The Heart of the Matter “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

Brook Avenue School’s first STEM night was enjoyed by scholars and parents! The school’s little scientists had the opportunity to shine for their parents and peers using the skills learned and experienced during Robotics, Whiz kids, and

Science Olympiads. A special thank you to the Bay Shore High School Robotics team, Mr. Claiborne and Mrs. Bettinelli for all of their support in helping grow the next generation of science scholars. Bill Gates is correct in

saying that technology is the tool, but teachers are the facilitators. Brook Avenue’s teachers are second to none. Thank you for all you do and for making Brook Avenue School a great place to learn.

The Bridges Academy, an independent day school serving students from Toddler through 8th Grade, has appointed Stephen Rubenacker to be new Head of School. Mr. Rubenacker has been an independent school educator for almost 20 years. He began his career in the Long Island Public School system before moving, in 2001, to the Friends Academy Middle School in Locust Valley, New York. In his tenure there, Stephen taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade Social Studies, coached various sports and served for 10 years as the Principal of the Middle School. During his time as division head, Stephen dramatically increased time spent on literacy and math instruction, implemented a one to one iPad initiative, worked with INDEX (the national bench marking group for independent schools) to implement the Mission Skills Assessment, revised disciplinary codes and worked with his administrative team on faculty evaluation, scheduling and professional development. He also collaborated with his admissions team to realize record levels of enrollment within his division and worked closely with the head of school, finance officer and board on budgeting and strategic planning. During his final years at Friends, Stephen was an instrumental part of the process of campus planning and renovation.

In 2015, Stephen assumed the headship of The Rosarian Academy, a 380-student independent Catholic day school in West Palm Beach Florida. His major accomplishments at The Rosarian Academy include numerous program initiatives in math, literacy and STEM education. Additionally, Stephen oversaw a complete rebranding initiative to improve dramatically the school’s independent school identity though marketing and web presence within the community. He also worked with his administrative team to improve philanthropic giving significantly within the institution, most recently recording a record level of fundraising through annual giving and yearly signature events. Stephen grew up on Long Island and attended North Shore High School. He holds a B.A. in History and

Secondary Education from St. John’s University and a Masters of Education from Dowling College, with a combined focus in Literacy and Special Education in grades K-12. In 2013, Stephen participated in the Aspiring Heads Institute through the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). He has spoken at various conferences through the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) on educational technology and has been a mentor teacher as part of the Institute for New Teachers, also a NYSAIS sponsored program. Last, and most important, Stephen is the proud husband of Kate and father of two boys, Thomas (8) and Daniel (7). They enjoy travel, outdoor activities, cub scouts, and spending quality time together on the weekends.

With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.

As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island feels they can never have enough people to volunteer. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They take volunteers to help with beach cleanups, planting oysters, collecting relevant data, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work.

Lastly, they help restore by partnering with the Town of Brookhaven to run a restoration Throughout the month of July, I will program where they grow oysters present various ways that you can and seed local harbors. They help those at Coastal Steward Long strive to establish a self-sustaining Island to preserve, educate and population of oysters in Long take action! Island’s harbors.

CSLI helps educate others through their marine education program, which brings students to visit the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Students will gain hands on experiences so they can understand the local marine ecology. They help preserve by leading cleanups in local communities to prevent marine debris from contaminating our beaches and injuring local wildlife through preservation efforts. Through working with businesses, community groups, schools and local government, they bring volunteers out for a day on the beach, where they gain

SENIORS RECEIVE RECOGNITION - Bay Shore High School recently held its annual Senior Awards Night. Community members and organizations attended to award scholarships to graduating seniors.

On Saturday, July 14th, CSLI will be having a Shellfish Restoration Project at Cedar Beach in Mt. Bay Shore High School Thespian Troupe 2963 recently held its annual induction and awards ceremony. The students who were inducted into the troupe have participated in the drama program in

various ways, whether by performing on stage, playing in the pit orchestra or as a member of the backstage crew. The troupe also handed out awards to recognize excellence in performance among its members.

This year’s ceremony was particularly special because it marked the 50th anniversary of the troupe. Former members and directors were on hand to celebrate. Congratulations to the inductees and award winners!

Miss NY Senior America Tickets are still available for the annual Ms. New York Senior America pageant to be held on July 29th at 2 p.m. at the Madison Theatre at Molly College in Rockville Centre. Pageant contestants

from across New York State will compete in evening gown, philosophy of life, judges Interview and talent categories. The Ms. Senior America Pageant is the first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor

to women who have reached the “Age of Elegance” (60 and over). It is the search for the gracious lady who best exemplifies dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans. The Ms. Senior America Pageant’s philosophy is

based upon the belief that seniors are the foundation of America, and our most valuable treasure. It is upon their knowledge, experience and resources that the younger generation has the opportunity to build a

better society. The current Ms. New York Senior America, Lee Ann Brill, will crown the winner for the coming year. The winner will receive a cash award of $1000, a trip to the national pageant in Atlantic City, a sash and a
