Race Registration Open Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced several exciting changes ahead of the Catholic Health Services 4th Annual Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and Relay Race, which will be held on Sunday, October 28th, 2018 in Patchogue. The changes for this year’s marathon include the event being dedicated to the members

of the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing and the addition of the County Executive’s Cup. “Every year, the Suffolk County Marathon allows us to raise money to help the tens of thousands of veterans who call Suffolk County home,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “This year we were able to add new features for our runners, including

duty military personnel who participate in the Full Marathon are eligible for. The trophy will be awarded to whichever Military Branch finishes with the top score overall and will have their division name engraved into it. The winners will then be able to take the trophy back to their base until next year’s race. In order to participate, there must be a minimum of five people per branch, and they must be registered for the full marathon. Scoring will be calculated by adding the placement numbers of each runner together, and for each additional runner that crosses the finish line after the first five initial runners, five points will be deducted, with a maximum deduction of 25 points. The team with the lowest score will be awarded the County Executive’s Cup. The trophy has been generously donated by the Ronayne Family. All four races begin and end in vibrant downtown Patchogue. The marathon course travels through numerous other scenic downtowns on the south shore as well, which are Blue Point, Bayport, Sayville, Oakdale, and Great River. The full marathon course will turn around in Heckscher State Park before entering the scenic Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River. The half marathon turns around on the former St. John’s University campus

(now Amity Education Group campus). After turning around in their respective locations, both the full and half marathons travel back down Montauk Highway to their starting point in Patchogue. The 5K will travel on Montauk Highway to Blue Point before turning around. In addition to the races being held, the FreedomFest will begin at

9:00 a.m., shortly after the first 5k runners finish and just before the first Half Marathoners will finish. The event will feature three stages of live musical entertainment and include more than 40 vendors that will highlight local craft breweries, award winning wines, and local food and produce. I encourage everyone to come out to the races, whether you are running or enjoying FreedomFest, to show your support for our veterans.” In March, seven members of the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton Beach were killed when a U.S. helicopter crashed in Iraq; four of whom were from Long Island. In honor of the service members that were lost, this year’s race will be dedicated to the brave members of the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing. Each leg of the Relay Race will be specifically dedicated to one of the four Long Island members of the 106th that were killed in action, including Major Andreas O’Keeffe, Master Sergeant Christopher Raguso, Technical Sergeant Dashan Briggs, and Major Christopher Zanetis. Additionally, in honor of their memory, County Executive Bellone will be running with active duty members of the 106th Rescue Wing. Members of the 106th will be participating in both the full marathon and the relay race to honor their fallen airmen. This year’s race will also feature a County Executive’s Cup, which is a new trophy that active

Acknowledgements I have been putting this off for quite some time. This “final step,” if you will, penning my last column for South Bay. I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter. And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain.

My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Always, though, the idea was to find a common thread, a unifying theme. Change. It is the one constant. A perfect theme for this transitional transcript, don’t you think? Over the last several weeks, I have received countless letters from fans, family, friends – even a few detractors – most of whom were avid followers of my writing, all of whom wanted to take the opportunity to wish me well on the next phase of my journey. There were even a few phone calls from those

Equity First Foundation

Equity First Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. The mantra of this foundation is “Learn today to choose wisely tomorrow!” This organization holds hands-on workshops, where participants will be given course material, handouts and goals to accomplish. Some people they help through these workshops are those in women’s shelters, homeless shelters, veteran homes, at-risk communities, drug rehabilitation centers, senior centers and more.

As a way to benefit and honor certain individuals, this nonprofit holds many events throughout the year. Some of these events include their Dancing for a Cure event, which raises awareness and research for individuals who have or have had cancer; their Holiday Dream Mission, which assists families in financial distress during the holiday season; their Military Saves Week, which is geared toward assisting military members financially; and their Angel Awards, which honors women of Long Island who have created an impact in the areas of community, volunteer, philanthropy and business development! Equity First Foundation is available to provide educational presentations on an array of topics such as the importance of credit awareness, budgeting and mortgage modification. Businesses, civic groups, community centers and other groups can host seminars or workshops for their employees, members, the communityat-large, etc. If you are interested in scheduling a program, the opportunity is available! Long Island Educational Leaders Gather to Celebrate SCOPE Long Island’s public school educational leaders congregated at Oakdale’s Bourne Mansion on August 9th for SCOPE Education Service’s 34th annual Dinner Meeting for superintendents and school board members. The event served as a networking opportunity for new and returning superintendents and board of education trustees and other education system professionals. SCOPE provides a vast

array of school district services, such as before and after-school child care programs, school enrichment programs and professional development. SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy told those in attendance that their work is vital and urged them to utilize and benefit from the many programs and services SCOPE provides. He also introduced all newly installed school board members and

superintendents and wished them success in their new positions. Henry Grishman, president of SCOPE’s board of directors, gave valuable advice to the organization’s new guests. He said, “Leave your school district in far better shape than you found it.” Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of

