n August 27th and 28th, Mrs. Gschwind and Ms. Lapid presented a Study Skills Boot Camp to a group of incoming 6th grade students that had signed up for the program. Students received folders containing important literature regarding academic goals, keys to success, time and stress management and several work sheets that were utilized during the program. Classes For Caregivers Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” a six-week course unique to the Long Island region. Classes will meet on consecutive Mondays from October 20th to

I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices
– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SELF DEFENSE
On September 10th, about 50 seniors from the Bristal Assisted Living communities on LI, ages 75–95, displayed their paintings at a silent art auction that raised nearly $1,500 to benefit Senior Dreams Come True. One third of the 80 paintings in the show, held at Hofstra University, were sold. Senior Dreams Come True was founded by the Melville-based elder law and estate planning firm Genser Dubow Genser & Cona. The charity grants wishes to lowincome seniors in need on Long Island, ranging from helping someone with every-day financial struggles to granting lifelong wishes. “We were so pleased

to team up with the Bristal for this wonderful fundraiser,” says Jennifer Cona, Esq., managing partner of Genser Dubow Genser & Cona. “The art auction engaged the residents by tapping into their creative side and also provided an opportunity for them to help their peers on Long Island who are less fortunate. The money we raised will help us give wishes to more seniors.” The last wish was given to Anna Castoro, Riverhead, who needed extensive dental work that included several crowns, an extraction and a tooth added to a partial. Anna was thrilled to receive this wish so she can speak more clearly and not be afraid to smile. While the seniors who did the artwork are helping less fortunate seniors, they also benefited by
developing their own creative abilities. Esther Teitel, age 95, who grew up in Chicago and now lives in the Bristal in East Northport, studied art in college. Her artwork flourished in her 70s with the help of many teachers. Esther estimates she has created 75 pieces of artwork. The painting sold at the art auction was entitled: “Bride”,
painted from The Bride by George Hitchcock. “I love painting especially because it gives me peace of mind,” says Esther. Myra Lerner, age 86, who lives in The Bristal North Hills, painted as a child and is self-taught. Her first oil painting in 50 years entitled “Trees” was sold at the auction. Myra also does needlepoint, knitting

Never Forget On September 11th, the Bay Shore Middle School commemorated the thirteenth anniversary of the tragic events surrounding the al-Qaeda terrorist attacks. The Bay Shore Middle School’s staff and students reflected on 9/11 in several ways. The principal, Dr. Outlaw, called for a moment of silence over the loud speaker at approximately the same time the first airliner crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. During an assembly in the main auditorium, sixth graders were addressed by Mr. Ken Summers, a 9/11 survivor of the Twin Towers’ terrorist attacks and eventual collapse. During the seventh graders’ assembly in the Little Theater, students viewed excerpts of the World Trade Center movie directed by Oliver Stone. The movie focused on the nonfiction account of heroic firemen and police officers who risked their lives to rescue victims of 9/11 just as the Twin Towers fell. Many individual teachers shared 9/11 photos, articles, documentaries, literature and deep discussions with their students. In Mrs. Yarborough’s ELA Seminar classes, Mr. Richard de Coteau, volunteered to share his 9/11 experiences with her students throughout the day. The father of one
of Mrs. Yarborough’s current students, Mr. de Coteau is by trade an X-ray technician and has been a United States Air Force reservist for the last thirty-one years. When Mr. de Coteau arrived at the medical office where he worked
in New Jersey on the morning of 9/11, all of the patients, staff, and receptionists were gathered around the TV. He arrived late because traffic was stopped on the George Washington Bridge. At the time, his car radio was not working and he didn’t know what was going on in the city. He described watching the Twin Towers go down as,

A dedicated contractor working as a foreman, Mr. de Coteau’s cousin went back to work when an unfortunate “All Clear,” was given moments before the Twin Towers collapsed. Mr. de Coteau spoke about the diseased lungs of 9/11 survivors and rescue workers he had the opportunity to X-ray months after 9/11. Their lungs were contaminated from the fumes, smoke, and debris ash they breathed in from the destruction of the World Trade Center. Inspired by the 9/11 survivors’ renewed appreciation for life, Mr. de Coteau ended his student presentations by asking students the following. “Why does it take a great tragedy to connect people? If you were a 9/11 survivor who made it out of the Twin Towers, how would you live the remainder of your life?” Mr. de Coteau challenged students to think. “Don’t wait for a tragedy to appreciate life. Live your best life now because no one knows how long you have to live.”

