Before I turn this column over to Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Superviser, I’m going to request that our Readers respond as quickly and as generously as they can. It’s going to take all of us to pitch in and help to heal these poor innocent souls. The 23 were used by their human owners in horrific and inhumane ways. Some were used as living “bait” to train the fighting dogs, their teeth filed down or their mouths strapped shut, unmercifly bitten and mauled. Their faces and bodies bare the visable scars; their hearts the invisible aching with longing for the love and homes they would never know. Others were used as breeders, living in small filthy cages - no human contact, no grassy fields to run in, no sweet fresh air or warm human touch. They bore litters of puppies sold to continue the cycle of cruelty. And then there are the fighting dogs, beaten and forced to act against their own sweet natures, prodded into tearing and killing. They were killed and discarded as garbage if they refused to fight. Readers, our combined communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties need to pull together and make sure each and every one of these dogs has a “happily ever after.” There was evil living amoung us and it will take the good in all of us to make things right. Please read on for a glimpse of what Dori saw on the raid that saved 23 lives... “On September 9th, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, along with the Suffolk County SPCA and Suffolk County Police Department,
confiscated 23 Pit Bulls from a deplorable home in Shirley, NY. Many of the dogs were stacked in rusted cages in a dark, very hot garage. All were living in their own feces and urine. Others were locked up in various rooms of the house with little or no ventilation, and the remainder lived outside in makeshift kennels. The stench could only be tolerated by a seasoned rescuer. There are few words to describe the expression in the eyes that stared back at us, unsure if we were friend or foe. After five hours of examining and removing the dogs, they were all brought back to The Brookhaven Animal Shelter to begin a new chapter in their lives. I’m sure many readers will cheer for their safety but please understand, they are but another 23 dogs added to the already overcrowded shelter. These dogs need homes desperately. Some are young, some are old, some are more beat up and scarred than others. But one thing is true... all are yearning for the love, companionship and a warm, cozy environment only a loving home can provide. Yes, we need money toward their medical care, blankets to keep them feeling secure, food to nourish their bodies, but more than anything, homes to nourish their souls. Most of the dogs are petite and all are sweet and submissive. I am asking everyone on Long Island to do something, one thing - small or large - for these dogs. Whether you can donate $1 toward the Help the Animals Fund or adopt one of these orphans, please do something. We are the voice of the voiceless... be a voice, change a life forever.”

On Saturday, September 22nd the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will celebrate the 41st Annual National Hunting and Fishing Day in collaboration with the Suffolk Alliance of Sportsmen at DEC’s Hunter Check Station in Ridge (Suffolk County), DEC Region One Director Peter A. Scully announced today. Popular childrenfocused activities are returning to this year and include a free kids’ fishing derby with prizes, archery lessons, pumpkins, balloons, popcorn and face painting. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that our region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” Director Scully said. “DEC
applauds our local sportsmen and women for their tireless work to protect our environment and natural resources. National Hunting and Fishing Day is the perfect time to recognize their achievements and efforts over the past 40 years.” National Hunting and Fishing Day was launched in 1972 as an official day of thanks to sportsmen and women who have, and continue to, heighten environmental awareness and contribute to the conservation of lands and forests. Most of us have probably experienced some sort of adversity in our lives, whether of the small, petty variety or the large, lifechanging type. Overall, though, it is how we choose to deal with it that ultimately defines us. If, by taking the high road, we can somehow learn from it while not losing our sense of self in the process, well then, that’s really all we can hope to accomplish. Someone recently pointed out to me that it’s often the star players who are frequently booed while on the road. Why? Because, despite the perceived animosity, there

Fifty-one teams faced off in a volleyball tournament that helped raise more than $5,700 - funds that will be earmarked to help fellow employees hit by financial hardship due to a natural disaster, illness or other loss.

On The Road exists a degree of grudging respect, perhaps even jealousy that the player isn’t part of their own home team. Well, if that’s the case, then I have to believe criticism is the sincerest form of flattery. Otherwise, why would someone take the time and effort to express such negativity, if not for the sheer fact that they are anything but indifferent? Rather, they must be quite invested. Believe me, I will never truly understand those who seem to make their living by spewing hurtful opinions toward others. Perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves; perhaps they are not
equipped to put their words into something more constructive. Either way, I believe it is a combination of arrogance and ignorance which motivates such behavior. But so be it. Those who live their lives to bring others down will continue to do so. Those who strive to make a difference in the lives of others will continue their quest to do so. In the end, all that matters is that a difference was made. If that means wearing that road uniform with pride in the face of adversity, then so be it. Being on the team sure beats being on the outside looking in, doesn’t it?

Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).
Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, Low grade fever, Muscles aches .If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, Low grade fever, muscle aches, vomiting.

