volunteers - many of whom have served in the armed forces or who have family in the service - they were able to create care packages that included water flavoring, packages of mac & cheese, canned beef stew, instant mashed potatoes, popcorn, candy, writing paper and pens, and feminine hygiene products. The care packages were assembled over several days at American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon. Funds were raised to mail them to a specially-created address at the headquarters

of the 48th Fighter Wing in England, where they will be forwarded to their units’ base in Afghanistan. Local politicians from the Town of Babylon came out to support the drive and assist in the project. The Town of Babylon presented Post 1634 and the Sagtikos District with a proclamation recognizing their service and good deed to the service and the community. The district plans to do this annually, with the hopes of sending 500 care packages to an army unit overseas in 2014.

Boy Scouts of America Scouts and volunteers from 11 Scouting units in the Sagtikos District of the Suffolk County Council, BSA teamed up with American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon and Babylon Legislators, to raise funds and send 492 care packages to the 48th Fighter Wing in Afghanistan this holiday season. There are so many tasks on the checklist that I call my daily routine that it is hard to cram them all into a twentyfour hour time period. Being a student is a fulltime job. Sure, I don’t have to worry about bills, and I don’t have many major responsibilities; but sometimes the stress is too much. As much as I enjoy going to school and being as involved as I am, there comes a time when I just need a break. Thankfully, in just a few days it will be Christmas Vacation.

Over two weeks off with no responsibilities. By then, I will be all done applying to college. The ball will be in their court. At that point, there will be nothing I can do but wait and hope my dream school makes the right decision. Once Christmas Vacation rolls around, I won’t have to worry about anything. I will finally be able to focus on having a great senior year. There is plenty of time to discover what career is right for me. For now, I am content just being a dedicated student, and more importantly, a happy kid.

Savor The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to finish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss

is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Seems like an awful lot of effort doesn’t it? This is why, when everyone else is busy ripping down the Christmas decorations on December 26th, I say wait. Savor it a little longer. Extend the festivities. You put all that time and effort into preparing for the occasion – might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

This holiday season, Bay Shore Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society members, under the guidance of Ms. Mary Lapid, baked items for the Bay Shore Historical Society’s annual Snowﬂake Sale. Facilitated by Gail Farrell, retired Bay Shore Middle School teacher, the cookies, cakes and cupcakes were delivered to the Historical Society for their weekend event, all proceeds of which support

for the Historical Society but volunteered during their morning advisory and lunch periods in an effort to collect donations for Bay Shore families in need this holiday season. A big thanks to these Honor Society members who have been working together to serve their community not only this month, but all throughout the year.

K-9 Visit

Last month, members of the TSA K-9 inspection unit from JFK airport visited Gardiner Manor students in Mr. Dooley’s classroom for an informative and exciting presentation. This visit helped students learn about dogs that save lives. One student, Ethan Scott, made the class visit possible after expressing his interest in the topic to his father. Their handlers, Maya and Rene, discussed their experiences working with these amazing dogs, as well as training methods and specific procedures, and demonstrated how the dogs use their keen sense of smell to detect possible threats. The experience became even more memorable after one of the students learned that the dog Iiken was named after a close family friend who had lost their life during the tragic events of September 11th. Iiken’s handler was truly moved by this revelation

and gave the student a bracelet he wore in honor of the close family friend. This was an unforgettable moment for the students, handlers, and adults in attendance. Toy Run A Success

In the true holiday spirit, readers, employees and editors of Full Throttle Magazine gathered hundreds of toys and gifts that were then donated to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Sunday, December 8th. Roaring down Nicolls Road in the cold weather, over 50 Long Island motorcycle riders led by

WBAB’s ‘Fingers’ and escorted by numerous local fire department engines embarked on a 15-mile mission Sunday morning to deliver hundreds of toys to the young patients who anxiously awaited their arrival. Lee and Greg Sheridan, owners of Full Throttle Magazine, have organized this event for the past four

years in efforts to make the children’s stay in the hospital a little easier. Gifts and toys were collected during the publications Winter Wonderland event on December 4th, which was hosted at 89 North in Patchogue. This year they were joined by the Sons of Italia Motorcycle Club and several local Fire Departments.

