Phase I Approved Phase I of the Heartland Town Square development project was approved by the Islip Town Board today, marking the culmination of years of research and public comment covering all aspects of the proposal. The vote follows a public hearing held in April, where 144 people signed up to speak, including nearly 1,700 comments submitted via the Town’s website. “This project has been
investigated from every possible vantage point, and the Board believes that the Heartland development represents an opportunity for our Town and for Long Island,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “No other project in the Town’s history has faced the scrutiny that has been imposed upon Heartland, and part of that has been providing opportunities for public comment throughout the past few
years at critical junctures.” “We would like to thank the Islip Town Supervisor and the Town Board, for all of their hard work and dedication in approving our application. We look forward to working with the Town to build this exciting development, which will set the standard as a place where both our young adults and empty nesters will be able to live, work and play in one place,” said the project’s
developer, Jerry Wolkoff. In the months after the Public Hearing, the Town has made documents available outlining the Heartland proposal in order to give residents as much information as possible. Residents can continue to view these documents by visiting the Town’s website at www. islipny.com. Phase I of the plan involves developing 113 acres of the Pilgrim State
property into a mixeduse area that includes residential, retail, and office facilities. Phase I, and all future development at the site, will continue to be subject to stringent environmental review and oversight by multiple agencies. Town of Islip officials initiated unprecedented community outreach through all social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook,
Twitter, e-mail, written communication and the Town’s website. A public informational meeting was conducted for the benefit of the Town Board and for the public, to listen to an extensive presentation by the Town’s Planning Commissioner and department staff, illustrating the scope of the Heartland project and the recommendations of the

Continued From 3 Town’s Planning Board. The environmental review process culminated with the unanimous adoption of a finding statement by the Town Board back in November 17th, 2014. The Town Planning Board then held a public hearing on April 16th, 2015 and, after much review, adopted its
recommendation August 18th, 2016. By law, the application was then required to be reviewed by the Suffolk County Planning Commission, which also held a public hearing on January 4, and continued on February 1 of 2017, when the County Planning Commission adopted a resolution approving the application. The Town Board public
hearing for the Change of Zone was held on April 26th, 2017, at which time the public hearing was closed and the board reserved decision. After much consultation and review with the planning commissioner and staff, the board meeting for the vote on the project was scheduled for Tuesday, July 18th at 6 p.m.

A Funny Thing Happened A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close
for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

regulations. Last year, the heaviest shark caught was a 288-pound Mako aboard Capt. Chuck Mallinson’s Joy Sea. Participants and fans will also have the opportunity to learn about these mysterious, sometimes dangerous and often misunderstood species from marine biologists who will be on-site. These marine biologists will be available to comment on the migration habits, predatory nature and the health of the species. Fishing starts at 6 a.m. on both days and ends on Friday at 6 p.m. and on Saturday at 5 p.m. An awards ceremony will commence at the end of the tournament. Entry fee is $800 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the tournament. Star Island wishes to advise all prospective participants that, as per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $6.00 per foot for up to 59 feet, $6.50 per foot for 60 to 84 feet and $7.50 per foot for 85 feet and up. Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, has been hosting a camp program which has been helping atrisk Long Island children for over 45 years. The Westfield South Shore Mall, located at 1701 Sunrise Hwy., Bay Shore, New York, was the site of the Ribbon-Cutting for the “Coins for Camp Wishing Well” project. Community leaders and families joined the FSL to kickoff this vital program that strives to help Long Island children in need. A camp experience is positive outlet to help steer children struggling with the challenges of poverty away from the temptations of gang involvement, street violence, drugs and alcohol by providing an environment that fosters life skills, develops self- esteem, and forges new friendships. Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.
But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom.
One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000
pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students
can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to

throughout his years at SSCM, from his kindergarten days through his involvement in SSCM’s 8th grade accelerated algebra program. Patrick has been an active member of SSCM parish and school community, serving as an Altar Server for several years and acting in a volunteer capacity at every major SSCM event, from Parish Outreach
food drives to Breakfasts with Santa. In addition to his academic success, Patrick has rounded out his thrust for learning and community time with a healthy dose of athletics, having enjoyed three years on SSCM’s Cross Country Team throughout his middle school years. He was also a member of SSCM’s Shakespeare troupe, a member of SSCM’s Distinguished Scholars, and was in the Gifted and Talented Program at SSCM. With his choice of high school acceptance at Holy Trinity, St. Anthony’s and St. John the Baptist High School, Patrick will be happy to attend St. John the Baptist in the fall, having earned a Coop Scholarship based on his CHSEE (Catholic High School Entrance Exam) scores! If that weren’t enough, Patrick also managed to capture several other honors, including an SSCM Senior Citizens Scholarship, awards for Altar Service and Excellence in Social Studies, a Parents Association Scholarship and the Monsignor Rooney Scholarship from the Holy Name Society. Volunteers from the audit and tax firm KPMG gathered at Brookwood Hall Park on a beautiful morning in June for the unusual task of painting designs on trash cans for a Keep Islip Clean anti-litter project. The group of eleven accountants used a variety of paint colors provided by
the Town of Islip to decorate ten large trash drums with flowers, summer scenes and other colorful designs. The barrels will be placed at a number of local parks. Studies by KIC’s parent organization, Keep America Beautiful, show conclusively that trash cans with attractive and whimsical designs
encourage a higher percentage of use, thereby reducing litter in public places. This project is KPMG’s second outing with Keep Islip Clean. An employee group volunteered last year at KIC’s Project Bloom community gardens at Brookwood Hall Park in East Islip.

THESPIAN SOCIETY INDUCTION - Bay Shore High School Thespian Troupe 2963 recently held its annual induction and awards ceremony. The students who were inducted into the troupe have participated in the drama program in various ways, whether by performing on stage, playing in the pit orchestra or as a member of the backstage crew. The troupe also handed out awards to recognize excellence in performance among its members. Congratulations to the inductees and award winners!
