Arnoldstock took place on Saturday, July 14th in West Babylon and benefits the Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society (NSASA).

in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation. Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to fluctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.
initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free flow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways. Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”

There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged? As with most things, recognizing a flaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement. Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.

Cal was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma in June of 2011. Although the brain tumor was removed,
due to allergic reactions with the chemotherapy drug, treatment had to cease and the aggressive tumor returned a year after Cal’s initial diagnosis, this time in an inoperable part of the brain. He passed away a month later; just three days shy of his 67th birthday. Cal’s family and friends came together as Cal’s Crusaders for the inaugural Long Island Brain Tumor Walk in 2014 For years the National Brain Tumor Society has
hosted events such as walks, runs, freezes, and rides to raise awareness of disease, to raise money for better treatments, and to connect the brain tumor community. 2014 was the first year Long Island hosted its own walk which was a total success. This year the Long Island Brain Tumor Walk will be held September 15th at Jones Beach. The National Brain Tumor Society is the largest nonprofit organization
dedicated to the brain tumor community in the United States and is rated as a 4-star charity on the Charity Navigator website. 688,000 people in the US are living with a brain tumor. Although 550,000 are benign, 138,000 are malignant and more than 69,000 others will be diagnosed this year. This is why the National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for

Baby Quail For the eighth consecutive year, Islip’s Sherwood Elementary School partnered with the Seatuck Environmental Association to help reintroduce northern
bobwhite quail back to Long Island. Sherwood welcomed 16 baby quail, which stayed at Sherwood for two weeks until students in Robb Le Vien’s class walked them
back to Seatuck’s South Shore Nature Center. “The children enjoyed having a picnic and watching the quails frolic around the preserve,” said Le Vien.

art studios through live demonstrations by Art League instructors. Volunteers Needed Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), Long Island’s leading volunteer organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and bullying, is looking for concerned individuals to present their acclaimed classroom programs on bullying, Internet safety and child abuse prevention to students in the coming school year. “The demand for CAPS workshops continues to grow, so it is urgent that we find more volunteers to join our mission of working together to keep every child safe from harm,” according to Alane Fagin, Executive Director.
“We can do something to prevent child abuse and bullying! We know that students who are exposed to prevention education early and throughout their school years are better prepared to respond when faced with a difficult situation.” Comprehensive training is provided to prospective volunteers to present CAPS workshops in schools across Long Island. Training sessions for new volunteers for the upcoming school year are being scheduled for this August and September. CAPS urges anyone interested in learning

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,
strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer
questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment.
