Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and ﬂitting to and fro, and the

occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

Class of 2016’s Peter Liegey has likely run out of space on his walls for all the honors, awards and scholarships he received as he exited the hallowed halls of Saints Cyril and Methodius upon graduating.

Always an active student, Peter participated in School Band, Long Island Honor Band, SSCM Cross Country and Basketball teams, was a member of the Distinguished Scholars program, Gifted and Talented program, and the Shakespeare Festival performances each year. Within the parish, Peter has been an Altar Server, was active in the CYO Travel and Intramural basketball teams. He coached and refereed in the CYO Intramural Basketball program, volunteered at SSCM’s Family Festival, Breakfast with Santa and even worked in the kitchen during SSCM Bingo nights. Adding to his already busy

schedule, Peter played Flag Football with the Knights of Columbus and baseball with Deer Park’s Little League Team. It’s no surprise that a young man who can juggle this much at once managed to earn an SSCM Parents Association Scholarship, the Ryan T. Horodnicki Memorial Scholarship, an SSCM Senior Club Scholarship and based on his performance on Co-Op testing, he claimed a St. John the Baptist Scholar Incentive Award. Ever grateful for his days at SSCM, Peter is now attending St. John the Baptist High School and we wish him every blessing for continued success!

CURRICULUM MAPPING - On October 28th, teachers at the 3rd and 4th grade levels at South Country School took part in curriculum mapping. This allows the teachers across the entire grade level to work together to create lessons on particular topics. At this session, 3rd grade teachers mapped out lessons on opinion/argument writing while 4th grade teachers worked on a personal narrative unit.

MIXING IT UP - Mix It Up at Lunch Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. That is just what our scholars at Gardiner Manor School did on Friday, October 28th. Each class was assigned table numbers and children made new friends during lunch while Mrs. Domanick and Mrs. Partridge sang and danced through the cafeteria. Everyone was happy and enjoyed meeting new peers! Thank you to our two teachers who organized this day and made lunchtime fun time!

Budget Approved Recently, the Islip Town Board voted 4-1 to approve the 2017 operating budget, which includes an increase in taxes of $4 per month for the average homeowner. Dozens of residents turned out at the Budget Hearing November 10th to voice their opinions, the majority of whom expressed their support of the modest $48 per year increase. While it is always the goal not to raise taxes, and to make every effort to stay under the State tax cap, it was not possible this year. This

action was necessitated initially by the fact that one fire department and two ambulance companies have long-standing major projects finally beginning in 2017 that required us to pierce the cap. Average residents will see an increase of $4 per month or $48 annually based on a home assessed at $400,000. This $4 a month will ensure that the Town is able to continue to plow and salt the roads in a timely manner, pave roads, repair potholes, provide
