Spookfest

BRIDGE BUILDING - Students in Mrs. Godfrey’s fifth grade class at South Country School were engaged in a team building STEM activity that challenged them to construct a bridge made of gumdrops and toothpicks. The bridge was to span a 6-inch gorge and the challenge was to see whose design could support the most books. Teams were engaged in a process of brainstorming, designing, building, evaluating, and refining their designs.

A great time was had by all thanks to our PFA moms, who spent the afternoon decorating and preparing a spooky night for our awesome students! Spookfest brought out

all the witches, superheros and princesses to walk the haunted hallway and practice their screechy screams! Gardiner Manor scholars were entertained by

Dennison D’Natale, danced to their favorite songs, wrapped one another up as mummies and visited the fun stations!

Brook Avenue students will be better prepared in an emergency after listening to our guests from United Way and PSEG and their favorite Sesame Street characters teach them how to prepare. Children learned about

emergency helpers, knowing not only their first and last name but the names of their parents or caretakers and how to pack an emergency pack as well. Students were sent home with a guide to share with their families,

as well as a hard hat and certificate for participation in the assembly. A special thank you to a Bay Shore parent, Mrs. McNulty for offering this opportunity to our students!

What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.

Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

As part of the Class of 1966’s 50th Class Reunion in June 2016, returning alumni helped to raise money to give back to future Bay Shore graduates. Each year, the Bay Shore High School Alumni Association encourages

graduating students to stay involved in the community and to help others when they can. Part of giving back has included generous donations to the Association’s scholarship fund, which allowed the awarding of 12 scholarships to the Class of 2016.
