Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Director, Cancer Center for Kids, thanked everyone for their support and described the facility’s focus on superior medicine and the pursuit of new research opportunities. The event honored Donna-Marie Korth, a philanthropist and partner at Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP. On Thursday, June 18th, the Bay Shore Board of Education announced the appointment of Joseph C. Bond as Interim Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1st, 2015 through June 30th, 2016. Mr. Bond will fill the vacancy created by the departure of current Superintendent, Dr. Karen B. Salmon. Joseph Bond has helped guide Brentwood UFSD’s current strategic direction, raising graduation rates by 20 percent, guiding five schools from identified status to good standing, passing five consecutive budgets while maintaining the highest fiscal stability rating, and managing capital construction projects totaling $120 million. There is something really special about ladybugs. They’re cute, colorful and friendly, and so helpful in the garden. Scattered Summer Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $1,500 scholarships to three exemplary junior volunteers. The 2015 honorees Michelle Blum, Chloe Brett Hoetner and Davian Ramphal - plan to pursue careers that will utilize the skills they have developed while volunteering at Good Samaritan. Good Samaritan Vice President of Human Resources Mark Boehrer expressed his gratitude to this year’s recipients for their academic achievements and commitment to service. “As teenagers today, I appreciate how difficult it is to commit to any volunteer program. It says a lot and credit should be given to these exemplary students for their service to the hospital and community,” said Mr. Boehrer. Michelle Blum, a senior at St. John the Baptist High School, has contributed more than 135 hours to the hospital’s medical records department, linen room, B Unit, gift cart and at the concierge desk and plans to pursue a career in computer engineering as a college student at Manhattan College. “Working in so many areas of the hospital has taught me that all tasks are important and that there is constantly more work to be completed. The memories I have and the skills I developed will remain with me throughout my life,” said Ms. Blum. She resides

Scholarship funds are provided by the Central Council of the Guilds of Good Samaritan and through donations received at Good Samaritan’s Guild Thrift Shop, Gift Shop and Captree Café. The medical center has more than 200 active junior volunteers, who collectively contributed more than 3,800 hours in 2014. Between the ages of 15 and 18, they come from 25 different school districts in the vicinity of Good Samaritan Hospital. “Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek? I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay.

They have to clean this with me; after all, they live here too. They say that they will help me, and they swear to me it’s true. They’ll get to it eventually: “Calm down, Mom, you’ll see.” “We’ll get it all straightened out - neat as it can be.” I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!
