As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of

decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

Choir Spreads Joy

The Gardiner Manor School Fifth Grade Choir traveled by bus to sing at two different Senior Centers in the Town of Islip. Several dozen senior citizens turned out to attend the performances. The first stop was the

Caesar Trunzo Senior Center in Brentwood, followed shortly by a visit to the West Islip Senior Citizen Center. Led and accompanied by Mr. Kant, the youngsters previewed songs from their upcoming Spring Concert, including

the Swedish-language “Vem Kan Segla” and the intricately choreographed “Steppin’ Out With My Baby.” Afterwards the students chatted with their fellow town residents, who were delighted by the singing.

On Saturday, June 2nd, Scouts from BSA Troop 43 and Cub Pack 153 both chartered by St. Peters by the Sea in Bay Shore along with scouts from Pack 1439 in Ronkonkoma and Troop 566 in Lake Grove returned to Calverton

National Cemetery to assist with collecting, sorting and storing the American Flags that they used to decorate the graves. The Scouts, along with their leaders and families, collected and cared for just over 3,380 flags and

graves in their section of the cemetery. Scouts, thank you for your service, St. Peters by the Sea and the community thank you for your continued support.

Recently, students took a walk in nature before writing enhance student outcomes. Recently, social studies teachers from each elementary haikus about spring. building worked as a team to put together inquiry unit plans.

CELEBRATING CULTURE - Recently, the Bay Shore Dual Language Parent Faculty Association (PFA) hosted many Dual Language families from Brook Avenue School and Gardiner Manor School for a beautiful feast filled with many favorite traditional foods. The dance troope “El Teatro Rodante Hispanico” performed several traditional Spanish dances for the families.

SAFETY LESSON - Bay Shore High School’s driver education program teaches students to be safe drivers. Recently, the program partnered with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department to provide a lesson about impaired driving. Bay Shore Schools Superintendent Joseph Bond joined with the students in attempting to complete a maze while wearing vision-impairing goggles.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know

MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project.
