Planned Spontaneity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

Light Travels Unlike other light, which scatters, laser light travels in only one direction.

Piping Plover Season ideal habitat. Due to its declining population, the piping plover is listed as a threatened species and is therefore protected under the Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has developed recovery plans that describe actions required to help the plovers survive and the population to recover. The recovery plan requires the Suffolk County

Parks Department to locate nests, install fences and signs, and close all or portion of County beaches to protect the plovers. Seasonal employees are hired each year to track the mating pairs and to record nest activity. Ideally, once the eggs are laid, it will be approximately twentyeight days before they hatch, and another four weeks for the chicks to be fully fledged and able to fly.

Before fledging, they will run from the dunes to the shoreline and back, and due to their small size and color can easily be overlooked, thus requiring the surrounding area to be closed off to driving. This process can be prolonged when a nest fails (eggs don’t hatch, or nest is disturbed). When this occurs, plovers will often re-nest, and the process starts again.

While adhering to the federal guidelines to protect the plovers, the Parks Department also recognizes that Suffolk County outer beaches are also a favorite site for beachgoers, fishermen, surfers and campers, and works hard to limit closures and maintain access to the best of its ability. Park visitors can help to limit length of closures by avoiding

restricted areas, keeping pets leashed and following instruction from park staff and posted signs. As we head into the summer months, we are reminded of how essential it is that our community maintain steady participation in blood donation. Preparation for events such as these — having blood on hospital shelves in advance — is key to potentially save lives. “By spreading the word or even hosting your own blood drive, inviting

friends, family, and community organizations, you may save lives in your community,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Executive Director of NYBC. “We are in dire need of O negative blood with a reserve that is currently below a two day supply, and that is just too low.” Historically, during the summer months, blood centers have had to focus on building up the community’s blood product supply, as it

tends to diminish due to seasonal factors. While summer months are marked by a long vacation period, with schools in recess and leisure time, the need for blood never takes a vacation. NYBC urges individuals to seek out nearby blood donation centers and to engage in the selfless act of donating, helping to prevent a summer blood shortage and potentially saving the life of someone in need.

United Way of Long Island is giving companies, organizations, families and friends the chance to battle for bragging rights on The Peconic River this summer by entering a four-person team in the annual Paddle Battle Long Island Team Challenge. The Paddle Battle will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the town docks in Riverhead with proceeds from the Team Challenge going to United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild Program, as well the Long Island Aquarium. The Paddle Battle Team Challenge is a recreational Stand Up Paddle Board and Kayak race where groups will compete against each other for the coveted Paddle Battle Team Challenge trophy. The race will consist of teams of four competitors who will traverse the 2.5 mile race course designed for all skill levels. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the title of Top Team. Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim

The Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Swim will take place on July 22nd. The swim will begin at the Fire Island Lighthouse and finish at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters. The distance is approximately 5.5 miles, with each swimmer having up to four hours to complete the race. The Cross Bay Swim has been a tradition on Long Island since 1927, taking a 26-year hiatus from 19731999. Lifelong Bay Shore resident Rory Allen revived the race in 1999, recruiting lifeguards to participate in its return. Maggie Fischer, a 17 year-old senior at St. Anthony’s High School and a lifeguard at Saltaire, Fire Island, who had been

DeMarco announced today that the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative has been recognized with a 2016 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards are granted to counties for programs that serve to improve services to county residents, and are judged on their innovativeness, effectiveness, and for delivering results. The Sheriff’s Office received the award in the category of Criminal Justice and Public Safety. Special Flag Suffolk County Correction Officer Thomas Miller recently engaged in a special project with 6th and 7th grade students at the William Paca Middle School in the William Floyd School District. The initiative was a part of the Sheriff’s Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.RE.A.T.) Program, a curriculum the Sheriff’s Office conducts in schools throughout

Suffolk County. During his time teaching in the classroom, the students expressed an interest in giving back to their community, and decided to write letters of support for our United States military serving abroad. Officer Miller offered to coordinate the effort with one of his colleagues, Correction Officer Jose Moreno, who is currently serving in the Air Force

overseas and is on military leave from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. The students created drawings, cartoons, letters, cards and many other special items, and Officer Miller mailed the package to Officer Moreno, who then distributed it to his fellow Airmen, who were serving in Kuwait at the time. To commemorate the students’ heartfelt

best wishes, the Airmen commissioned an American Flag in the name of the students from the William Paca Middle School and the G.R.E.A.T. Program, and it was flown over their military base in Kuwait. Officer Moreno then mailed the flag to Officer Miller, who presented it along with another Correction Officer, Ricardo Flores, to the students during

the school’s Awards Night ceremony on June 13th, 2016. Officer Flores also serves in the Air Force. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco had nothing but praise for the students and the Officers who organized the effort. He stated, “The Officers involved in our G.R.E.A.T. program help build trust between law enforcement and the youth in our communities, and amazing

things can happen when we all work together for a common goal. I am very proud of the students at the William Paca Middle School for expressing their concern and patriotism for our military, of our staff deployed overseas, and for the special dedication shown by Officers Miller, Moreno and Flores.”
