n Saturday, August 16th, Good Samaritan Hospital showcased its pediatric services with a Children’s Health Fair at Westfield South Shore Mall in Bay Shore. Families enjoyed a day of fun, games, giveaways and activities. While children had their faces painted and tried their luck at the carnival games, parents received information from health experts on various topics of relevance.

Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet. Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.

We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what? To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming? As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season. That said, the one regret I have about summer

“ending” is that all the catching up I was planning to do on various series and books, well, it just didn’t happen for one reason or another. Oh well. That’s what rainy days are for, I suppose. That and – dare I say it – any upcoming snow days?? In the meantime, try to enjoy this “last” week of summer – and maybe even the next few weekends as well. Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. “It’s meant to give speech-language pathologists the tools they need to deal with stuttering in this age group, but it also offers good ideas for parents and teachers,” said Professor Peter Ramig of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Ramig is one of five nationally recognized experts appearing in the DVD produced by the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. “We focus on demonstrating a variety of therapy strategies that are appropriate in working with children who stutter,” adds Ramig. Generous Toy Donation

Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently received a generous donation of Kong brand dog toys from Live. Love.Bark, the shelter’s non-profit volunteer group. The donation included more than 30 different toys ranging in size and style,

worth just more than $200. Kong brand is known for being a more heavy-duty, more durable toy. Live. Love.Bark replaced many old and broken toys with these in hopes they last longer, and give the dogs months of entertainment and stimulation. The Islip Animal Shelter

is always accepting donations of new or gently used toys, along with many other items to keep the more than 100 adoptable animals happy and healthy.
