As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the
oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details
and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

As you are reading this, I have already found out my first college decision. Hopefully, I was accepted. Unfortunately, the odds are not in my favor. As a college that accepts a fraction of its applicants, my dream school is certainly not a guaranteed acceptance for me. As you can already tell, I am not willing to divulge the name, as I am afraid to jinx myself. As much as I want to attend that school, the ball is in their court. Early last year, I developed my love for the college. Hopefully, this love is not platonic. I sent in my application over two months ago, on my birthday. I have been
stressing out over their decision ever since. As I am writing this, mile marker zero is less than eighteen and a half hours away. Next week, you will be hearing if I made it in or not. It was a scary road, going from a kid to an adult in just a few months. During the summer, I knew that the time was approaching; but as soon as September hit, my college application game was kicked into overdrive. Hopefully, I will never have to apply to another college again. With any luck, I have already gotten into the school I have fallen in love with. There is no doubt in my

mind that this school is right for me. If only the admissions officers could read my articles, they would know just how interested I am. All of my hard work will boil down to one of two words in a letter from that college. I will be content wherever I end up attending, even though I will never be able to shake that possible feeling of rejection. Stay tuned...

Signature Theatre
On December 5th, 191 Bay Shore High School students were mesmerized by playwright August Wilson’s storytelling power as they watched Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s performance of “How I
Learned What I Learned” at the Signature Theatre in New York City. The Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund (BSSAEF) underwrote the entire cost of the trip so that students from African American
Studies, African American Literature, Journalism, Film Study, Critic’s Choice, and US History classes could enjoy a classic NYC theatre experience while examining Wilson’s body of work through various
lenses. One of BSSAEF’s founding members, Lillian Barbash, spoke about the importance of the trip, saying, “Seventeen years ago, attending the (Broadway) performance of Having Our Say had a profound effect on the students of Bay Shore and led to the formation of the BSSAEF. This year’s trip to the Signature Theater’s August Wilson play “How I Learned What I Learned” exposed students to another vibrant world available to them. Live theater, and interacting
with professional artists, widens their horizon beyond television, movies and computers. This should be an annual event.” Students were treated to a Q&A session with actor Santiago-Hudson after the show. He told the audience, “This show is about what the world held for August Wilson after he stepped out of his mother’s house, and what he found in his community. The lessons he learned in his own life helped him to become one of history’s greatest playwrights.” Santiago-Hudson went on
to say, “Use your stories. You can do anything you aspire to do.” One Bay Shore student, Kordell Hammond, summed it up best, when speaking about Santiago-Hudson’s performance. “It was truly inspiring, especially to me as a young black actor. I was awe-struck by his ability to tell August Wilson’s story and make it so relatable.” Thanks again to the BSSAEF for their tireless efforts to help expose Bay Shore students to the power and vibrancy of the arts.

FIRE SAFETY LESSON - The Bay Shore Schools/Great South Bay YMCA UPK program at Mary G. Clarkson School celebrated Fire Safety by having firefighters from the Bay Shore Fire Department come and visit with students. The firefighters taught the children about fire safety and the importance of knowing to “Stop, Drop and Roll.” Students also had the opportunity to sit inside a fire truck and see all of its equipment. WISHES COME TRUE - Islip Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr., recently participated in Macy’s National Believe Day, at a special presentation held at the Bay Shore Macy’s located at the South Shore Mall, where he was joined by representatives from the Make a Wish Foundation, the Bay Shore Fire Department and Macy’s in fulfilling the wish of 16 year-old Frank Diaz-Abreu, who has lung cancer. It was Frank’s wish to go to the Dominican Republic to visit his grandparents, a wish that was fulfilled and enhanced when Macy’s, provided makeovers for his mother and sister; winter and summer clothing for Frank and his immediate family; a party in his honor in Macy’s VIP room, and gifts for Frank to bring his family when he visits them in the Dominican Republic.
On December 7th, over 400 attendees participated in Kids’ Day, a fun-filled event held as a tribute to long time Bay Shore resident Corey Swinson. The day featured free activities for children of all ages and focused on promoting wellness, linking two core aspects of Corey’s life - his love of children and physical education and sports. Kids’ Day organizers agreed that providing the Bay Shore community, especially Bay Shore’s children, with an opportunity to enjoy a variety of physical and interactive activities was something Corey would have supported. The day opened with a welcome message and announcement regarding the presentation of a bill, put forth in Albany by Assemblyman Phil Ramos, to rename the Fifth Avenue Bridge in Bay Shore the Corey J. Swinson Memorial Bridge. The children were then told about the activities available throughout the day, including basketball, using the wellness center treadmills, playing volleyball, or creating a loom bracelet to give away this holiday season. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the halls of Bay Shore Middle School came alive with children and their parents shuttling between these engaging options.

