (South Africa) – were also included, adding to the richness of the show. “The costumes were stunning, as were the students’ acting and musical abilities,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “The many parents in attendance were enthralled by the creativity of the multitalented actors and actresses.