On Wednesday, September 10th, the Bay Shore Girls Volleyball Program remembered Corey Swinson by wearing t-shirts they had created in his honor. The idea came from Sophomore Melina Mazzie, who cited Corey’s positive impact on her life as motivation. Melina said, “I wanted to do this for Mr. Swinson because so many people did things for me when I had my bone marrow transplant. Those positive actions helped me a lot and put a smile on my face. I wanted to do the same thing for Messiah [Corey’s son] and help in any way that I could.” Corey J. Swinson, a Bay Shore native who made it
to the NFL and returned home as a volunteer youth football coach, devoted his time to making a difference in young people’s lives. He worked as Director of School Safety and Security for Copiague Public Schools after having served as Security Director for the Bay Shore School District. Born and raised in Bay Shore, Swinson graduated from Bay Shore High School in 1988, where he was a standout on the basketball team and played briefly on the football team. He became a standout defensive tackle and was chosen in the seventh round of the 1995 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins, though he spent that season with
the St. Louis Rams. He enjoyed the game, relatives and friends said, but his greatest loves were his family and his hometown. On September 27th, at 11 a.m. at Fifth Avenue School, a dedication ceremony will take place to rename the Fifth Avenue Bridge the Corey J. Swinson Bridge. Corey’s son Messiah meant the world to him and he would be so proud of the man Messiah is becoming. All proceeds from the t-shirt sale will go to the Messiah Swinson College Fund. Apple Festival The Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department will host the annual Apple Festival on Saturday, October 4th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Islip Grange, located at 10 Broadway Avenue in Sayville. In case of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Sunday, October 5th. Admission is free for all and many activities will be offered at a low-cost.
There will be fun for the whole family with more than 200 different vendors and exhibitors present, as well as a Kid Fun Zone. Families will also be able to go pumpkin picking, participate in arts and crafts and enjoy various apple treats. $1.00 carousel rides are available for children, as well. Live music is also planned with performances by Slang the Band, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and Southband
from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Plus, there will be a special appearance by B103 Radio Station. Food will be available for purchase at the large festival food court. FANS FOR THE CURE - As part of their 8th Annual Baseball Road Trip, which visited more than 170 minor league ballparks, Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure recently stopped at Bethpage Ballpark to commemorate Prostate Cancer Awareness Night. Ed Randall, a longtime sportscaster and Prostate Cancer survivor, is committed to educating and combatting the disease. As part of the night’s festivities, Ed threw out the first pitch to Bud Harrelson, Ducks Co-owner, Senior VP of Baseball Operations, bench coach and former Met great, the foundation handed out brochures to help educate the fans and a Public Service Announcement ran on the scoreboard.
Study Skills Boot Camp
On August 27th and 28th, Mrs. Gschwind and Ms. Lapid presented a Study Skills Boot Camp to a group of incoming 6th grade students that had signed up for the program. From the moment these students entered the building, Mrs. Gschwind and Ms. Lapid played the roles of students: Mrs. Gschwind presented herself as the neat, organized student while Ms. Lapid appeared disheveled and
unorganized. Ms. Lapid was also breaking school rules by wearing a hat, listening to music through her ear buds and chewing gum, even cracking it and blowing bubbles as Mrs. Gschwind attempted to start the program. Students received folders containing important literature regarding academic goals, keys to success, time and stress management and several work sheets that
were utilized during the program. Students also completed a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting what they witnessed during Mrs. Gschwind and Ms. Lapid’s role playing introduction. The 2014 Study Skills Boot Camp was deemed a success. A follow-up to the program will take place in October, where valuable feedback will be used to adjust the program as needed.
REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY - The Town of Islip recently held its annual September 11th Remembrance Ceremony, which took place at Veterans Memorial Park, outside of Town Hall. Members of the Islip Town Board read aloud the names of all Islip residents who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Project Lifesaver On Wednesday, September 10th, the Long Island Chapter of the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC) made a $1,650 donation in support of the Suffolk County
Sheriff’s Office’s Project Lifesaver initiative. Project Lifesaver is wristband technology that can be worn by individuals with cognitive impairments who have a
tendency to wander. The device emits a signal that County Deputy Sheriffs can track in the event the individual ever wanders off and gets lost. The donation from the
Long Island Chapter of NAIPC, which was raised from two local businesses, i Fix Screens and 101 Mobility Long Island, will provide financial support for individuals that do

Reflections
On Thursday, September 11th, students around the district reflected on the events of September 11th, 2001 through ageappropriate lessons and commemorations. At the elementary level, instructional activities focused on themes of community and service learning. At the secondary level, Social Studies teachers drew on a recent professional development experience at the 9/11
Memorial in New York City to explore themes of historical impact, heroism and service, and memory and memorialization in specific departmental courses. School and students enrolled in public policy courses at the High School. In addition, Middle School students visited the new 9/11 Memorial Garden outside of their building for discussion and reflection. All schools paused for a building-wide moment of silence in honor of those affected by the tragic events of September 11th, 2001.
The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $25,000 grant from The Department of Criminal Justice for our consistently outstanding services and commitment to community education and wellness. The check was presented by Senator Dean Skelos to Rosalba Messina, LICADD’s Interim Executive Director and Steve Chassman, LICADD’s Clinical Director. Through these funds, LICADD can continue to expand and enhance the many workshops and programs offered throughout Long Island schools, communities and
businesses. In addition to the agency’s work with screenings, referrals to treatment and family education workshops, LICADD’s Criminal Justice System Alliances implement state-of-theart diagnostic evaluations, recommendations and treatment referral services for county attorneys, criminal courts, probation services and the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles in connection with DWI or other substance disorder offenses. For over 58 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed
to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. Through our Open Arms, EAP Program, LICADD has provided targeted solution-focused support to companies all along the East Coast, serving over 60,000 employees and their families.
