This past spring, the Bay Shore Middle School Tri-M Honor Society participated in a 5K walk for the March of Dimes at Jones Beach. The Society raised $1,200 for this charity, which is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth
and infant mortality. 8th Grader Rachel Wright said, “The walk for babies was nothing like I thought it would be, seeing everyone and hearing their stories, meeting new people, it was amazing. The walk itself was very refreshing, I would love to do it again.” Tri-M President, Mallory

The young lady was on her feet quite a bit at SSCM’s Awards Ceremony, earning a Parents Association Scholarship, an award for Altar Service and one for Excellence in Music. The highlight of the day came when Theresa was named as the recipient of SSCM’s Cyrillian Award, a unique honor for the student hand-selected by SSCM’s Principal, Sister Susan Snyder, and based on all around academics and service. Theresa’s name will be added to the names of former recipients of the honor, on a commemorative plaque, which hangs in the halls of the school for posterity. I am endlessly fascinated by words and the countless ways in which they can be arranged, manipulated, stylized to convey the precise meaning the author intends. And with that, is there ever really complete precision? Once the text is shared with the masses, the words take on a life of their own, open to new interpretations by an endless array of readers. Such is the beauty of the art. Inspiration is everywhere, if you choose to be open to it. entire stories be derived from the briefest instant. It’s all in the approach. Just as photographs capture the visual of a moment for posterity, words capture the pure essence behind it. They exist separately, and are at once complementary. Perhaps that is the source of my fascination with both. To be able to elicit an emotion whether positive, negative or somewhere in between - is always the ultimate goal. To achieve that is the greatest sign of success for anyone in the arts. The process to reach that level is a never-ending one, to be continuously tweaked and modified in the quest for perfection, for meaning. May we all find it someday.
