Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”
and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly
shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

Generous Grant Received On Wednesday, June 8th, community leaders joined with Kathleen Bennett, President of Pronto of Long Island, Inc., a notfor-profit, Community Outreach Center serving the most vulnerable children and families living in Brentwood, Bay Shore, Central Islip and neighboring communities, to announce their receipt of a grant by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) at Bella Verde in Brentwood. The grant will allow
Pronto, an affiliate of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), to update the computer infrastructure at Pronto. This upgrade will help Pronto to provide computer classes in English and Spanish for the community. The computer upgrade will also allow Pronto to provide Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) classes, citizenship classes and will provide software for resource and referral for Pronto’s
programs. The grant will also be used to install solar power at Pronto for energy efficiency. “We’re grateful for the receipt of this grant as it will help us tremendously in our efforts to help the people we serve,” said Kathleen Bennett, President of Pronto. “We will continue to explore any and all avenues to raise funds to help this grossly underserved community,” she continued.