Spreading Holiday Cheer

It’s usually team spirit that the Stony Brook University Men’s Basketball team brings to the court each game, but during a special holiday visit to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Monday, December 9th, there was a different type of spirit and cheer roaming the halls. The team took a break from practice to come mingle with some of the youngest Seawolves fans in the pediatric emergency department, and pediatric acute care unit. With

presents in hand, the players shot some hoops with these little patients, took photos and had some fun with the kids in the playroom. The team’s efforts brought exactly what they hoped for, smiling young faces and holiday joy. During the team’s visit, coach Steve Pikiell presented L. Reuvan Pasternak, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Hospital and Vice President for Health Systems, Stony Brook Medicine, with a

Stony Brook University Athletics ‘family-4-pack’ of tickets to each SBU Men’s Basketball home game to kids and their families who are currently admitted or who have been discharged from the Children’s Hospital. Coach Pikiell is no stranger to generous donations; he and his family donated $25,000 in May of 2012 to Stony Brook Children’s that was then matched by an anonymous donor, raising the value to $50,000.

For the second year in a row, the Rotary Club of the Moriches presented Breakfast with Santa, which took place December 8th inside the dining hall of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Nearly 300 people attended the event. Proceeds went to benefit the camp. Guests were served pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee by members of the Moriches Rotary Club and the Interact Clubs from Eastport South Manor, Center Moriches and East Moriches. Following the

breakfast, everyone had the opportunity to meet Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus and get their pictures taken with them. In addition, guests took part in a 50/50 raffle and raffles for a chance to win a variety of prizes that included children’s toys and Christmas decorations. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help

these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe quality program of camping, recreation and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Local artist Todd Arnett has been using his creativity on the grounds of Camp-Pa-Qua-Tuck by creating a wooden sculpture near Kaler’s Pond. The unnamed sculpture was carved out of an elevenfoot tall, 800-pound black cherry tree and made into a Phoenix. It was placed on a 5,000-pound illuminated base on November 10 at the camp. The sculpture was inspired by the ideas of Gail Saetta and Matt Russell, Bradstock Music Festival volunteers who have been organizing the festival at the camp annually and have been installing lights

throughout the camp for the past two years. When it looked like Bradstock would no longer continue because another music venue was not able to present the festival any longer, Camp Pa-QuaTuck offered to hold it on their grounds three years ago. During that time, Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell became acquainted with the camp’s staff and volunteers and learned about its mission. They then began donating lights and installing them on the camp’s grounds. “One spring day when we were installing lights, Matt and I thought that adding something new to the

camp would be a good idea in order to stimulate more creativity,” Ms. Saetta stated. “We thought about different types of objects and eventually, decided on a large sculpture.” Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell proposed the idea to Bridget Costello, the camp’s director. Ms. Costello concurred that an innovative, artistic sculpture would enhance the camp. They approached Mr. Arnett in June with ideas to incorporate a sculpture into the camp after hearing about his immaculate wood carving abilities from a close friend. Mr. Arnett, Ms. Saetta

and Mr. Russell began exchanging ideas about what type of sculpture to create. After many conversations, the idea of a phoenix emerged. “The Phoenix sculpture symbolizes the rebirth of the music festival at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck and symbolizes the strength of the children that attend the camp,” says Ms. Saetta. Although the sculpture is not yet completed, it is coming together as feathers beneath a globe with a forceful vortex above it. Essentially, it’s pushing a Phoenix to fly higher. For the finishing touches, musical notes will be added around the

The sculpture is expected to be fully completed soon, although Mr. Arnett is not sure of an exact date yet because of weather conditions. Mr. Arnett has been wood carving for over 30 years and has had a sculpture business on Long Island for ten years. “This is definitely one of my largest sculptures I’ve done and I’m ecstatic to make one for the camp,” says Mr. Arnett. “I love

Cardiology Center Support

The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $90,000 to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to support the hospital’s cardiology services. This gift brought the Guilds’ 2013 donations to a total of $250,000 for various programs, including pediatrics, cancer, intensive care services and the Emergency Department. Taking Top Honors

Suffolk County Community College Culinary School student Satoko Matthews of East Patchogue whipped up a delectable dish to claim first place in the school’s Battle for the Beach Competition. The students’ challenge was to take a mystery basket of ingredients and turn them into a dish that was judged on creativity,

presentation, and taste with minimal time to plan and execute its delivery – similar to the reality television show Chopped, airing on The Food Network. The winning dish, a mouthwatering lime marinated chicken with a baked artichoke topped with a lime aioli, roasted potato hash and sautéed brocollini was Matthews’ ticket to a seven-night stay at the Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, Florida (including roundtrip airfare and ground transportation) and the opportunity to work under the supervision of Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort’s Executive Chef.
