Alive and Well I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through

Sign up by July 1st to host a Fresh Air child this August! “What it really equates to is another setting at your dinner table and giving a child a an experience they might not otherwise have. When our Fresh Air child Kenneth comes to visit all we have to do is have a welcoming home for a week or two,” says host father Chris. Each summer, close to 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town communities along the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine and Ontario, Canada. Fresh Air children are given the opportunity to experience a world outside of New York City full of meadows to run in, streams to fish in and lakes to swim in. Submit your application by July 1st to sign up to host a Fresh Air child this August. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Les Payne is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who spent most of his career as an editor and columnist at Newsday. He is also the founder of the National Association of Black Journalists. This year’s posthumous inductee is Marie Colvin, an Oyster Bay native who served as a war correspondent for The Sunday Times in London and died in the siege of Homs in Syria in 2012. In her honor, Stony Brook University established the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting. This year’s inductee to the PCLI Contributors Wing of the Hall of Fame is Vicky Katz Whittaker,
who served as president of the press club in 1979-1980 and was instrumental in creating many of its current programs and policies. The Robert W. Greene Public Service Award was awarded to Newsday for its multi-part series “LI’s Zombie Houses” about the glut of abandoned homes stuck in foreclosure. Briana Smith, a senior at Hofstra University, is the recipient of this year’s College Journalism
Scholarship. Katie Blasl, a reporter for RiverheadLOCAL, is the James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year. The Delphian, the student paper at Adelphi University, was selected as the Best Collegiate Newspaper. The Great Neck News, published by Blank Slate Media, was selected as the Best Community Weekly Newspaper. The award for Best High School Newspaper is being
shared by The Elmont Phoenix of Elmont High School and The Harbor View of Cold Spring Harbor High School. Tim Bolger, managing editor of Long Island Press, is this year’s Phil Spahn Memorial Award winner. The Spahn Award is presented to a PCLI member who has demonstrated leadership, ability and outstanding service to journalism, PCLI and the community.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga recently met with members of the Living Proof Church of God Venturing Crew 105. During the meeting, Legislator Barraga discussed his personal journey to becoming an elected official and the role and responsibilities of a
Suffolk County Legislator. Crew members were also interested in how, as a group, they could become more active in the Bay Shore Community. Venturing was officially created by the Boy Scouts of America on February 9th, 1998. It was originally part of the Exploring Division, specifically
geared toward older teens ranging in age from 14–19 years and has become the fastest growing program of the BSA . Venturing provides fun, positive experiences to help cultivate necessary skills that prepare young adults to mature and become responsible, caring adults.

At Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School (SSCM), there was much celebration among Girls’ Volleyball teams, as the Gold and Blue Squads enjoyed some end of season cheer. The Catholic Middle School Athletic Association’s (CMSAA) provides a structure for interscholastic athletic competition among middle schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, offering a variety of sports each season, ranging from Baseball, Softball, Basketball and Soccer to Volleyball, Lacrosse, Bowling, and Cross Country Track. This year’s enthusiastic group of young Volleyball players was headed up by parent volunteers, Tyrone Peterson and Hilary
Troy, who led two SSCM teams, the more veteran Gold Squad of mainly 8th graders with a handful of 7th graders and the newly formed Blue Squad, consisting of energetic 6th and 7th graders. The Blue Squad held their own nicely, placing 5th in the Angels Division. Meanwhile, the Gold Squad came crashing out of the gate from the very first matchup, sweeping the first three games against St. Patrick’s and keeping that momentum going throughout the season, for a final ranking of 2nd place in the Diocese. Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over six years and this year’s Volleyball Team includes 16 girls from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, whose
practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island locations. At the heart of the CMSAA’s Mission Statement is their role in helping develop well-rounded athletes, so the program’s volunteer coaches seek to promote physical endurance and good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players. EXCLUSIVE RANK - Killian Quinn, a junior at Bay Shore HS, was awarded the exclusive rank of Eagle Scout on July 25th. Killian is a member of Troop 43 out of St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Bay Shore. His Court of Honor ceremony was held on Saturday, April 2nd, at St. Peter’s Church. His Eagle Project was to remove and replace the fence in the front of St. Peter’s Church. In addition, he is a member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society. Upon finishing high school, Killian plans to further his education by applying to SUNY Maritime College and studying Marine Transportation.

Stay Suffolk is designed to enhance the region’s $5.3 billion tourism industry by encouraging residents to take advantage of the world-class amenities Suffolk County has to offer and explore the various attractions that draw more than 9.1
million to the County each year. “It is easy to take living in our region for granted. When most people think of vacation spots, they do not often think of their own backyards,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “However, Suffolk County is home to wonderful destinations, such as world-class beaches, wine country, pristine golf courses, our vibrant downtowns and much more. By exploring all the activities our region has to offer, you can have a perfect vacation without the expense of long-distance travel, and most importantly, support our local tourism industry that generates nearly $2.9
