Suffolk County Community College athletics is number one in the country and has been recognized by The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) with the group’s and prestigious NATYCAA Directors’ Cup. The NATYCAA Cup program began in 2004 to highlight excellence in two-year athletics based on success in championship competition. Awards are given to the NJCAA member colleges based on performance at national championship events throughout the academic year. Suffolk bested more than 200 college athletic programs nationally for the award in the nonscholarship Division III collegiate level. Suffolk County Community College also received national recognition from the National Association of College Director of Athletics for placing second in the country in the Learfield Director’s Cup standing that is composed of 538 Division I, Division II, and Division III two-year colleges. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall

Friends of America’s Vet Dogs recently presented a $14,000 check to America’s Vet Dogs to sponsor two new service/assistance dogs for honorably discharged veterans in need. The presentation took place at the America’s Vet Dogs & Guide Dog Foundation facility in Smithtown. The proceeds were generated at a recent Chinese Auction held
in Sayville by Friends of America’s Vet Dogs - a group of 22 friends who joined together with the sole purpose of helping as many veterans as possible through the assistance dog program. Group members come from Sayville, Patchogue, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Farmingville and Holbrook and events are held in all of those communities year
round to support America’s Vet Dogs. Last year, the group sponsored three new service/assistance dogs and hopes to raise enough for a third dog this year as well. The group will be sponsoring a $10 Comedy Show Night in Bohemia on July 10th and can be reached at 631.567.9493 for further details.

Caelyn Reilly from Bay Shore High School donated nearly 180 hours in the Gift Shop, Pediatrics and special projects. Caelyn will study at Johns Hopkins and aspires to be a physician. Meaghan Weihs from West Islip High School donated nearly 150 hours in the Ambulatory Surgery
Department and helped with special projects. Meaghan is going into the nursing program at Farmingdale State University. The three graduating Junior Volunteers each received $1,500 scholarships for their work at Good Samaritan. Scholarships are fully funded through donation boxes located in the hospital’s gift shop, thrift shop, coffee shop and employee cafeteria.

Even as they wound down to the final days of school, students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park turned their attention to thinking of planet earth. SSCM Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Lisa Shirreffs shared a fun and earthfriendly recycling activity with her students during the last week of school. Collecting thousands of used crayons, the students got involved in a community service through the “Crazy Crayons Project,” which has made it possible to stop 105,000 pounds of unwanted crayons from going into landfills with the help from schools, organization educators and kids across this country. This national crayon recycling program is
simple and brilliant. Students collect unwanted crayons, used, broken, unpopular colors. They then have a fun time sorting, counting and boxing them up and shipping them to Crazy Crayons, where they are melted down and made into new crayons.
These new crayons are sent to hospitals, orphanages and inner city schools. The students found this to be a great interactive learning experience and it was a perfect way for our youngest students to have a way to give back to others.
