Competition Season Kickoff will also hold a special informational session for parents of participating students, during which they will learn about the organization, its mission and the importance of the robotics programs. Students and parents alike will also be treated to presentations from alumni, mentors and sponsors regarding the impact of the program on the local communities and businesses. Towards the close of the event, each team will then collect its kit of parts to construct a 120-pound robot over the six-week design and build period leading up to the FIRST Robotics Competition tournaments. The FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition season will once again kick off at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University. On Saturday, January 6th, 2018 at 9 a.m., FIRST Robotics Competition teams from across Long Island will gather in anticipation of learning about the forthcoming season’s robotics competition. Knowing only that this year’s theme is FIRST POWERUPSM, the local FIRST teams, and the more than 3,000 teams around the world, will receive this year’s game rules via NASA satellite transmission from FIRST headquarters in New Hampshire. sets of consecutive dates. Planned as a double header, these back-to-back regionals will be held April 9th to 11th and April 12th to 14th, 2018 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Each event will serve as a separate regional, with different teams competing in separate alliances and tournament rounds. Some of the teams set to participate in the local regionals will move on to compete at the 2018 FIRST Championship in Detroit. Leading up to the regionals, SBPLI students will work with engineering mentors to apply concepts of math and science learned in the classroom to build their robots. Students will also learn important concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and healthy competition. Many SBPLI students use these skills while pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies and careers. Over the years, FIRST students from Long Island received millions of dollars in scholarships for higher education. This year, students participating in Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. First Tech Challenge on “balancing stones.” FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries. Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. During all FIRST Tech Challenge tournaments, teams work in alliances with the goal of scoring more points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods, on a 12-by-12-foot playing field. Last weekend’s scrimmages were the first events in the 2017-2018 FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island. Long Island students will then use these robots to compete in Qualifier tournaments at Lynbrook High School (Sunday, January 7th, 2018); Center Moriches High School (January 13th-14th, 2018); and Sewanhaka High School (January 27th28th, 2018). Students will compete at these

Scholar Presents As part of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Educational Outreach Programs, students in school districts across Long Island conducted collaborative research on micrometeorites with Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) lead scientists Juergen Thieme, Paul Northrup, Aleida Perez and Vivian Stojanoff at the National Synchrotron Light Source II. Among the students who participated in the program was Bay Shore High School scholar Kevin Souhrada. Students collected potential micrometeorite samples and analyzed them using the Submicron Resolution X-ray Spectroscopy Beamline (SRX) and the TenderEnergy X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (TES) beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source II at BNL. These instruments are focused

on x-ray absorption and x-ray ﬂuorescence, imaging and spectroscopy. SRX beamline was utilized to generate maps depicting heavy elemental distribution, while the TES beamline was used to identify light elemental distribution within each sample. On October 30th, 2017, students presented a poster of some of their preliminary findings at the Synchrotron Environmental Science Symposium hosted by BNL. The research team of students, science teachers and scientists expects to continue an indepth analysis of the data collected at SRX and TES to identify elements and their relative concentrations in the samples collected. This project provides a mechanism for students to work alongside the world’s most experienced scientists in order to conduct inquiry-based research

projects. Students learned experimental design, execution, analysis, scientific writing and reporting. Analysis is being shared by the participating school districts with the intent of publication. The students would like to acknowledge the support of the staff of the National Synchrotron Light Source II and of the Office of Educational Programs at Brookhaven National Laboratory, specifically Dr. Lisa Miller, Ms. Gretchen Cisco, Mr. Ken White, Mr. Scott Bronson and Ms. Bernadette Uzzi. Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a ﬂoor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reﬂect. Each year is full of its own moments, ﬂeeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected

direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Register Now Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter is pleased to announce that taxpayers can now take advantage of the Town of Islip’s online tax payment system

beginning December 11th, 2017 and continuing through May 31th, 2018. Town of Islip residents will be able to make payments from 12:01 AM

in the morning beginning December 11th to 11:15 p.m. daily. The site will be off-line every evening for 45 minutes for routine site maintenance. The site will

close May 31st, which is the last date taxes can be paid directly to the Town. Over ten thousand residents have already signed up to utilize the new system, which aims to supplement office hours with an extended window of operation for the

convenience of public use. Those interested in paying their taxes online can register at tax.islipny.gov, or familiarize themselves with the system by visiting the Town’s website at www.islipny.gov. For additional questions or concerns regarding