Education MaryEllen Elia. Both provided updates on education policy changes, such as state assessments, graduation requirements and teacher evaluations. Regent Tilles said he is examining ways to create opportunities for teacher advancement and noted that while many Long Island districts are receiving national accolades, other districts are struggling. “We have to remember that those kids are our kids,” Regent Tilles

said. “We cannot separate districts doing well from those that aren’t. The equity issue needs to be brought to the forefront.” Commissioner Elia urged educators to be vocal about the issues surrounding the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, the new New York State standards and assessment issues. She said she is most proud of ESSA’s emphasis on civic responsibility and engagement. “We need to teach

students to be critical thinkers that look at issues,” Commissioner Elia stated. “Students need to be aware of civic problems.” After receiving questions about the controversial opt-out movement, the Annual Professional Performance Review, charter schools and the move for privatization of public schools, Elia encouraged educators to remain steadfast on their focus of what is good and beneficial for students.

Volunteers who value clean waterways are encouraged to register with Keep Islip Clean for the International Coastal Cleanup. For over thirty years, citizens concerned about the marine environment collect data in September for the Ocean Conservancy. KIC is a sponsor of this worldwide initiative in Islip Township.

Litter is tallied on data sheets during cleanups, which will be combined with information from other locations to determine global pollution trends. KIC will provide all instruction and supplies. Beach locations are often chosen first, so volunteers are asked to consider picking creeks, streams, ponds and wetlands.

Charity Run Held Leah Healy, a senior at Bay Shore High School and the proud sister of Sean Healy, a residential student at Latham Centers (a residential school and treatment program for children and adults with complex special needs [including Prader-Willi syndrome]) in Brewster, MA organized a charity 5K Run for Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) to benefit Latham Centers. More than $16,000 was raised for the Brewster, MA-based non-profit human service provider. On June 16th, over 300 participants laced up their running shoes to take part in the 5K Run for PraderWilli syndrome (PWS) in Bay Shore (Long Island), New York. Leah Healy, planned, organized, and executed the race to raise awareness for PWS, and to raise funds for Latham Centers. The funds raised will support key initiatives at Latham including the Expanding our Circle

capital campaign for the new Latham Community Center; Latham’s Asinotherapy Program (donkey therapy); and Latham’s Children’s Services Program. Leah’s mother Sharon Healy said, “This race was very important to Leah. It was her idea, and she wanted to take the lead on all the planning and details. Junior year can be a very stressful time. She had a pretty rigorous course load, and she took all of this on in the middle of her lacrosse season. We are so proud of what she was able to accomplish.” Leah’s online fundraising page states, “I have a 15-year-old brother named Sean and he has Prader-Willi syndrome. Dance Connection’s Competition Team completed their season with a performance aboard Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas July 6th Bahamas sailing. Cancer Summit Set The Gregory Foundation for Cancer Research will host a Biden Cancer Summit on September 21st, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Northwell Health’s corporate headquarters at 2000 Marcus Ave. in New Hyde Park. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announces multiple outreach events throughout the fall designed to give substantial information regarding disability and pension claims, including eligibility requirements and benefits, for Suffolk County veterans. The Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency (VSA) collaborates with other county agencies, such as the Suffolk County Office for the Aging and the Department of Social Services, to inform veterans of potential benefits that may be available to them and to assist them in applying for them, including the VA’s “best kept secret” — pension funds available for the widows of veterans. The Veterans and Widows program includes Pension with Aid and Assistance. To qualify, the veteran or widow must require the assistance of another person with their daily living skills (such as bathing, dressing, eating, or administering medication) and they must be paying a caregiver (family members may qualify) or live in an assisted living facility. “The Veterans Service Agency (VSA) brings a wealth of information to our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Our veterans have served the American people with honor and sacrifice. It’s important that we support their service when they come home by not only making sure they know what is available to them, but helping them to access those resources.” “Suffolk County VSA is a valuable resource to the community,” said Director of Suffolk County Veteran Services Tom Ronayne. “Tasked with serving not only veterans but also Active Duty military, National Guard, Reserves, family members, dependents and survivors, we extend well into the community. Making Strides Against Cancer The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks will occur on Sunday, October 21st, 2018 at Jones Beach and Sunday, October 28th, 2018 at Suffolk County Community CollegeEastern Campus, uniting communities, honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. The event at Jones Beach is the most attended event in the United States with over 65,000 volunteer participants, helping to raise nearly $3 million dollars. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation. The noncompetitive, inspirational event raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. In 2017, ACS staff helped guide more than 40,000 cancer patients through every step of their journey as they moved through the health care system, including helping with insurance problems, referring them to ACS and other local services, assisting caregivers and addressing obstacles to care. “Because of the determination of Making Strides supporters, the American Cancer Society is there for people in every community affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may face one in the future, or

Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who

were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual

training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to

use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule
