Executive Director Named every year to ensure that working parents have access to quality child care. Rojas has extensive knowledge of the myriad issues surrounding the child care industry as wells as its critical importance to Long Island economic development and to building a successful future workforce. Prior to being named executive director, Rojas

served as the Child Care Council of Suffolk’s associate executive director as well as a consultant to the Long Island Pre-K Initiative. The Centerport resident has devoted nearly two decades working to improve policies and programs in New York that affect children and families. Prior to joining CCCS, she was vice president of

Grants and Operations at the Rauch Foundation in Garden City, where she was responsible for grantmaking and day-to-day operations. From 2007 to 2012, Rojas was the deputy executive director for the Children’s Defense Fund – New York, where she managed the policy, legislative and advocacy efforts around children’s health, juvenile justice,

child welfare, education and early childhood learning. Prior to that, she served in the City of New York’s Administration for Children’s Services in various capacities, including: Family Court attorney, chief of staff and associate commissioner for the Division of Child Care and Head Start. Adam RealMan and Coney Island USA Present: The 11th annual Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition at Sideshows by the Seashore! The strangest and most extravagant beards and moustaches descend upon Coney Island to see whose facial hair reigns supreme. Founded in 2008, the Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition has grown to become one of Coney Island’s most unique evenings of entertainment. Over the past ten years, hundreds of bearded men (and women) have competed to take home the much coveted Beard & Moustache Fez trophy and other great prizes. “With ten events under our belt, we’re the longest running beard competition on east coast and the only one in the New York area!” Boasts Adam Realman, the competition’s producer and emcee. “And I’m thrilled to announce that punk rock legend Handsome Dick

It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task

of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.

At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

On August 8th, the Special Olympics New York Leadership Council hosted its 12th annual Summer Social at the Marquee New York. Nearly 550 New Yorkers came together to support and celebrate unity and inclusion. All proceeds, including ticket sales and silent auction funds, are being donated to the athletes of Special Olympics New York. The event raised over $125,000 to support of the Special Olympics New York mission which allows athletes to showcase their talents and abilities, while improving self-esteem, developing social interactions and enhancing leadership skills on and off the playing field. A special tribute was made to John Cronin, John’s Crazy Socks’ Founder and Special Olympics New York athlete. Special Olympics New York expressed its gratitude to the many generous supporters and the very talented Leadership Council who hosted the event, as well as contributed their time, talent and treasure to serve and bring this event to the New York City community. Northwell Health announced that they are sponsoring the FREE Fresh Truck Mobile Market, a farmer’s market on wheels run by the Old Bethpage-based nonprofit Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE). The truck, donated by Suffolk Transportation Services, Inc., filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, will make healthy, local, affordable produce available to Long Islanders, especially those who are experiencing food insecurity, each week at six locations in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The FREE Fresh Truck Mobile Market is FREE’s way of making locally grown fresh produce more accessible in high need communities. In addition, it provides FREE with a means of making a positive impact on the obesity epidemic. The FREE Fresh Truck Mobile Market will have nutrition educators on hand to help answer questions and provide guidance as well as tip sheets, books, samples and

giveaways. “As an organization that cares for two million people every year, we see many who would benefit from adding more fresh produce to their diets and appreciate FREE’s partnership to accomplish this,” said Ram Raju, MD, chief community investment officer at Northwell Health. “Many ailments, from heart disease to diabetes, could either be prevented or minimized through a healthy diet that incorporates fresh fruits and vegetables.” “The produce will primarily come from FREE’s FREEdom Farm in Brentwood,” said Robert S. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board recently joined at August’s Town Board meeting in celebration of Islip athletes who achieved success in the Special Olympics. Among the honorees were the East Islip Special Olympics team who on May 19th, and after months of preparation and training, exhibited determination despite heavy rains, bringing home a total of 24 medals. The team of six middle schoolers ((Riley Carrillo, Madeline Director, Jake Kozak, Janissa Lloyd, Julia Modico and Michael

Pacheco-Uvidia) and nine high schoolers (Delany Conlon, Danny DiOrio, Robert Phillips, Jake Pippatone, Michael Quagliara, Sara Spruyt and Kelly Stupplebeen) along with coaches Laura O’Donnell and Julie Susskind, earned 11 gold, 11 silver and two bronze medals. Supervisor Carpenter and the Islip Town Board also congratulated powerlifter and multiple gold medal winner, Angel Athenas, who in May broke the powerlifting record at the 2018 National Special Olympics in Old Bethpage. Angel’s success

and athletic skill secured her a position in the World Championship Special Olympic Games, to be held in March of 2019 in Dubai. “On behalf of the Town Board, I would like to congratulate all of these young athletes, who have achieved incredible triumphs through hard work, determination and perseverance,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
