Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature. Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with
record snowfall yet again. Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end. Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’. In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted
house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day. For now, anyway. And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax. There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list. It’s not a race. It’s about putting some thought into it and enjoying the experience.

She said, “There is a big change in how we think about learning. It used to be content based. We have shifted things from what students can do, to benchmarking what students want to be. We want them to go into the
world using the skills they learned and be digital citizens.” IFU uses an inquiry and learning curriculum research model that provides active learning through a spiral framework of instruction. As students wonder, investigate, synthesize, express, and review, they become WISER. Zdrojewski created Wiser the Owl, a children’s book that incorporates the cycle of inquiry and learning for
her elementary students. Mary uses songs, board games, and a variety of other strategies in her school library that create engaging and meaningful learning. At the SLS meetings, attendees played Librarian Bingo and made “Wonder Cans” - a craft project that Mary created. She said, “The Wonder Can is a device I use to spark questions and investigation. I hope all the librarians take away practical information
from this presentation and think, ‘I can do that in my library.’” School librarian Teri from the Babylon Elementary School said, “I am going to go back to my school and use all of this, and I know that for a fact. The activities that Mary is showing us are simple, easy to do, and very engaging. I really like the Wiser the Owl book. She created it so I don’t have to rephrase it and the students love to sing.”

Last fall, the Bay Shore Schools’ Teacher of the Month initiative was launched in order to acknowledge members of the district’s amazing staff who go above and beyond each day to educate and enrich the lives of their students. This year, Mr. Thomas Kain of TD Bank Residential Mortgages (www.tdbank.

Zakia Eleazer of Bay Shore was recently selected to participate in the 2014 Miss Teen New York pageant competition that will take place on Sunday November 16th, Zakia learned of her acceptance into this year’s competition when the pageant announced their selections following interviewing in the local New York area. Zakia submitted an application and took part in an interview session that was conducted by this year’s New York Pageant
Coordinator. Zakia will be competing, for her share of thousands of dollars in prizes and specialty gifts that will be distributed to contestants. Zakia will be competing in the Miss Teen ivision, one of four divisions that will have young ladies ages of 7 and 19 competing in modeling routines, which include casual wear and formal wear. Most important, Zakia will display her personality and interviewing skills while interviewing with this year’s New York judging panel. Personality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of competition. If Zakia were to win the title of Miss Teen New York, she would represent New York and the surrounding communities at the National Competition that will take place in Orlando, Florida. Over $30,000.00
in prizes and awards will be presented at the National Competition while each winner enjoys this expense paid trip of five nights and six days in Orlando, Florida. Community businesses, organizations, and private individuals will assist Zakia in participating in this year’s competition by becoming an official sponsor to her. Through sponsorship, each contestant receives all the necessary training, rehearsals, and financial support which will allow Zakia to become a very confident and wellprepared contestant in this year’s New York Pageant. Bay Shore’s 2014 Homecoming, complete with a parade of all the town’s football and cheerleading squads, the High School Band, Homecoming Court, (King: Kordell Hammond, Queen: Amy Paulino, who also kicked off the game signing the National Anthem together for the large crowd) the Bay Shore Fire Department and Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Squad, was a huge success. The four High School classes showed their pride and spirit through colorful displays while the Athletic Sponsors provided a wonderful celebration
on the field, including free hot dogs and cookies, bounce houses, various football related challenges, demonstrations by the High School Robotics team and live music. During half-time, a presentation was made to the five Rutger’s Trophy teams (1944, 1951, 1969, 1983 and 1984) honoring their success and presenting them with replica Rutger’s Trophies. Several member of the ‘69, ‘83 and ‘84 teams, including Department Chair of Athletics Ted Nagengast (‘87), were on hand to celebrate the day at Bay Shore.
Additionally, several former football coaches, including Jim Sagl, High School Physical Education teacher and former Head Coach, were in attendance and acknowledged for their previous work and commitment to the football program. Special thanks go out to the Bay Shore Athletic Sponsors, Bay Shore High School Band, Bay Shore Middle School Football Team, Bay Shore Youth Football, Bay Shore Youth Cheerleaders, Bay Shore Fire Departments and the Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Squad.

Healthy Eating Day National Eating Healthy Day is Wednesday, November 5th, and the American Heart Association wants people to listen the advice of generations of mothers: Eat your vegetables (and fruit). Americans typically consume about half their recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables. The American Heart Association recommends eating eight or more fruit and vegetable servings every day. For an average adult consuming 2,000 calories daily, that
means about 4 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables a day. According to the American Heart Association, fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals and fiber, and low in saturated fat and calories. Most fruits and vegetables also have no or little sodium, and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help you control your weight and your blood pressure. While heart disease and stroke are leading causes of death and disability for all Americans, more than 80 percent of risk factors
for heart disease and stroke are preventable through behaviors like making better food choices, getting regular exercise, keeping a healthy weight and not smoking. The AHA is offering a free fruits and vegetable resource guide to help people incorporate more fruits and vegetables in their diet.
