Of Energy and Evolution “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are
genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as
who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Ensuring student safety is a top priority, not only in school but also while students travel to and from school. Suffolk Transportation Service (STS) was among a select group of pupil transportation operators in the U.S. chosen by the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to participate in a training program that encourages coordination between school bus operators and other agencies in emergency situations, such as a terrorism incident. Multiple Suffolk County school districts recently joined with local emergency responders, including Suffolk County Police, Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management, Bay Shore Fire Department, and New York State Bus Contractor’s Association, at STS’s Saxon Avenue Training Facility to participate in a unique TSA table top training exercise called EXIS (Exercise Information System). The TSA is an agency of the Federal Department of Homeland Security. “Our top priority as a school bus operator is student safety. Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. is pleased to be selected to spearhead this training program in Suffolk County, which helped all participants enhance their coordination with other agencies to keep students safe,” said John Corrado, President of STS, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. Participating school districts were: Port Jefferson, Bay Shore, Longwood, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Three Village, Central Islip, West Islip, Islip, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Comsewogue, and Eastern Suffolk BOCES. School districts attendees included security and transportation officials, as well as senior administrators, as either participants or observers. EXIS is a TSA training

VIRTUAL LEARNING - Bay Shore High School students utilize technology to enhance their learning. Recently, Mrs. Kaplar’s Marine Biology class used computers to do virtual fish dissections.
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. Who is responsible for a selfie gone wrong on a school trip to an art museum? Is Macy’s responsible for injuries caused by an out of control Dora balloon at its Thanksgiving Day parade? These cases and other negligence cases were tried by Bay Shore High School students in the high school’s annual Law Day mock trial competition held on April 26th. Eighteen teams of three students each performed their roles as lawyers and witness before attorneys from Bay Shore, Brightwaters and neighboring communities. The attorneys served as
judges for the competition and mentors as they gave the students advice on proper trial techniques, the rules of evidence and how to better frame their arguments to become more forceful advocates. Students Kya Primm, Christine De la Cruz and Jack Gartland earned first place honors. In a very close second place were Muqsiteen Aleema, Aimee Quinlan and Sofia Flores. The third place team consisted of Husbaan Sheikh, Gianna Greco and Peter Roy. In fourth place was the team of seniors Joseph Canale, Derek Brown and Sam Murdock. Judges for the
competition included local attorneys, Jack Finnerty, Esq., Timothy Finnerty, Esq., Ellen Kluepfel, Esq., Nick Santomartino, Esq., Thomas Telesca, Esq., Robert Torres, Esq., Leah Winfield, Esq. and law student Rachel Robinson. Law Day is organized by the high school social studies department as part of its law program by teacher and former practicing attorney Jeanne-Marie Marziliano with the assistance of Joseph Lemke, Director of Social Studies for the Bay Shore school district and John Selzer, Bay Shore High School mock trial coach.
BREAKFAST FOR CHAMPIONS - On May 2nd, Bay Shore High School held its final Breakfast for Champions of the 2017-2018 school year. Four times a year, scholars are recognized for outstanding performance and leadership. Thank you to speaker Salvatore Puccio for sharing his story and advice with the scholars. LIVING BIOGRAPHIES - The 4th grade students in Mrs. Morrison’s class at Gardiner Manor School presented a wax museum on important figures in history. As part of the wax museum project, students chose a historical figure, conducted research, and created posters about their chosen person. Finally, on wax museum day, students dressed up as wax depictions of their figures, who came to life with a push of a “button!” This project integrates social studies, reading, and language arts and is many students’ first exposure to public speaking.

Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply and train to become volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Training will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, starting Tuesday, September 11th. “We have nearly 100 trained volunteers,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the program. Rutter says that volunteers help the organization in many different ways. “Some speak in the community about their personal experiences, others help by doing fundraising, community outreach, office work, educational

STUDYING THE NEWS - Bay Shore High School’s journalism students know they can learn by studying the work of others. Recently, they looked at professional news outlets to learn more about how they cover different events and stories.
Citizens of the United States enjoy many basic rights and freedoms, including the freedom of speech, assembly, and religion, and the right to due process. These liberties are included in the Bill of Rights, or the first ten amendments of the U.S. Constitution. Along with these rights, however, come responsibilities. Obeying rules and laws, voting, and serving on juries are some responsibilities placed on U.S. citizens. It is important to note that
active citizenship is not limited to adults; younger citizens can help their communities become better places, too. On Friday, April 20th, the entire 7th grade at Bay Shore Middle School participated in a citizenship awareness day. Students from all 7th grade teams were asked to design a t-shirt that contained an inspirational quote and other motivational words or visuals. Then, both the teachers and students wore their shirts to school and
explained their messages to their peers during their social studies classes throughout the day. The students focused on a variety of citizenship topics, such as anti-bullying, recycling, volunteerism, healthy choices, and social/political awareness. Mr. Krieger, Mrs. Russello, Ms. Bonavita, Mr. Giuliano, Mrs. Squillacioti, Mrs. Cordina, and Ms. Santoro all sported their inspirational shirts and were beyond proud of their students’ efforts.

THE TEENY GOES TO - Bay Shore High School was the site of the 2018 Islip Town Arts Council Teeny Awards. Bay Shore senior Reece DeGraff took home the Teeny for Lead Actor in a Musical and the cast of Evita took home the award for Ensemble in a Musical in a tie with East Islip High School. This was the third straight year Bay Shore has won the ensemble award. Samuel Murdock and Dierdra Carmichael received scholarships.

DREAMING OF FLAGS - Students on Team 62 at Bay Shore Middle School Under the direction of Mr. participated in the Dream Flag Project by creating and designing their own Dream Narvaez and Mrs. Hidalgo, Poem. The project encourages writers to share their hopes and ambitions. with assitance from visiting artist Miguel Cossio, the
students rehearesed and performed Little Red Hen. This project was made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support
of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Huntington Arts Council and the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund.
MODELING DIPLOMACY - Bay Shore High School’s Model United Nations (UN) team recently hosted a conference that allowed several schools from across Long Island to practice their diplomacy skills.

BUCKET FILLERS - Brook Avenue School scholars who are kind and caring are WALKING AMONG HISTORY - Students from Bay Shore Middle School had the recognized as Bucket Fillers. They receive a certificate, bracelet and pencil. The chance to walk through history. During a trip to the Museum of Natural History they families of the most recently-recognized Bucket Fillers were proud of their scholars! were able to view a number of exhibits, including the dinosaur exhibit.
ANIMATION CREATION - Mr. La Ruina’s class at Gardiner Manor School had the opportunity to create animations of Shel Silverstein’s poetry using stop-motion animation. The students created storyboards to illustrate concepts and then used mixed media to create characters and sets. They used a camera to take hundreds of photos and then used a computer to create animated videos.
