The 3rd annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk at Jones Beach to raise funds and awareness on the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is held each year to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdoes at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The parents and children of John Brower, Jr. formed the foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction.

They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue fighting addiction. We will continue with these walks and our other foundation activities until we see a marked improvement

Over 50 Fair a Success “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+” is the slogan of the Over 50 Fair, and this year the event was overflowing with attendees. Over 700 Baby Boomers, seniors and those a bit younger enjoyed popular exhibitors from past years and many new additions. The Fair is recognized as Long Island’s largest “Over 50” expo. This year’s event included several reality TV favorites. Kimberly Sherbach of Wantagh was one of the bachelorettes on the 19th edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series, “The Bachelor,” in 2015. She discussed what it was like to be on the TV show and also taught a yoga class.

Chef Maria Petridis of Maria’s Mediterranean Seafood & Grill in Bayside, did a Greek cooking demo that was entertaining and informative. Chef Maria was crowned a “Chopped Champion” on Food Network’s Chopped in December. Chef Sophie Bravo of Food Network’s Chopped Junior taught a rainbow meringue class as well as a cake decorating with fondant class. Sophie is a delightful 11 year-old. In addition, Bobby Goldman, author of the current off-Broadway show Curvy Widow spoke to an interested crowd. Others classes included reiki, astrology, hot flashes,

trusts, reinventing yourself, knitting, a country line dancing class, and a dance performance by the Seasoned Steppers, a group of women who are age 66+ and are former Ms. New York Senior America pageant contestants. The Singles Lounge, facilitated by 7 in Heaven Singles Events, was a big hit with women as well as men. Noteworthy Music played live jazz and acoustic music throughout the day. This new addition to the Over 50 Fair was well received. Repeat attendee Tony Miller of Sayville reported “The Over 50 Fair has become an annual tradition for my wife and me; it’s an event we honestly look

forward to. This year’s fair was no exception, and truly the best one yet.” The vendors connected with attendees, including those who attend year after year. Repeat exhibitor Joe Satriano of the Susan Satriano Foundation wrote “The Over 50 Fair is a grand expo of talented people and amazing products on display for sale. There is something for everyone to browse, enjoy talented performers and attend educational classes during the day.” New exhibitor Sarah Gualtieri of MD Logic gushed “Thank you for putting on such a wonderful event. This was the first show that we participated in for our brand, and we’re very happy

Odds & Ends So begins year two of the great “unretirement” from dance, as I dusted off the old tap shoes yet again and made my way back to the studio of my childhood once more. There is something to be said for recapturing your youth, however recent it may have been. In some ways, it is even better the second time around, as we all seem to have a newfound appreciation for the respite it provides from daily life. It is important for everyone to discover their own outlet, whether it be in the form of mental or physical release, as we each have our share of stresses to contend with. Sometimes, isolating a simple moment to take a deep breath and collect your thoughts is all that is needed. Other times, an hour spent unwinding while reading a few chapters of a book, listening to a record or even vegging out in front of

the television is an ideal way to decompress. With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly flip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!
