in a closed position. Hence, the lack of cool air. Instant classic. Oh but that wasn’t where it ended. Through the years, I have on occasion come out with a phrase or expression which – so I thought – was quite cliché and widely used. Except… I may have gotten it slightly wrong. Very wrong, in fact. Case in point: Moo point. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, this is what I thought I had heard, time and time again, never doubting that it was, in fact, the commonly accepted form of the expression. Oh, but there’s more. There was the “play it by year” debacle. I forget exactly how that one came up, but even after I was met with blank stares and a general, “I’m sorry,

what did you just say?” reaction, I was still convinced that my version made perfect sense. I clearly remember attempting to justify it by explaining, “It’s like, you wait a year and see how it goes…play it by year…get it?” Apparently not. Where did all of these little nuggets of wisdom come from? One can only imagine. I’d like to think they were compiled throughout the many years of studying and writing papers, of researching and reading, of indulging that perfectionist gene to the point that – years later, when all that was behind me – I was free to embrace the airhead that was lurking just under the surface all along. See, all that schoolwork must have done unrepairable damage – um, I mean irreparable. Right.

I’m sure we have all heard the expression, “book smart, but no common sense.” It seems slightly contradictory, but quite accurate in many cases. I can vouch for that. I seem to recall an incident several years back – mainly because I have continually been reminded of it – of when I came storming downstairs, beyond frustrated at how hot it was in my bedroom even though the window was wide open. Appointed To Board
In a resolution that was unanimously approved by the Suffolk County Legislature at its November 20th General Meeting, life-long Huntington Station resident Raymond R. Spatafora has
been appointed to a threeyear term as local representative of Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro on the Suffolk County Youth Board Coordinating Council. The 36-member Youth
Board Coordinating Council advises the County Executive on matters pertaining to children and youth and ensures effective countywide planning, development and management of resources necessary to sustain the youth service system. The majority of Board members are citizens representing each of the 18 legislative districts with unique expertise in health, education, recreation and/or youth activities. D’Amaro selected Spatafora based on
his long-standing commitment, dedication and tireless efforts on behalf of area youth. For more than thirty years, Spatafora coordinated and supervised participants in the Project EXCEL summer work program for disadvantaged youths. He is affiliated with the Tri-CYA Youth Agency Teen Center where he serves as a youth mentor for various afterschool middle and high school programs. Retired as a supervisor with the
Huntington Area Rapid Transit (HART) bus system, Spatafora is currently a licensed security officer for the South Huntington School District, where the Walt Whitman High School graduate is a constant presence and familiar face to students at sporting events and other after-school activities. In recognition of his decades of dedicated service to local youths, the South Huntington Education Foundation (SHEF) has already selected Spatafora as
one of its 2013 Honorees. He was also profiled on Patch.com as a “Face of Whitman.” “Ray Spatafora genuinely cares about children and has devoted countless hours to mentoring and helping them make the right choices,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “I know he will be an outstanding representative for the 17th Legislative District on the Youth Board Coordinating Council.”

She decorated the home, provided refreshments and by the end of the open house had greeted more than 100 visitors including neighbors, prospective homebuyers, real estate agents and friends. “I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and generosity of the community,” she recalls. “One person brought two new bicycles. I knew right away that the Daniel Gale Sotheby’s organization would want to join with me this year and help collect toys for children in our local communities. year to support Hurricane Sandy Victims, the Bethpage Turkey Drive collected frozen turkeys, cleaning supplies, diapers and shelf-stable nonperishable food for Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization which has been extensively involved in supporting victims of Hurricane Sandy. Hundreds of volunteers donated their time to help assist in the collection, helping to unload car deliveries, sort through groceries, and load donations onto Island Harvest’s refrigerated

In what has grown to become Long Island’s largest on-site food drive, the 4th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive took place recently and attracted hundreds of supporters from across Long Island who donated 2,500 frozen turkeys and more than 25,000 pounds of shelfstable food on-site – a new record amount of collected non-perishables. An additional 7,500 turkeys were donated in the days immediately following, bringing the total amount of turkeys collected this year to 10,000. Expanded this

The New York Islanders announced today that they raised $28,071 for area residents affected by Hurricane Sandy. These funds go directly to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to assist Long Islanders in need. Over the last week, people from around the world came together online to bid in the special Hockey With A Heart auction featuring one-of-a-kind sports and entertainment experiences. Local sports teams, organizations and individuals all donated to this unique auction, hosted by the Islanders, in an effort to help those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Fifteen donors contributed a total of 33 items, which were bid on more than 300 times. This auction raised $22,317 that will all go towards the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief fund. On Monday, November 12th, the Islanders held the Hockey With A Heart open skate fundraiser. The team invited all area residents to

Raising Funds For Relief join them for a day away from dealing with the Hurricane damage and over 2,000 people attended. The Islanders and SMG opened Nassau Coliseum’s ice free of charge for anyone who participated. Those who visited the arena were encouraged to bring monetary and nonperishable donations, while all concession proceeds also went directly to those in need. All together, along with employees from the New York Islanders, arena management company SMG and Coliseum concessionaire SAVOR, the team collected over 5,200 pounds of food, $5,754 in cash and countless amounts of clothing that filled two 24-foot box trucks amounting to 13,000 pounds. The Islanders donated all bedding, blankets and clothing to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, all food and baby supplies to Island Harvest and all money to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to assist Long Islanders in need.

On Saturday, November 17th, the trustees of the Northport Historical Society formally celebrated the institution’s 50th anniversary year with a gala dinner dance held at the Northport Yacht Club. Guest of honor was Mayor George Doll, whose leadership in establishing historic home preservation legislation in 2010 was strongly supported by the Society. The over 100 guests reflected the Society's growing membership and community involvement. A cocktail reception preceded a sumptuous dinner at which a live auction was conducted by trustee Ted Kaplan, who prodded the generous bidding with witty humor. Board of Trustees president Steven King introduced the honoree, Northport Mayor George Doll. The trustees presented Mayor Doll with an original watercolor by longtime Society member Ward Hooper. Experiencing Culture Students at Harley Avenue Primary and James H. Boyd Intermediate schools in the Elwood Union Free School District recently experienced Journey Into Native American Territory, an interactive educational program that brought the culture of Native American civilization to life. Students had the opportunity to see firsthand what life was like for a child of the Plains Indians. The experience
also examined how the tribes’ roles were defined and how they respected the animals and land around them. Students explored a variety of shelters, such as the traditional longhouse, as well as a museum of authentic artifacts including musical instruments, utensils and Native American toys for boys and girls. Also on display were animal cloths and skins used for protection from the elements.

The theme of the 2012-2013 Peace Poster Contest is Imagine Peace. At Silas Wood, students under the direction of art teacher Ms. Maribeth Hickey used a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint, to express the theme. The works created are unique and express the young artists’ life experiences and culture.
