Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown

HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. Parents joined the scholars in the them, scholars had to build a nest that could be picked up without falling apart. classroom to help complete the projects.

INTO A GOOD BOOK - Scholars in Mrs. Fields’ class at Brook Avenue School EXPLORING SCIENCE - Scholars at Bay Shore High School completed science are falling into good books. After completing independent reading, they wrote reviews stations to help improve their science literacy. At each table, they faced a different task, about the books to share with their friends. including exploring concepts and creating vocabulary maps.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORT - There are many school programs, events and activities that would not be possible without the dedicated and civic-minded scholars in the REINFORCING LESSONS - Scholars on Team 63 at Bay Shore Middle School are Bay Shore High School Interact Club. Each of the scholars in this club signs up to making sure they understand the material being taught. They recently reinforced a help in whatever way they can. The Family Engagement program is just one of the science lesson by taking quizes on the program Quizizz, using laptops from one of the many activities they work to support. They provide on-site babysitting, assistance with school’s laptop carts. young scholar activities, serve food and provide language translation.

VISITING HISTORY - The 9th grade Humanities scholars at Bay Shore High School had a chance to view history first-hand. They traveled to the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia to discover the story behind the authentic Terracotta Warriors and the days of China’s First Emperor. They viewed the ten life-size warriors, along with over 170 other artifacts from Ancient China. Thank you to the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund for helping to fund the trip.

MEMORIAL DEDICATION - Congressman Pete King recently joined with Village of Brightwaters Mayor Joe McDermott and Ex-Chief of the Bay Shore Fire Department Robert Hulse at the Dedication of the Brightwaters Veterans Memorial located at the Head of the Grand Canal. Congressman King noted that talking with the firefighters, community leaders and Veterans from World War II, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan Wars was truly inspiring and reflected the essence of American patriotism.

Individuals from AHRC Suffolk’s Day Habilitation programs and the Suffolk County Parks Department formed a unique partnership to help breathe life back into the Meadowedge Greenhouse Cooperative located on the West Sayville Golf Course. On December 12th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn paid a visit to the facility and the individuals working there. The greenhouse is open to the public Monday – Friday 10:30am – 1:30pm for all your holiday plant needs. All the proceeds from plant sales help support this program. Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park get ample opportunity to flex their creative muscles while developing teambuilding skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group. Mrs. Judy Keeler, veteran SSCM Middle School teacher uses a studentcentered reading strategy called Literature Circles. Student teams work together to select a book that they will read and then each student plays a specific role in each “Lit Circle,” allowing the group to work together to analyze

the story line and present their take on the piece of literature they’ve read. Mrs. Keeler introduces the concepts to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, by 8th grade, the students’ presentations gain some serious momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are

in the reading process, something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work - life skills they will take with them for the long haul.