This noncompetitive, family and team-friendly event is aimed at bringing together members of the community to raise funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes – a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. What’s more, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition that occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal (100 to 125 mg/dl after

Chaminade graduate Ryan Glass became Boy Scout Troop 125’s (Commack) 89th Eagle Scout and recently celebrated his achievement during his Eagle Court of Honor held at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Leadership Service Project, Ryan built a prayer garden behind Holy Family Regional School at Christ the King Church. The project consisted of digging 7-13 inches in the area, taking down the fence around it, placing recycled concrete aggregate, sand, and the pavers, replacing rotted railroad ties, and cleaning out the surrounding gardens. This area will be used by the school, church, parishioners and the nuns and priests living at Christ the King. This garden will service many generations of students and visitors for years to come. A total of 582 hours were logged into the project from the planning stage through its completion by Ryan and 19 others. The funds necessary to complete the project were raised during a car wash at Sunshine Physical Therapy in Commack, which is owned by Ryan’s mother, Venise Mulé-Glass. Ryan commented, “I chose to do my project at Holy Family Regional School at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church because of my fond memories and the basis of religion that I learned as a student there. Ryan began scouting in first grade as a Tiger in Cub Scout Pack 125, where he went on to earn his Arrow of Light Award, the highest award in the Cub Scout program. During his 7 years as a member of Troop 125, he held several positions including Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Den Chief and Chaplain’s Aide. While in Boy Scouts, Ryan achieved many certifications including BSA Lifeguard, CPR Certification, Firem’n Chit and National Youth Leadership Training. He is an Ordeal member in the Shinnecock Lodge Nissequogue Chapter of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society and has been awarded all of the religious emblems of his Roman Catholic faith: Cub Scouts – Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei; Boy Scouts - Ad Altare Dei and the Pope Pius XII. In addition to being a Boy Scout, Ryan is also a Sea Scout with Ship 460 based out of Northport (where he earned the Apprentice and Ordinary Ranks) and part of Venture Crew 333 out of Nassau County
(where he earned his 3 year pin and the Bronze Award). Ryan attended Holy Family Regional School from pre-k through 4th grade. He then attended Commack Middle School where he earned the Golden Wildcat Award all three years. As a 2012 graduate of Chaminade High School, Ryan was active in many extracurricular activities while in school, including the Drama Club, Speech and Debate, Glee Club, Emmaus (a volunteer organization), Catholic League, Math Team, Chamber Ensemble, Sodality and Music Club. “Just the overall opportunity to be able to go to Chaminade was amazing because it was one of the only places where I could really let my talents shine, and skills that I have learned in scouting come out and be used,” said Ryan. Ryan will be attending Loyola University in Maryland in the fall and will be majoring in Psychology. He commented, “The skills and life lessons that I have learned through Boy Scouting will be ones that will stay with me forever. Scouting has shown me that no matter what, I should always be true to myself and do what is the best for everyone I encounter.” The newest Eagle Scout is the son of Andy and Venise Mulé-Glass, and brother of Kristen and Dan. The Glass family resides in Dix Hills.
Fall Fun In Huntington Huntington is the place to be this October starting with Columbus Day weekend. The 19th Annual Long Island Fall Festival, the area’s most anticipated community event, will be begin Friday evening, October 5th, opening at 3 p.m. with a carnival and international food court. There will be a phenomenal Battle of the Bands on the Chapin Stage in the evening and plenty of fun and festivities throughout the entire weekend. Family Fun Day
The South Huntington Education Foundation (SHEF) held their 9th Annual Family Fun Day under a picture perfect sky surrounded by the lush grounds of West Hills Day Camp. This fundraiser helps SHEF purchase many items not in the school budget that help support a quality educational experience for
the children in the South Huntington School District. This was perhaps the most successful family fun day in history with close to 700 in attendance. The heated pools and water slide are always a popular spot, but this year SHEF added something new that proved to be hugely successful- a dunk tank featuring principals Kathie Acker, Vito D’Elia,Steve Toto, and Anthony Ciccarelli. The students couldn’t be any more excited as they lined up for a shot at dunking their principal. And, last but definitely not least into the dunk tank
was new Schools Superintendent Dave Bennardo. The South Huntington community spread out over the camp grounds and enjoyed; boating, a nature center, deck hockey, miniature golf, bowling, tennis, swings, and playgrounds galore. Feeding the many families kept the grillers busy all day, as everyone enjoyed salads, soft drinks, hot dogs, hamburgers, and lot and lots of ice cream treats. SHEF would like to thank the community for their incredible support in making this day one to remember.

