Flipgrid is a video discussion platform that enables students to communicate their ideas in a deeper and more creative manner. Students use Flipgrid to make videos to ask or answer questions by teachers. Originally Dr. Charlie Miller, co-founder of Flipgrid, developed a version of Flipgrid called Vidku for his college students, as he was a professor at the University of Minnesota (UMN). Since its official release in October of 2014 Flipgrid has 21 million active students across 181 countries. This platform is so well known, that every second 9 new videos are created and uploaded by students around the world. Flipgrid has a total of over 300 years of combined content. Flipgrid has been growing in popularity over the past year, and decided to go on a bus tour up the east coast. They started at Davis Elementary School in Marietta, Georgia and made their way up to Middletown High School in Rhode Island. On their journey up the east coast, they stopped at our beautiful Bay Shore Middle School to meet with us and our librarian, Mrs. Holzweiss, who is one of their first ambassadors. Students have been using Flipgrid in the library for almost 4 years! Their visit to our school induced excitement to those of whom used and enjoyed Flipgrid. At the Flipgrid presentation, they were very outgoing and energetic. Flipgrid had fun with the kids there and played around, danced, let the children sign their voice pod. Although they

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years and has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering a considerable amount, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping those in need look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes, something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. Eileen is very dedicated to The Emergency Shelter of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch, where she provides her services for free to their residents when they are open in the winter months. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each

and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products! In the end the Suffolk ASSET conference was an amazing educational experience. With both companies and schools being under the same roof it enabled students to see what STEAM had in store for them. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I am happy to see construction begin on what will be an outstanding recreational outlet for the young people of our community, said Assemblyman Phil Ramos “Today we are seeing the results of what happens when we cross partisan and jurisdictional lines and just focus our families and children. Due to the joint effort with Supervisor Carpenter we can finally begin to bring back summer for our families and children.” The Town of Islip will use its own resources for the demolition, including a 25 ton excavator with a hydraulic jackhammer, in an effort to save taxpayer dollars and reduce the total cost of the project. The machinery will be used to break up concrete in preparation for construction, and will excavate approximately 50,000 lbs of soil. The bid will be advertised Thursday, July 26th, 2018, with documents ready for pick up.

community cat population. Eighteen volunteers in total attended the July Town Board meeting, to receive Certificates of Recognition for their service to the Islip community. Since launching in April, the TNR program has successfully spayed and neutered nearly 800 community cats, made possible through the tireless efforts of these volunteers.