Kids Day Over 65 volunteers donated their time, supplies and services to ensure the event’s success and several Bay Shore employees and community residents supervised activities, which also included Dance-Dance Revolution,
Sparkles’ beautiful face-painting designs and eyes lit up as she twisted balloons into flowers and animals. One child was heard saying, “You’re an expert at this.” DJ Drago provided music for the duration of the event. The Swinson family attended Kids’ Day and expressed their gratitude for the event. Superintendent of Bay Shore Schools Dr. Salmon and Bay Shore Board of Education President Mary Louise Cohen were also in attendance. One of Corey’s brothers shared that this event was part of the healing process, and seeing the number of people gathered demonstrated Corey’s impact on the community. Bilal Polson, one of the event’s organizers, expressed his appreciation to the Swinson family and all attendees for their support. Since Corey’s untimely passing, numerous events have been held, the next of which is planned for Sunday, December 15th, itself deemed Corey Swinson Day by the Town of Islip. Gardiner Manor School 4th grade students baked pies as part of their study of New York State’s natural resources and industries. Students had learned that one of our state’s major industries is agriculture apples and pumpkins being two of its major cash crops. Some Gardiner Manor classes baked apples pies, while others baked pumpkin. Each class received donations from
class parents for the necessary ingredients and students learned about following a recipe by using utensils for measuring. At the final tally, Gardiner Manor School 4th grade students donated a whopping thirty-nine pies to local families in need, pies to be enjoyed on Thanksgiving Day by families that would have otherwise had none. Several local supermarkets

These students were selected by their physical education teachers and/or directors according to the following criteria: physical education achievement, scholastic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA on 4.0 scale), outstanding
character, physical education leadership, scholastic participation and leadership and efforts as a role model. Over 750 people attended the dinner, including families, teachers and district administrators. Pet Toy Donations
The Islip Animal Shelter’s Second Annual Holiday Toy Drive brought in double the amount of donations over last year’s event. Families across Long Island dropped by on Saturday to place treats and toys in the 90+ holiday stockings that hang on each animal’s cage. This year’s event was sponsored by Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue Inc., the shelter’s new non-profit 501c3 volunteer organization. The volunteers of Live. Love.Bark and the shelter employees worked together to raise more
than 200 gallons of toys for both dogs and cats. “When our residents come together to donate to our animals, especially during the holiday season, it is truly heart warming,” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “Everyone deserves to be happy for the holidays and that includes all of our animals waiting for their forever homes.” Along with toys and treats, more than 300 pounds of dry food and 20 gallons of canned food, an abundance of Milkbone boxes, and roughly 10
gallons of collars and leashes were also donated. Also collected were bottles of laundry detergent, dish soap, towels, sheets, blankets and food bowls. Live.Love.Bark also raised a monetary donation of $354.00, which will be used to purchase items from the shelter’s Amazon Wish List that were not yet donated. CHRISTMAS PAGEANT - Saint Patrick School had a Christmas celebration on Wednesday, December 11th, at Monsignor Purick Hall in Bay Shore. To start off the night, the Saint Patrick School Choir sang some lively Christmas songs. Following the choir was a great performance from the school band. At the end of the night, the 3rd and 4th grade came together for their annual Nativity Pageant. The 4th graders told the story of Jesus’ birth, while the 3rd graders did a wonderful job as the chorus, singing classic Christmas songs.
