The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 14th. The Game Farm is partnering with Natural Earth Farms who will provide a pumpkin patch and farm stand. Seasonal refreshments will be on sale, including hot cider, hot chocolate, hot dogs, corn dogs on a stick, funnel cake, french fries and candied apples. Some of the animals are moved offsite into warmer quarters and will not be here during the fall. But if the weather stays warm, visitors can see the giraffe, monkeys and lemurs. If the weather gets colder, there are still lots of other animals and activities to enjoy, including hand-feeding the llamas, bottlefeeding goats and sheep and Bambiland, where adults and children can hand-feed the deer. The zebra, cougar, ostrich,
and buffalo can be fed through a feed tube. It’s fun to watch them eat! There will also be daily Surprise Animal Guests where visitors can get up close and personal, learn and take photos. Some animals include the alligator, tortoise, bunny, a silky chicken, and more! Admission is $16.95 for adults, $14.95 for children ages 3-11. Children ages two and under are free. A Week To Remember
This summer, I was given the opportunity to compete at the American Legion Boys’ State Program. For around 1,100 of Long Island’s most promising leaders, this week away from our parents was a big deal. Even though I was rejected from my first application for the program, I did not lose hope. I was soon referred to Mr. Marco Calise, one of the Vice Presidents of the Police Association of Suffolk County. He had faith in me. At one of their meetings, the board, as well as the entire group, debated upon many boys vying for the position. I am proud to say that I was chosen to represent Suffolk County, the Police Association of Suffolk
County and St. John the Baptist DHS. While at this selective program, I met many of America’s future prominent faces. I made many friends, and accomplished a great deal. I was elected City Clerk, County Scribe and even
nominated as my County’s candidate for Boys’ Nation. In addition I assumed the role as Director for the Statesman TV News, as well as the Head Writer for the Statesman Printed News. I would not have been able to fulfill all of these
opportunities without the guidance, support and sponsorship of the Police Association of Suffolk County. This group of men comprised of many, if not all, retired policemen, truly made my dream a reality. They trusted me with their support, and I hope I did not disappoint them. Just last week, I was invited back to the Board Meeting and gave a summation of my experience during my week at Boys’ State. It has been an amazing road, and I am very glad that I found the Police Association of Suffolk County. I would like to finalize this week’s article with a big ‘thank you’ to the Police Association of Suffolk County!

Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that. What a difference one week can make, right? I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the
winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.) But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties. Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.
So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all... Part of the beauty of living on Long Island is that we are fortunate to experience all four seasons – may as well start enjoying them. There will always be something to look forward to, somewhere else you would rather be … but there’s still nothing quite like the here and now.

thanksgiving Breakfast On Thursday, October 10th, Islip Food for Hope will once again host its annual Thanksgiving Breakfast to continue its special fund to purchase food baskets for needy families within the Town of Islip. This year’s event will be held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook beginning at 8 a.m. A “Thanksgiving Breakfast Committee” was formed approximately 30 years ago and it included the Town Supervisor, Town management,
employees and community members. This committee was formed as an act of goodwill and hosted an annual Supervisor’s Thanksgiving Breakfast Fundraiser to purchase turkeys for clients of Town programs and agencies in the Youth Bureau, Human Development and Handicapped Services Divisions. Over the years the “Breakfast” has expanded, and last year 425 baskets of Thanksgiving meal provisions were delivered
to clients of 57 different community agencies and local churches. This year we hope to exceed that number and provide baskets to more families in need.
