HALLOWEEN SPIRIT - The students in Mrs. Bergendorff’s fifth grade class at Gardiner Manor School helped to make Halloween a little more fun for a deployed service member. The students created cards containing drawings and jokes to send to the service member, currently deployed to Afghanistan. She sent a photo back to the students to thank them for their cards.
Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so
much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.
And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

Various insurance plans protect individuals from financial calamity. Insurance works by requiring policy holders to pay a premium. In the event of an accident or incident, a claim can be filed and the insurance company will reimburse the person for expenses, minus the deductible. Health insurance is one type of insurance that people have to manage their health and well-being. There’s also another, perhaps lesser-known insurance that can prove invaluable. It is called longterm care insurance. Long-term care insurance, or LTCI, is an insurance product that is found primarily in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. LTCI generally covers assisted living needs, home care,
hospice care, adult daycare and other requirements of senior living and/or health management. People who invest in LTCI are planning ahead for the times when they may no longer be able to care for themselves without assistance. LTCI will help offset the ever-rising costs associated with specialized senior housing and nursing facilities.

Medication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Failure to properly manage medications can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians’ instructions.

Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips. Keep a running list of medications. Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-the-
counter medications and any supplements and herbs. Provide a copy to any new doctors you visit and any new pharmacies you patronize. Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management. Organizers
have daily slots and may also differentiate between nighttime and daytime medications.
Understand why each medication is being prescribed. Ask your pharmacist and doctor to explain why each medication is prescribed. This information should be printed on the prescription label. Some drugs designed for one symptom may actually be used to treat other issues as well. Ask for help. Some seniors may benefit from friendly reminders from a loved one regarding when to take certain medications, especially if they need to take multiple doses
throughout the day. Cognitively impaired seniors may require the services of a visiting nurse or another caregiver. Recognize that not all medications are right for seniors. The American Geriatrics Society maintains a list of medications that older adults should avoid or take with extreme caution. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications. Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor. Proper medication management can help seniors avoid drug-related accidents or worse.

to see, touch and sit in a real fire truck. At the end of the visit, the firefighters said their goodbyes and reminded everyone to practice good fire safety and change their smoke detector batteries!
WALL OF HONOR - Students at Gardiner Manor School continue to honor the memory and legacy of the victims and responders of the September 11th attacks. One of the main hallways of the school features a wall on which students can share a good deed they will undertake.
PUMPKIN LESSONS - Students in Mrs. Lentini’s kindergarten class at Fifth Avenue School know that pumpkins make learning more fun! On Halloween, the centers that the students routinely use for learning were transformed into pumpkin-themed centers. Among other activities, students were able to learn new, pumpkin-related words.
OUTDOOR LEARNING - On Thursday, November 10th, South Country School held a ribbon cutting for its new outdoor learning space. The gazebo was made possible by a generous donation from the Ryan Family. It will provide a space for students to conduct science experiments, complete art projects and compose poetry, among other activities, while surrounded by the very things they are learning about. Thank you to the Ryan Family!

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by local community groups and Town employees at Casamento Park today, where almost 600 Thanksgiving baskets were distributed to groups that will aid the less fortunate in our town. In addition, the Town purchased more than 584 turkeys through funding provided by Islip Food for Hope. “Every year our employees donate their time and supplies to help provide an authentic holiday experience for
families in our community who are facing hardship,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I want to also thank the Islip Food for Hope Organization, led by MaryAnn Pfeiffer, for their tireless efforts to end hunger in our town.” Fifty of the donated turkeys came from Rechler Equity Partners, in conjunction with the Town’s Foreign Trade Zone. “We are proud to support the Food for Hope Program and its efforts to provide those in need

Students in Mrs. Lentini’s kindergarten class at Fifth Avenue School recently learned about the voting process. On the eve of Election Day, the class held its very own Compliment Party Election. When students receive compliments from other
teachers or staff in the building, they get a pom-pom in the class Compliment Jar. When the jar is full, the class holds a Compliment Party. The Compliment Party Election was held to decide what type of party the class would hold – a pajama day, an afternoon movie or a
combination of both. The students filled out voter registration cards, lined up to vote, filled out their ballots and received an “I Voted” badge. When the votes were tallied, the pajama day/afternoon movie combination won in a landslide!

to families in need, especially at this time of year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness. The food items contributed by classrooms throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish
Outreach Program in Deer Park. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island, where across the county, combined parish ministries include thousands of volunteers and serve as many as 75,000 people in NEW HEIGHTS - Students in the project adventure classes at Bay Shore High School need each year. recently completed the catwalk activity.
