Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga is partnering again this year with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) to collect NEW school supplies to fill back packs for children in need. LICH will distribute backpacks and school supplies for up to 4,000 children in need on Long Island. On August 29th, they will begin giving out supplies at an annual event “Back Pack Pirates Festival.”

As they got ready to close out the school year, Mary G. Clarkson School presented its annual VIP (Very Important Person) Day for all of its first graders.

Clarkson’s Principal, acted as Master of Ceremonies as the first graders united to perform in a delightful tale of “How Does Your Garden Grow?” Led in song and movement by Mary G. Clarkson’s Music Teacher, Mr. Schecker, it all started with Planting Seeds by the children of Mrs. Martin and Ms. Tramposch’s classes, followed by We Are the Loveliest Flowers of Mrs. Aponte/Mrs. Swank and Mrs. Rebore’s classes. Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive. While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure. Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline. On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make

their way from one side to another. Children, pets, senior citizens… all seem drawn to this spot. From there, we took a drive to several of the private beaches to scope out a nice sunset view. Navy Beach, Outer Beach… all were dotted with signs indicating the fines due if you dared park without the prestigious East Hampton town beach pass. How strictly was this rule enforced after dusk? We didn’t know; but, as the sun began to reach its golden hour, we decided it was worth the risk. And so, we found a rock wall to perch on overlooking the water, and we waited (one eye on the parking lot at all times, of course). Once the last rays had dissipated, we headed into town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages. What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan paradise to be sure. As the clock ticked to approximately 10 p.m., we of course decided we were slightly hungry once again, and in need of just a small snack for the road. After eventually being seated at one of the aforementioned outdoor patios, we settled in to people watch. Little did we know that the most fascinating spectacle would be surrounding our very own table. On the one side, a young woman argued vehemently with the manager over her credit card charge, demanding it be reversed immediately. On the other, a family with several children was finishing up their meal, when I heard the unmistakeable commotion of a child getting sick, right in the leftovers bag. His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails. Check, please! And that, ladies and gentlemen, was The End of The End for us for that evening. ’Til next time.

theme or book for their door. Together they design, draw, color, cut and tape their masterpieces over a number of weeks. The door-decorating contest culminates in the spring Scholastic Book Fair. Mrs. Holzweiss, the school librarian, creates a Google form so the students may vote for their favorite door during their lunch periods. This year, the students voted for Miss Makely’s advisory for their Harry Potter themed door. Representatives from

Scholastic visited also, and chose Mrs. Capolongo’s Jack and the Beanstalk door as the most creative. Each advisory student and their teacher received $10 of Scholastic dollars to spend at the book fair. “The ‘Open Up the Doors to Reading’ Scholastic Book Fair Contest creates a sense of community of readers among the faculty and students at Bay Shore Middle School,” says principal Dr. Outlaw.

SELDEN CO-OP INCOMING - Gardiner Manor School’s fifth grade scholars hosted an orientation for the incoming third graders. Incoming students were able to tour the building and visit with third grade teachers, scholars and play “Who Wants To Be A Gardiner Manor Scholar?” Both the current students and our visitors enjoyed the visit and the new students learned about the new school they will attend in September.

ELECTRIC LESSON - Mr. LaRuina’s class at Gardiner Manor School recently learned about electricity conductors by using homemºade play-doh as a conductor. They discovered that Play-doh can conduct electricity to light LED bulbs using a 9V battery.

The purpose of the kickoff was to introduce the new book for our whole school read which is The One and Only Ivan. The “Open Up the Doors to Reading” Scholastic Book Fair Contest at the Bay Shore Middle School is a wonderful way to celebrate not only reading, but also creativity. EAGLE SCOUT HELPS VETS - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently congratulated Ethan Williams Meyn of Troop 153 in Bay Shore upon achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Project, Mr. Meyn completed a large deck for the VFW Hall in Copiague, which will allow the hall to host a wide range of events. Councilman Flotteron thanked him for his dedication to the veterans of the Long Island community.

Call/Text 631-456-4600 Farm to Table Program Continued From 17 This summer program will take place Monday through Thursday, July 5th to August 16th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Pronto of Long Island, 128 Pine Aire Drive in Bay

Shore. This free program is open to students in fifth to eighth grades, and enrollment is open until July 17th. As part of the program, students will be taken on educational field trips, treated to guest speakers,

nutrition workshops, and environmental education. The goal is to introduce and develop knowledge of planting, farming, and maintaining sustainable food sources. Children will also be receiving free breakfast and lunch.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide this program to the children of the community,” said Kathy Bennett, President, Pronto. “We’d also like to thank our partners in this endeavor for realizing the need to provide these

types of programs to the community we serve,” she continued. This program serves middle school at risk kids at a time when they need positive supervision and structure to prevent gang inﬂuence and violence.