Students were then invited to watch one of two videos, based on their grade level. “The video was cool!” said Juliana, a kindergarten student in Mrs. Diver’s class. Juliana was referring to the movie Otto the Auto, a short film that used catchy songs to engage students and encourage them to be safe on the bus. After the film, students had the opportunity to exit the bus through the rear emergency exit door. In approximately 30 minutes, the young students were given a thorough overview of how to ride the bus safely. “It’s important to be safe on the bus,” continued Juliana. “If you aren’t safe, you can really get hurt.” Kay Heidt of Eastern Suffolk BOCES, who has presented this program in Harborfields for 29 years,
explained the benefits of presenting the program to the district’s youngest students. “The students in the primary school don’t have the benefit of the older kids acting as role models on the bus. The oldest students in this school are in second grade, so it is very important that at the beginning of their education we have the opportunity to instill the appropriate behaviors in them so that they are able to start out on the right foot. Those behaviors will then be reinforced each year until they become commonplace.” Oldest Map

During the week of September 10th, students of Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District enjoyed the annual visit from “Safety Sally.” Safety Sally arrived with her BOCES School Bus Safety Mobile Classroom and spent the week educating students in grades K-2 on how to be safe on or around a school bus. Students from every class entered the Mobile Classroom, where they discussed not only the danger zones around the bus but also the 10-step rule that requires students to take 10 steps away from the bus before they cross. Restoration Grant Awarded The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has received a $5,000 grant for the conservation treatment of a valuable seventeenth-century Dutch oil painting in its collection. The grant was made by the Conservation Treatment Grant Program of the Greater Hudson Heritage Network, a regranting agency of the New York State Council on the Arts. Stephanie Gress, the Vanderbilt's director of curatorial services, said
the painting, City of Boulogne by Hendrick Dubbels (1620-1676), is in “poor condition and in urgent need of restoration.” The work will be performed by the accomplished conservator Alexander Katlan of Flushing, NY. The painting, original to the collection of William K. Vanderbilt II, was treated last in 1986, Gress said. “The darkened varnish was cleaned and the painting was stabilized by adding a cloth lining to
the back of the canvas. The museum will provide matching funds to refurbish the ornate, gilt frame.” Little is known of Dubbels’s life, Gress said. He was born in Amsterdam in 1620 and worked as a painter of seascapes and winter landscapes from circa 1641 until his death in 1676. (Some historical sources list his lifespan as 1621-1707.) “A lot of Dubbels's work was attributed to another
artist and it is very rare to find his paintings in the United States,” she said. “Much of his work is in collections in Florence and London and in England's National Gallery. Our painting may be one of the few in this country.” Gress said the

Volunteers Honored
At the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature held on August 21st, Legislator Sarah Anker presented a proclamation to Operation Veronica volunteers for their tireless efforts in supporting the brave men and women who serve our country. Founded in 2005, Operation Veronica began with a small group of volunteers who wished to show their support for the servicemen and women
serving overseas. To date, the organization has shipped more than 26,000 handmade items including neck coolers that are used to keep soldiers cool in the 115 degree heat, and neck gators to provide warmth in winter. The group gathers at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Rocky Point to sew, pack and ship items to the soldiers. “Operation Veronica is a truly exceptional
organization that deserves be honored for their avid volunteerism,” said Legislator Anker. “They are a caring group of people who give of their time and talents to comfort the troops serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and Djibouti, Africa.” Operation Veronica has expanded their efforts to include Operation Backpack providing backpacks and school supplies to the children of Afghanistan.

Paul Allan, theatrical producer at the Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County, has been appointed to Suffolk County’s Citizens Advisory Board for the Arts (CAB). The CAB reviews and recommends policy for Suffolk, evaluates funding applications, attends various county arts events, helps develop programs to promote and enhance the arts, and reports its findings to the county legislature. “My family started the Gateway Playhouse in the early '50s. Throughout my
life, I have been surrounded by the arts and surrounded by theater,” Mr. Allan said. “Since 1980, I have served as Gateway’s producer, and my duties have contributed to my awareness of and contact with arts organizations in our county, across many disciplines. I feel that I can make a positive contribution to this board.” Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley) nominated Mr. Allan, a resident of Bellport Village, to
represent the 3rd Legislative District. “I want to thank Paul Allan for representing the 3rd Legislative District on the Citizens Advisory Board for the Arts,” Leg. Browning said. “Suffolk County has much to offer in cultural arts, and the Advisory board helps to promote and advance the arts for all the residents of Suffolk County. Paul’s expertise with theater for over 30 years will be a tremendous asset to the board.” Mr. Allan’s appointment was confirmed by the Suffolk County Economic Development & Energy Committee on Wed., Aug. 15, with Vice Chairperson Steve Stern (DHuntington, 16th L.D.), Majority Leader Duwayne Gregory (D-Amityville, 15th L.D.) and Legislators Thomas Climi (R-Bay Shore, 10th L.D.) and Lynn Nowick (RSmithtown, 13th L.D.) in attendance.

Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) will hold its 4th Annual Let’s Walk, Let’s Talk…Stepping Together To Prevent Suicide event on Sunday, September 30th on the Boardwalk at Riverside Blvd. in Long Beach. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of suicide, and destigmatizing the subject of suicide and spreading the word that “it’s okay to ask for help.” “Recent statistics about suicide underscore the importance of the Crisis Center’s 24/7 hotline for anyone to be able to access at critical times in their lives,” states Linda Leonard, Executive Director. “Our Walk is an opportunity for anyone who has been touched by suicide, either directly or indirectly, to talk openly about a subject that has, for too long, remained in the shadows.” Suicide and suicide prevention affects everyone: · For the first time since 1998, suicide is in the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S.; · It is the third leading cause of death for
