Moving Right Along By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic

delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing

where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective

college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) held its 33rd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational on September 23rd and brought in more than $200,000 to support its lifesaving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 170 golfers teedoff at The Creek and Piping Rock Clubs in Locust Valley and 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Key sponsors included: The Jobin Organization; The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation; BaumEssex Manufacturing; Seafield Center; Moritt Hock & Hamroff; Murray Hill Suites; Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty; Hirshleifers; and Astoria Federal Savings. Former WABC News Sports Anchor Scott Clark, who served as event emcee and auctioneer, began the Diamonds in the Rough Reception and Dinner at The Creek. He spoke of his personal experiences with alcoholism and addressed the importance of the services LICADD provides to children and families on Long Island. On Sunday, September 29th, the Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce and BID organized its second “Cash Mob” to support one of Bay Shore’s Main Street treasures, Serious Chocolate, in Bay Shore’s downtown. On a gloriously sunny day, residents, fans and supporters of Bay Shore assembled on Main Street, committed to spending ten dollars in cash at the store. Chamber President

Donna Periconi introduced this new initiative last year to boost Bay Shore’s economy. The first “Cash Mob” was organized to support the once newly restored Ace Hardware and Variety Store. Mrs. Periconi explained, “Throughout our country, communities are banding together to organize ‘Cash Mobs’ to help small, local businesses survive in these tough economic times. Besides offering financial

support, these events give residents an opportunity to show a chosen business how important it is to the community. We can have fun while doing a good thing.” Having notched two successful events, the Chamber will hopefully plan another “Cash Mob” in the New Year. Waterfowl Program The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding its 16th Annual Youth Waterfowl Program, open to young hunters on Long Island ages 12 to 15, on November 2nd and November 9th and 10th, Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The program is a collaboration with the New York Conservation Officers Association; Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation; Shikar Safari Club International; Ducks Unlimited; and South Shore Waterfowlers Association. The Youth Waterfowl Program, an instructional course, is set for November 2nd. Youth Waterfowl Days, which are specially designated hunting days, are set for November 9th and 10th. The Youth Waterfowl Program is a special event

to help junior hunters prepare for and participate in the Youth Waterfowl Days. The program includes instruction in: · Hunting ethics and regulations · Waterfowl identification · Firearms safety review · Retriever and decoy use · Cold water survival and boating safety · Trap shooting Certified sportsman education instructors, as well as DEC environmental conservation officers (ECOs), will guide participants through the program and help youth hunters become part of the long tradition of waterfowl hunting on Long Island. All new applicants must attend an instructional day at Hubbard County Park in Flanders on November 2nd, which will qualify them for the option of hunting at Hubbard County Park in Flanders or Southaven County Park in Yaphank on November

9th, and anywhere hunting is allowed on November 10th. Participants must be 12 to 15 years of age by November 9th, have completed a hunter education course by November 2nd, possess a junior (small game) hunting license by November 9th and be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP). The contest for middle- (grades 6 through 8) and highschool students (grades 9 through 12) provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the rich heritage of Hispanic Americans. This year’s essay question is: “Name a Latino, past or present, with whom you would choose to spend a day and explain why.” “Cablevision is delighted to sponsor its Hispanic Heritage Month student essay contest for the sixth consecutive year,” said Cablevision Vice President of Public Affairs Jen Ostrager. “Power to Learn is proud to promote the Hispanic community’s diverse cultural heritage.” Olympusat, Inc. This September, Gardiner Manor School kicked off the new school year with a successful week-long Book Fair. School librarians Ms. Darch and Ms. Smyth, with assistance from Ms. Abrams, facilitated the fair which raised $1,275 for the library. These funds will be used to purchase books and prizes for the GMS Reading Counts Program. Reading Counts

is a software program available to all Gardiner Manor students during library class. They are encouraged to participate in the program by reading designated Reading Counts books and taking a short quiz afterwards. If successful, students are awarded points. The more books they read, the more points they earn. For every 50 points a student earns, they are awarded a

School Book Fair paperback book of their choice and a prize. Prizes include ribbons, reading bracelets, pins, medals and T-shirts. In addition, students’ names are read on the morning announcements. Each year, the library awards more than 400 books and prizes. GMS asks parents to encourage their children to read each and every day.

Rotary Fundraiser On September 21st, The Rotary Club of Bay Shore hosted its 2nd annual Fall Kickoff Celebration fundraiser at the former estate of Hawthorne (Happy) Scully, now operated by the Seatuck Environmental Association in Islip (www.seatuck.org). The event, which raised over $5,500 to help fund various local literacy programs, Oikocredit micro-financing loans and Rotary International’s “Eradicate Polio” program,

was attended by more than 130 enthusiastic guests. A live auction saw participants bidding on a private Long Island Ducks box for 20 people, donated by Ducks owner Frank Boulton, and a 50/50 raffle awarded one individual $600 in cash. Additional winners took home baskets filled with wonderful prizes such as a Coach bag, wine and fine liquor, and passes for local vineyard tours. Recently retired Bay Shore High

School Music Teacher Ted Scalzo, who was honored at the event, spoke about the good work Rotary does in the community and expressed his gratitude to both Bay Shore Schools and his wife for allowing him the gift of working with so many amazing students over his 35 year tenure. Guests also enjoyed live music by jazz trio Monk for President. Congratulations to The Rotary Club of Bay Shore’s

Planning Committee, headed by Club President Mark Velapoldi and Vice President Thomas Kain, on an extremely successful event.
