Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2013-2014 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day. In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention

for a Wild Card berth. That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch. The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next. And the one after that. Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t

mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.) In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead. Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain

key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season. • Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort. Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to

rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers. Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as well. Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives. • Cut your lawn short.

Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. It pays to give it a short cut before frost arrives so that long piles of dead grass will not smother any new growth in the spring. Also, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead to fungal

diseases like snow mold. • Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffic. You can rent an aerator from a lawn supply store so that water and fertilizer can reach the soil. • Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also replenish the strength of the root system. All summer long the lawn has been depleting the

soil of nutrition, but autumn presents a great opportunity to strengthen those roots. Consider a slow-release formula designed for winterizing that will feed the lawn all winter long. • Edge the garden beds. Take advantage of the cooler weather and slowgrowing grass to re-edge around flower beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will

Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank. Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin. • Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint. In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities. • Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint. • Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life

Sandy Relief Still Available The Islip Town Department of Economic Development has announced that the first Sandy-impacted small businesses have been approved for assistance grants, which come from New York State’s Small Business Storm Recovery Program. Through this program, small businesses are eligible for grants of up to $50,000 or more depending on the extent of a business’s storm-related losses. The grants are designed to help replace machinery, inventory, furniture and fixtures, and other physical resources that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. “In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy our Economic Development department established a point of contact between local

businesses and the agencies that could aid the recovery process,” said Councilman John Cochrane, liaison to the department. “I urge every business that suffered losses as a result of the storm to contact us and see what programs might be available to help in the recovery.” The application process is steered by local Small Business Development Centers, who offer free assistance and guidance through every stage of the grant approval process. Businesses that do not qualify for outright grants may still be eligible for low-interest loans. Memorial Garden Ceremony

September 11th, 2001: a day many will never forget, a day that the Bay Shore Community honored with the creation of the 9/11 Memorial Garden at Bay Shore Middle School. Through the generous donations of several community members, the memorial will honor members of our community whose lives were lost. The memorial’s

centerpiece includes a brick planter, which will feature a metal beam from one of the World Trade Center (WTC) towers. The piece is mounted and a marble engraving displays the names of three Bay Shore alumni who lost their lives - Chris Quackenbush, Nicholas Chiofalo and Tony Gallagher. The memorial’s first phase was completed

and an unveiling and ceremony was held on September 11th, 2013 at Bay Shore Middle School with members from the Bay Shore Schools and community. The South Shore Nature Center celebrated the beginning of a new chapter today, at a special ceremony held at its facility located on Bayview Avenue in East Islip, where the doors to the Nature Center were officially reopened to the public for the first time since late 2012, and the building rededicated as the Orr Wildlife Learning Center (OWLC), in honor of the Orr Family who donated the house and land to the Town in 1975. Islip Town Board Members Anthony Senft, Jr., Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Steve Flotteron, and Town Clerk Olga Murray and Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, were joined by Seatuck officials, state and county officials, and community members in celebrating the much-anticipated event that resurrected an invaluable educational resource. Owned and operated by the Town since 1977, the SSNC’s education center was forced to close earlier this year due to substantial financial strains in Town government.
